Product Description:

This lovely book shares the story of the poor physician named Valentine who lived in ancient Rome and helped the sick of that city without thought of gain for himself. Valentine was a Christian at a time when persecution was high, but he nonetheless would pray to God to heal each of his patients. Eventually martyred for his faith, it is said that Valentine sent a short note to a young blind girl from his prison cell before his execution and her sight was restored. This book shares this legendary story in a simple and straightforward way. The unique thing about this book is the colorful mosaics that illustrate the story beautifully. Retold and illustrated by Robert Sabuda, 32 pgs, pb. ~Rachel

On Valentine's Day I read this book to my children ages six five and three They liked it so much that my son brought it to me to read again the next day! It coincided perfectly with our history text as we were just reading about the Roman gods The book mentions the many Roman gods and the one God that the Christians pray to Valentine's life and death opened up an opportunity to talk about generosity loyalty to God and martyrdom That's quite a different image than all the pink hearts and chocolate give of Valentine's Day! I like it! The end of the story naturally led to helping my children write simple sweet notes to loved ones just as Saint Valentine did before he was executed This is a great book for us to build our family Valentine's Day tradition around I plan to put it away and then pull it out again next year Maybe then we will even try to incorporate the yellow crocus as we learned that it is the traditional Valentine flower If you want to teach some holiday history or want to take the focus off of candy hearts or romance or maybe just want to explain to your kids why people give little Valentine cards on February 14 I recommend this book!
