Publisher Description:

This 80-page book teaches students how to diagram sentences so they see the underlying structure of English grammar. Diagramming sentences gives many visual and logical learners an alternative way to learn grammar. Students who understand the finer points of English grammar will apply this knowledge to their writing. For many students, boring old grammar lessons become understandable and funeven kids who are traditionally more "math minded" begin to enjoy English lessons.

Each lesson provides plenty of practice diagramming. After completing all the lessons, there is a review where students diagram sentences using all the grammar rules they have learned.

The grammar lessons inSentence Diagramming: Level 1are:

  • Compound Predicates With Direct Objects
  • Imperative Sentence (Commands)
  • Interrogative Sentences (Questions)
  • Indirect Object
  • Adverbial Nouns
  • Interjections and Direct Address
  • Intensifiers and Adverbs Modifying Adjectives, Adverbs, and Adverbial Nouns
  • Linking Verbs and Predicate Adjectives
  • Appositives
  • Correlative Conjunctions
  • Prepositional Phrases
  • Compound Sentences

Students learn critical thinking, organizational skills, and much more with sentence diagramming. A student in third through twelfth grade can start diagramming with this. A Critical Thinking Press series, Sentence Diagramming begins with simple subject-verb sentences but progresses to complex sentences. Each lesson explains the grammar and demonstrates diagramming. First, students must correct incorrect diagramming. Then students diagram sentences using the lines provided, making it an easy process to learn. Finally, the student is given a sentence and they must provide the diagramming and the lines. Review and answers are provided at the end.

The Beginning level covers simple subject and verbs; direct object; adjectives; adverbs; predicate adjectives; predicate nouns; prepositional phrases; compound subjects; predicates; direct objects; and predicate adjectives and nouns. Category Description for Diagramming Sentences:

Learning how to diagram sentences can really help students visualize how the different parts of speech work together to form sentences. However, this skill isn't always included in English books. This workbook provides a wonderful supplement to any curriculum. It covers sentence diagramming from easy to challenging, one step at a time. After reading simple explanations and seeing examples, students practice with similar sentences. The worksheets start with just subjects and predicates and then progress to adjectives, adverbs, direct and indirect objects, appositives, interjections, prepositional phrases, participles, and gerunds. Reviews are scattered throughout, which can be used as quizzes or test if desired. The worksheets are perforated and reproducible. Answers included, 46 pages. - Melissa

My daughter needs extra work in sentence structure. This book seemed really clear, clean, focused on a narrow range of skills. Plus, I really like the Critical Thinking Company.

This takes my student through the hard and sometimes confusing world of diagramming. Each lesson is spent on one kind of diagram, and explains it well. For a refresher, we started with the Beginning book-same company, and now we are ready for this second book.

The lessons appear to be broken down into usable chunks so I can just start teaching from the beginning without much scaffolding.
