Publisher Description:

The First Form Latin Instructional DVDs (3 discs, 9 hours, 15-20 minutes/lesson) features superb explanations by Highlands Latin School teacher Jessica Watson. Her First Form Latin Instructional DVDs include helpful on-screen notes, illustrations, diagrams, recitations, and more!

Written by Cheryl Lowe (author of the best-selling Latina Christiana), First Form and its sister Latin products have been used by more than 100,000 students across the world to learn Latin! First Form's grammar-first approach focuses on grammar forms and vocabulary because these are the skills suitable for the grammar stage student. All beginners regardless of ageare in the grammar stage of learning. Syntax (how to use the grammar) and translation are logic and rhetoric stage skills, respectively, and quickly overwhelm the student unless introduced at a slow, gentle pace and taught for mastery.First Form is the ideal text for all beginners, grades 5 & up, or is a great follow-up to Latina Christiana at any age. Now every school and homeschool can have a truly successful Latin program that creates Latin scholars instead of Latin drop-outs.

Based on twenty years of teaching experience, this revolutionary "grammar-first" series will be your guide as you and your students successfully climb the mountain of Latin Grammar all the way to the top! The uniqueness of the First Form Series lies in two features: (1) Commitment to the trivium model of teaching grammar systematically in order to facilitate retention and understanding, rather than topically, to facilitate translation; and (2) Extensive workbook exercises to ensure skills mastery and rapid recognition of inflected forms.

After finishing First Form ,the student will have mastered:

  • The six indicative active tenses of the first two verb conjugations
  • Five noun declensions
  • First and second declension adjectives
  • 185 vocabulary words
Category Description for First Form Latin:

Five units; 34 lessons. Covers verbs (present, perfect; 1st & 2nd conjugation) and nouns (1st - 5th declension).

Category Description for First Form Latin Series (Gr. 5-AD):

Mastery is the key to success in Latin and this program is designed to produce mastery. The First Form program is a four-text series (First, Second, Third, & Fourth Forms) from Memoria Press that teaches Latin grammar completely and thoroughly and moves the student firmly into translation and reading. Each student text provides concise, two-page lessons with a specific format: a Latin saying, a set of grammar forms, vocabulary, a grammar lesson, and some elementary syntax. The corresponding student workbook has 4-6 pages of exercises and well-designed drills per lesson that guide the student and teacher through the lesson. 4th to 6th graders can expect to spend about 3 hours per week for an academic year; grades 7th and up can cover a volume in one semester or less.

Other components of the program include a teacher manual, teacher key (answers for Workbook, Quizzes, Tests) quizzes & tests book, workbook key, flashcards, grammar charts, a pronunciation CD and instructional DVDs. In some levels, the Pronunciation CD and the Instructional DVDs are also available as a lifetime streaming option. Once an order for these streaming items is processed, you receive an email with access information.

The Teacher Manual is "where the action is", so to speak. It features a lesson overview, a wrap-around text that includes a scripted lesson and grammar "chalk-talk" (again, scripted in question- and-answer format utilizing a white board). In addition to explaining the integration of workbook, drills, quizzes, and recitation, there are suggestions for incorporating the Lingua Angelica program. Games and review activities complete the offering. Teacher prep is also spelled out very well: read and reread the teaching guidelines for each lesson, read and reread the student text and teacher manual, do all workbook exercises (yes, the teacher will need her own workbook). While this may seem like a lot to remember, the assumption is that the teacher does not know Latin herself and is therefore learning along with the student, staying one complete lesson ahead in terms of prep. Appendices to the teacher's manual include Latin conversations, prayers and sayings with translations, and a grammar reference.

The Text Set includes the student text, workbook, test & quizzes, pronunciation CD, and teacher manual, workbook & quiz/test answer key. The Complete Set includes all the items of the Text Set, plus the flashcards and the DVDs. These Instructional DVDs are taught by Glen Moore or Jessica Watson of Highlands Latin School, utilizing humor and a variety of visual techniques. There are Streaming Options for the pronunciation CDs and instructional DVDs and in some sets the streaming option is replacing the hardcopy.

The Grammar Wall Charts, where available (First & Second Form), are not included in any set. They are 17”x 33” (folded), heavy paper, color charts providing visuals for the grammar taught in the course. (Be prepared to "donate" a significant amount of wall space to these charts.) If you don't have or don't want to donate the wall space, consider using the Desk Charts, which are down-sized versions of the Wall Charts. First Form and Second Form are packaged together. Third and Fourth Form charts are only available as Desk Charts and are packaged together.

The Student Text includes historical notes and photos of current scenes and artifacts. The Lesson Plans provide week-by-week daily checklists of the text and workbook lessons, assignments, review, drills, quizzes, and tests. Incorporating Famous Men of Rome (also published by Memoria) is optional, but will add an additional historical element into the study.

The First Form Latin Review and Second Form Latin Review (student books and answer keys) provide a summer course to review what was learned during each course. ~ Janice

I have not studied Latin and my oldest is quickly moving beyond my depth. I needed something that would provide her the instruction that I cannot.

Is this the first edition (Glen Moore) as pictured or the second edition (Jessica Watson) as stated in the description?

BEST ANSWER: We currently have the second edition and an outdated graphic. I'm sorry.
Do the DVDs in First Form Latin provide additional information beyond what is in the teacher's manual?
A shopper on Mar 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, indeed-- in the DVD's, the lesson is presented by a Latin instructor. He is quite good, and my kids enjoy his sense of humor. I continued using First Form Latin over other curricula because the dvd instruction makes it much easier as a parent! The teacher's manual has further written explanation and answer key.

Speed a little too fast
We purchased this DVD along with the entire First Form Latin set. Overall, we are VERY pleased with the curriculum.

The DVD itself, however, has been less helpful than I had anticipated. While the teacher has a friendly, pleasant tone and shares great information, the rapid speed at which she talks has been distracting to my student (and to me). One example of this occurs after introducing new vocabulary to students. The teacher says a Latin word and asks the students to repeat after her. She doesn't always pause for very long in between each word or pronounce the word at a pace at which students can easily distinguish between each syllable in the Latin word. Considering that many students are learning Latin for the first time (and that many parents buying the DVD may be doing so for an auditory learner), being able to hear the words spoken slowly and clearly would be beneficial. There are so many instances where students are expected to repeat after the teacher that, unfortunately, simply pausing the DVD each time may not be practical.

Certainly, there are many positives to having a DVD lesson available, and the content itself is excellent. Unfortunately, our family has not found the DVD as useful as it might have been because of the speed.

This is NOT the first edition!
We received the second edition with Jessica Watson. Important note - she uses the ecclesiastical pronunciations, and not the classical pronunciations which are more commonly accepted in academia. She also does not leave enough time for students to interact or respond to her questions or prompts. We will be returning, due to the ecclesiastical pronunciation, and due to not receiving the item we ordered (first edition)
