Category Description for Language Lessons Series by Sandi Queen:

Pick-up-and-go language arts - Charlotte Mason style. Copywork, dictation, and narration from interesting, vintage works including poetry, speeches, and stories. Full-color art reproductions typically depicting a long ago, slower, more rural lifestyle. A full spectrum of language arts skills starting with phonics and handwriting and progressing through creative writing. A gentle but thorough introduction to grammar and mechanics with periodic review. An emphasis on creative expression and poetry appreciation. What's not to like? This is a far cry from repetitive, dry grammar books and their accompanying boredom.

There are 180 teacher-student interactive lessons in each book. Lesson times are very short (5-10 minutes) in the early books and progress to about 30-45 minutes in the upper level books. The beginning books are scripted while later books progress into a warm, instructive, conversational narrative. These perfect-bound books are designed to become a consumable student portfolio. Often - particularly in the early grades - students are asked to draw pictures on left-side facing pages all of which are left purposely blank. Except for the high school book, copywork/dictation space is provided. Grammar exercises requiring editing or some sort of marking (i.e. circle subject; underline predicate) always have adequate space for completion. There is no prep for the teacher although interaction and discussion with the student and oversight of their work is necessary. Answer keys provide time-saving answers for the objective portions but may not be needed for the younger levels.

Grammar coverage is comprehensive and thorough although practice is minimal. Continual review is provided for all grammar concepts once introduced and skills are carefully sequenced through the years to encourage concept understanding. Descriptive, narrative and creative writing are all covered in varying and increasing (through the levels) degrees. However, paragraph construction skills are minimal and essay construction is found only in High School Volume 2. ~ Janice

Language arts programs listed in this section cover most areas of language arts (reading/literature, writing, grammar, spelling and handwriting) in one curriculum, although some skill areas may be covered with less intensity than a focused, stand-alone course.

I think this is a perfect fit for my science/math-oriented student, who still needs at least a basic level of English coursework.

We've been using this for the past decade. Our children have developed a very strong grammar foundation with very simple and concise lessons.

We've used these books for 20 years. I love the Charlotte Mason methodology and appreciate my kids can do these lessons mostly independently.

My twin sons who were in public school were struggling with writing. They just completed the Language Lessons for the Elementary Child. In a year and half they went from writing simple sentences to being able to write a three paragraph essay with only a little support. They are now familiar with parts of speech and writing more complex sentences. This is a great program for the struggling learner.

We have done LL through Queen since we started and love the short, clearly-presented lessons, the review, and everything about it.

Self guiding, smaller lessons, not overwhelming, lets my child use his imagination for specific lessons. Also, the copy work has been wonderful and helped improve his handwriting.

I like Sandi Queens approach to language.

We have used Sandi Queen's Language Lessons for years now. My children prefer these books over any others for Language Arts. They are simple and not time-consuming, yet they cover everything you need to learn, as long as you follow her directions!

these are neat language arts with a variety of things & yet saves me the work of the traditional Charlotte Mason approach of finding my own assignments

I have used this series with my older children, and I find the books to be a gentle, parent-child interactive way to learn grammar basics, practice copywork, appreciate art, and study poetry all in one book!

These books are very concise and they are very thorough for the small amount of work the student is asked to complete.

I plan to use volume one and two at an accelerated rate doing two lessons a day since the lessons are quite brief and very gentle for this level. We are going through an intensive grammar program this year and next year school year when we use this volume and volume one for 7th grade, it will be a nice change of pace. The samples I have view on Queen's web site show a variety of fun quick lessons that will be a nice change from boring 'ol grammar! I also plan on using G.U.M. Drops as well.

This is a Charlotte Mason style workbook She doesn't push English grammar study till 7th grade so the book is pretty easy It introduces the student to parts of grammar and punctuation so he has a useful-but not deep- understanding of it It gets him going on narration with beautiful pictures There is good writing practice and the child learns good writing by copying excellent writing It improves the handwriting too Sometimes I let my kids substitute a comparable length poem if they do not like the one chosen for copyingAlthough the pages are blank on the back they are often filled with the student's writing as he goes through the lessons We don't use all the Language Lesson books We start after a good phonics foundation Then we just use every other one because they are easy but cover quite a few subjects and there is review between books So we use the Secondary book in 4th or 5th gradeIn 6th-7th grade we go through Rod and Staff's 5th grade English book which is very thorough They are ready for it with much less pain than going through other programs which we have tried bits of My kids like English when they hit 7th grade

I was excited about this program however when it arrived I was thoroughly disappointed We used First Language Lessons 1-4 by Jessie Wise with our older child If we would have placed him in either volumes of Language Lessons for the Secondary Child it would have been below his level There's very little in these workbooks They are only 85 pages single-sided and big font The artwork was another disappointment They are pixalated and not worthy of picture study
