Product Description:

Phonics and reading (as well as spelling, writing and vocabulary) two components designed to be used together, one reinforcing the other. This is a traditional, biblical, teacher-directed program with carefully laid out lessons. It covers all of language arts for kindergarten, including phonics and handwriting. The coursework is fairly serious and rigorous, but the student pages look inviting. Letters and their sounds are introduced in an order that allows students to begin reading and writing words almost immediately. As sounds are learned, they are practiced and reinforced by reading, writing, spelling, and handwriting.

Complete teacher materials include Teacher Handbooks, lesson plans, and phonics songs (contained on a USB flash drive). Lesson plans are very detailed and include step-by step instructions for teaching the lesson plus a content overview, list of materials you'll need, teaching tips, and activities. Handbooks are in PDF format and can be read and/or printed. Songs can be uploaded to a personal device. A brief, spiral-bound Phonics and Reading Guide is also included. Student Materials are printed in full-color. There are four Worktexts (two for each component, 160 to 230 pgs) and six paperback Readers (96 - 170 pgs). A small koala bear plush animal is also included in the drawstring bag.

Publisher Description:

We do not believe you can find any program that is better and teaches children more effectively than the American Language Series. Most children are reading at a second or third grade level when they are finished. Not only are they terrific readers, but they are very good spellers. Children are reading words within a few days of starting. Each reader covers different vowel combinations. The first reader only has short-vowel words. The third reader has words that are long vowel only if they end in “e”. Seeing the same words in their workbooks and then reading them in their readers, helps them to remember them so much better. This is why they end up spelling so well.

Reading is the most important thing a child will learn academically. If they can read, they can learn anything from anyone. Even math is dependent on a child being able to read the instructions. We believe this is the very best program available at a very reasonable price.

Complete set includes:

  • 4 Workbooks
  • 6 Readers
  • Teacher's CD
  • Teacher's Guide

Category Description for American Language Series:

Many homeschoolers will recognize this program from Mile-Hi by Guyla Nelson. It has two basic components: Phonics & Reading and Spelling, Writing, & Vocabulary. These are designed to be used together, one reinforcing the other. This is a traditional, biblical, teacher-directed program with carefully laid out lessons. It covers all of language arts for kindergarten, including handwriting. Complete teacher materials, including Teacher Handbooks, lesson plans, and phonics songs are contained on a USB flash drive. Handbooks are in .pdf format and can be read and/or printed using Adobe Acrobat. The manuals are quite meaty at 268 pgs. (Spelling, Writing & Vocabulary), 420 pgs. (Phonics & Reading), and 510 pgs. (Phonics & Spelling). Song format is compatible with itunes or Quicktime. Software for playing these is available via free download from Adobe or Apple. Unless you can be at your computer while teaching, you will probably want to print out the lessons and download music to your mp3 music player. An abbreviated Phonics and Reading Guide (very abbreviated) is included also, but this is not enough to teach from. All of the student materials, however, are printed and in full-color. There are four worktexts - two for each component - and six paperback readers. Student materials are hefty as well; workbooks vary between 160 and 230 pages apiece; readers are thick with the first a mere 96 pages and the rest over 170 pages each. This is among the most comprehensive programs available both in terms of content and material.

Lesson plans are very detailed, telling you exactly what to do. They include a content overview, list of materials you'll need, teaching tips, and activities (step by step instructions for teaching the lesson). This will be a tremendous help to busy mothers or those without experience teaching reading. The coursework is fairly serious and rigorous, but student pages look inviting. Letters and their sounds are introduced in an order that allows students to begin reading and writing words almost immediately. By the second lesson, they are writing 'loll' and identifying words that begin with lo (short o) like 'lock' and 'lobster'. The rest of the letters are introduced in this order: i, d, a. c, t, e, f, u, v, w, s, h, n, r, m, b, j, x, g, y, p, q, k, z. Following this, consonant digraphs and blends are introduced, then consonant substitutes (silent letters), silent e, controlled-vowels, vowel digraphs and vowel digraph exceptions, diphthongs and diphthong exceptions. As sounds are learned, they are practiced and reinforced by reading, writing, spelling and handwriting. This program is very thorough and will give your child a solid foundation in language. Components are also available separately.

This is a great program for Kindergarteners who already know how to read simple CVC words. It's a bit more advanced and quick paced than a typical kinder program, but they come out reading really well by the end!

Well, I worked in a Christian School, and the kindergarten teacher recommended these books for my grandson. She rated these books with high marks, and I trusted her words.

I wanted to get this to use in conjunction with another program for one of the my children who has language issues and needs some extra reinforcement. I would also like to use this to start working with a Kindergartener and a very precocious three year old.

This is one of the strongest language series available. We have been very happy with it in the past.

We have had outstanding results with our kindergarten students when using this curriculum. The backpack and stuffed animal is a nice gift to our students at the start of kindergarten.

I taught using this curriculum. The Kindergarteners were reading in 1 month!!! It is a good, Christian curriculum. Now I am looking forward to teaching my children to read.

Is this quite bible heavy? I would prefer a phonics program that is very bible based.
Ashley on Mar 8, 2020
BEST ANSWER: This is an incredible program that will help your child to be able to read the Bible before finishing Kindergarten! There are some Bible stories throughout the curriculum. We have an excellent Bible curriculum we use along with the American Language Series. Yet, we HIGHLY recommend this Kindergarten curriculum. It is excellent!
Does this include the teachers’s manuals?
Dianna H on Jun 13, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it does. Complete teacher materials, including Teacher Handbooks, lesson plans, and phonics songs are contained on a CD-ROM.
I am looking to purchase this curriculum for my 5 year old son. He is biracial and I am specifically looking for curriculum that has diverse pictures of people included. Is this curriculum diverse in their depiction of people?
A shopper on May 9, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It is more diverse and inclusive than others I have used. It uses more stories with children as characters than any other curriculum.

Most fantastic, underrated reading/writing program!!!
When I started homeschooling in 2015, this curriculum was recommended by a private school teacher who had been using it to teach K since the 90's. (It used to be called Little Patriots). She couldn't recommend it highly enough so I took her at her word. THIS IS FANTASTIC!! With my oldest, we got about 3/4 through the curriculum and he was well- beyond a Kindergarten reading level when it was done. So for my next 2 kiddos, we stretched it out to 2 years and used it for 1st grade as well. I'm getting ready to use it to teach my last baby how to read and I'm so sad this is the last time we will use ALS. I don't know why this curriculum is so under-used. I'm the only person I know who's ever used it (other than the moms to whom I recommended it). It's a fantastic, logical, and sweet way to teach your child to read and write. My advice is to go at your child's pace. Don't push it if it seems too much. You can go as slowly as you need to (seriously even stretch it out 2 years) and trust that they will emerge with a rock-solid foundation for reading and writing!

Excellent!
My daughter is 8 years old and we are starting at the beginning and able to get through all of these lessons, cementing skills for learning to read. Spelling is also being reinforced. If she was 5 this would be too hard as reading has not come easily to her but at age 8 this is getting us through all basic skills, rules and practices needed to help her become a proficient reader. She is confident and happy to do her lessons. Love this program! I do wish that I had a teacher book already printed as the downloads are lengthy & repetitive so I haven't printed them yet. I would've paid more to just have a teacher book already printed and provided to me.

This is the program my son used way back in 2000 when we first started homeschooling---it's incredibly thorough and really creates skilled readers I was told by a rep at whatever curriculum catalog I purchased this from that my son would be reading at the level of last year of 2nd grade and boy was she right! I remember it being very teacher intensive but very enjoyable for both my son and myself I see there is now a CDROM for teacher but my program had very ed lessons contained in 2 teacher manuals I had no idea this program was still around but I highly recommend it for anyone wishing to have a very strong reader

My first impression of this program is that it is unbelievably comprehensive I've never taught a child to read before and there is a lot more to it than I expected - all of it covered here The children's materials are attractive with nice stories in the readers The guidelines for the handwriting exercises are much smaller than we're used to - I'll have to see if my daughter can print such small lettersMy only gripe is with the teacher's materials The pdf files were apparently scanned in from a printout rather than converted from the original document which means that the text is not sharp and easy to read but is quite blurry and swims on the page The font is small so reading more than a little at a time hurts my eyes I plan to call the publisher and see if they can provide me with pdf files directly converted from the word processing documents Those would be much easier to read And there is *a lot* to read Be prepared to print 1000 pages! All in all though I feel well-prepared to teach reading with this program which a veteran homeschool friend recommended
