Marbling Set (Japanese Suminagashi)

Marbling is an awesome open-ended craft that is fascinating for kids. It's quick, easy, and the results are so dramatic and pretty that kids will want to do it over and over again. Just fill a large pan with water, drip a few drops of ink onto the surface, swirl with a utensil, and you're ready to go. Simply lay paper (or light fabric like silk) onto the surface of the water and the material will become imprinted with gorgeous marbled designs. A brief rinsing in clean water is all that's necessary to "set" the design, and then you can then use your paper for gift wrap, stationery, collage, or just for fun! This small set gave us the best results when we compared it with others and (bonus!) it was the least messy too. The set includes six marbling inks and a sheet of perforated circles or "float paper." The paper is included because the inks are heavier than the water, and if dripped directly into the water, the ink will sink to the bottom instead of spreading out on the surface. When you run out of float paper, you can substitute your own made out of medium-weight paper (we tried light cardstock, and it worked just as well). The ink is bright and strong, so you won't need more than a drop or two per batch. You should get many years of marbling sessions out of this set!
