Focusing specifically on the structure and content of essay writing, it's an extension and refinement of IEW's Unit VIII (on the formal essay). Utilizing a four-step teaching strategy which includes preliminary instruction, modeling,practice with help, and "on your own" work, this ten-week course by Lesha Myers takes the student step-by-step through the essay-writing process.Teaching units include thesis statements, essay organization, transitions,introductions, and conclusions and end with descriptive and persuasive essay practice. The course book includes student pages with instruction written directly to the student and teacher pages that include helps (grading and schedules) and unit by unit lesson plans.

Our evaluator recommended this series. As my children have learned to write reports and such, they've needed more guidance with their opening and closing paragraphs. The Elegant Essay teachings should strengthen those skills.

BEST ANSWER: For a complete composition course, I would add the Fix-it Grammar curriculum. Both The Elegant Essay and Writing Research Papers are writing curriculum only. To create a composition course you need to add grammar and/or a literature component, because the students are conducting research and reading journal articles teachers opt to add the grammar component. Another benefit of completing only one book is the ability to adjust the speed of the curriculum. Students may need more time for research, construction of the essay, or proof reading.
Does this course cover paragraph writing as well as essay writing?

BEST ANSWER: No not really. It gives several components and tips on what makes a good paragraph, but all the information is build around an essay. The thesis, intro, body, and conclusion.
Which course is better for high schoolers: this one (The Elegant Essay) or IEW's High School Essay Intensive? I realize that the High School Essay Intensive is the more pricey option, but I wondered if the Elegant Essay prepares students just as well for future assignments/college?

BEST ANSWER: These two courses are not covering the same aspects of essay-writing. Elegant Essay is looking at all sorts of essay writing techniques and refinements as well as the different forms of essays - expository, descriptive, narrative, and persuasive. On the other hand, Essay Intensive is focused entirely on two very specific essay applications - timed essays (like on tests and ACT/SAT) and on personal essays (for college applications). Typically, students would complete Elegant Essay before Essay Intensive.
Hi! are there any prerequisites for this course? Is it necessary for the student to have completed IEW's other courses before he/she can move on to this one, or is The Elegant Essay a stand alone course?

BEST ANSWER: My daughter(17) did it as a stand alone course. I wasn't sure how it would work. She has not done any other IEW courses. She was able to do it independently and without any outside helps. She really enjoyed it, but she is very through and does well on learning independently.
Is this a high school credit course for one semester?

BEST ANSWER: This course provides the writing/composition component of a high school English/Language Arts credit. You would also need a literature component.

Great Essay Writing Program for High School
This curriculum is pretty easy to use. It breaks down how to write an essay in very easy steps and is good for a student who does not have much experience with writing essays. Most of the instructions are for classrooms so I have had to modify it some for my one 10th grader.

Disorganized and not engaging
I tried really hard to like the "Elegant Essay" book, but I have never had books that I hated so much! This was purchased to use for my high school student as part of our English curriculum. Even though I am a writer and have always enjoyed English, I thought I'd try this set as a new approach to helping my student with essay writing. First of all, the information is SO discombobulated! It's all split between the student book and the teacher manual and it requires a LOT of prepping beforehand just to figure out what to teach from which book. Some of the material is presented like the author is the teacher and some of it is obviously supposed to be the parent/teacher presenting, and it's all just a mess that I found extremely frustrating. My student found the author to be "out-of-touch" and couldn't relate to most of the examples and prompts. So the whole thing was frustrating for both of us. Maybe this series makes sense as part of a larger curriculum, but it definitely didn't work well for us. A teacher who isn't strong in their own writing skills would certainly have a hard time using this book to teach.
