Trip down memory lane-- my sister and I used to play with these together with my elderly next door neighbor, who had been a librarian. Turned out this little deck really created an interest in me for classic literature.

I brought this for my high school English class to play when we had some extra time and to expose them to the authors and their books. Wow! This game has been a hit! The students ask to borrow the deck all the time and play it every chance they can in their other classes.

My husband played this game as a child, our two sons (now 38 and 35) played as a child, so I figure it's time to get a set for the grandchildren. I thought they would be too boring for kids, but not so. In fact, I think they fostered our sons' love of literature.

What authors are included?
A shopper on May 19, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Authors is a classic card game dating back to 1861. The Authors deck contains 52 cards featuring color portraits of 13 honored writers, with lists of their four greatest literary works. Still played today as it was originally, the Authors Card Game is played with these 13 books of 4 cards each. The object is to collect complete books by calling for cards from other players. The authors featured include: Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, William Thackeray, Robert Louis Stevenson, James Fenimore Cooper, Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Longfellow, Sir Walter Scott, Alfred Tennyson, Louise May Alcott, and Edgar Allan Poe. The cards also have standard indices in both upper and lower corners. So the Authors deck can also be used for many traditional card games. Enter an answer to this question.

BEST ANSWER: This is a standard deck of 54 playing cards with basic suits and two jokers. While the suits are still shown in the corners, the middle of each card displays a full-color illustration of a famous author. The name of the author is written beneath the illustration and a few of the books written by that author are listed. Basically, you can play any sort of card game (i.e. rummy, go fish, etc) with these cards and you'll become familiar with the authors through seeing them as you play.

Wish they weren’t playing cards also!
We like the game cards. But we wish they were only the authors game and not playing cards. Having the extra numbers and each set be a different number makes it easier to tell at a glance what another player has in his hand. For instance, if I glanced at another players hand and saw the number 2, which is easy to see, I would immediately know which author they had and could ask for it.

Love this game!
My mom had played this card game in her childhood and made it a family favorite for my brother and me growing up. Not only is it fun for a very competitive family, but we almost magically learned which authors wrote which famous books and were ahead of some of our classmates just by playing this fun game.

Bought this for great grandchildren. We played it as children and wanted the grandchildren and great grandchildren to experience it too. Now at 75 years old we think back on those vintage games.
