Category Description for Pentime Handwriting Series:

This program is designed to teach children handwriting with a minimum of assistance. Eight black and white workbooks help students master the skill of manuscript writing, transition into cursive, and continue to build cursive skills using smaller and smaller lines. In the first workbook, students focus on writing the individual letters on wide lines with a dotted midline. The correct strokes are shown (and numbered) for each letter along with plenty of space for children to practice. The second book continues practice of upper and lowercase letters but adds words and sentences as well. In place of stroke guides, a dot on each letter shows children where to start forming the letter. The third book (Transition) reviews manuscript for 35 pages and then jumps into cursive handwriting for the remaining 60 pages of the book, where students learn the strokes for individual cursive letters and practice connecting them. The rest of the series allows children to fully master cursive writing as they continually practice by writing the letters and copying longer and longer paragraphs on increasingly smaller lines (rulings gradually decrease from 1/2" in Grade 3 to 5/16" in Grade 8). Paragraphs range from fun sentences to Bible verses (close to the ASV version) to excerpts from essays on nature. Captions in the older grades provide interesting facts, and pretty border sheets to color are scattered throughout. - Steph

Most handwriting books are similar, but I like this one for its simplicity and pacing. I like that numbers are introduced right away because their kindergarten math program requires some number writing skills from the very beginning.

We love Pentime! The letter demonstrations are easy to follow and their copy work helps build character and/or is educational. Each page also has small pictures the child can color if they like.

I loved this book for my daughter and am getting another one for her younger sister. I do make a few changes. I alter the letter order to follow HWOT, which can be found on their website. I also alter the instruction for a couple of letters to a pattern that I prefer them to learn. Otherwise the book is pretty much a no prep resource that I would strongly recommend.

BEST ANSWER: It is a style all its own. My children follow the D’Nealian style, but once they learned cursive, the Pentime cursive books are really wonderful.

Should Be Called: Teaching Hieroglyphics ;-)
If you want simple yet thorough, to the point penmanship practice, this is the holy grail right here. There are two books to Level 1, with Level 2 transitioning to cursive halfway through. Don't panic, I panicked, it's smooth and repetitive and you'll be amazed at how quickly your child will adapt. I've had three out of four finish the course with the ability to read AND write cursive without parental involvement, but be aware of that 25% missing the reading ability, you may need to practice the reading half. As for the necessity of cursive, that's up to you. I find it neat that my kids can read things a college student typically can't, but that's just me. They need to practice penmanship either way so if they learn something 'extra' while doing it, I say why not?

These books are all wonderful! The concepts and how they teach penmanship. I just wish the backs were made better as the staples easily tear out of the backs. But wide tape easily solves that problem.

Our family discovered this program some years ago with our first child and we started with book 3 Now we are beginning to homeschool our younger children We use Pathway Readers and Climbing to Good English and I recently discovered that this series is designed to coordinate with those programs The price is very decent it flows perfectly into our language arts program and as with all the components that go with the Pathway Readers it is HIGHLY effective I would recommend this to anyone
