The kit includes a student text, a 6-session DVD series, and a CD-ROM teaching guide for a group setting. Beginning with lessons on shaping the student himself, he shares the effect that the ability to speak can have on one's entire life and helps students conquer their fear of public speaking. He then moves on to teach the characteristics that shape a great speech: gaining maximum impact, reaching the heart of the audience, delivering the talk with confidence, and tips for an unforgettable speech. Each step consists of an interesting book lesson and a 15-30 minute DVD segment. Every lesson begins with a story of a great communicator from history including Billy Graham, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill. You then turn to your TV to learn from Jeff, via DVD, the heart of each lesson. Jeff animatedly shares stories and advice as he talks you through each step. Pages in the book correspond to his lecture so you can follow along and take away the important points. The next section reviews the points Jeff shared in the DVD and goes in-depth with each as it provides specific insight and encouragement to help you apply each lesson to your own life and communication. Students are faced with thoughtful questions to answer in response to each strategy and provided with helpful outlines and worksheets in the personal application section of each lesson. Each chapter ends with a speech project, complete with a helpful outline, to enable you to incorporate the skills just learned into your public speaking. Outlines for additional types of speaking, such as introducing a speaker, making a presentation to one person, giving a eulogy, and other instances are provided in the back. I chose Secrets of Great Communicators set because it looked through, interesting, and not your dry textbook curriculum.

How long does this course take?
BEST ANSWER: I highly recommend this course for a High School Speech class. My oldest son took the Principles of Public Speaking DSST test after completing this course and passed! I designed my HS course to be 1 semester long for 2 hrs a day. He was able to complete the videos and reading and prepare for the DSST test all within the semester. To prepare for the DSST test, I have my kids complete the Petersons practice tests and give them several impromptu speech topics. My daughter completed the course as a modular summer course, she did it for 2 hrs a day and completed it in 4 weeks.... she has not taken the DSST test yet, but is planning to as soon as the test becomes available again after covid. The course is very well done and very engaging.

Is the DVD a separate disc from the CD-ROM?
How many DVD’s are in the learning kit?
Could you please clarify what region the DVD is?. Can it be played in Australia/. Thankyou

Is the DVD licensed for family use only or is it okay to use in a co-op?
BEST ANSWER: Hi Aileen,
I can't give you an official answer but thought I would throw in my opinion. This course seems to be specifically designed to use in a group type setting and really works better that way as most of the lessons have group activities so think it must be OK to use in a co-op. We did it with just one other family and that worked but think a little larger group would have been even better. hth

Would this be considered a "Speech" credit for highschool?
BEST ANSWER: This would definitely be “speech,” but prob not a whole semester credit. I included it in my son’s English class as part of that credit. If you write class descriptions, you should include a unit of speech in the English class description.

Is this an accredited curriculum?
BEST ANSWER: Accreditation is based on a school or institution rather than a particular curriculum. This would be "accredited" if used by an accredited school.

Is there any difference between the older DVD and newer DVD? Can I use the older DVD while my students are using the updated student book?
BEST ANSWER: The basic information is the same, but it's formatted somewhat differently. I tried using an older book for a couple of lessons, but the convenience was worth it to me to purchse a new textbook.

This course should be REQUIRED of every homeschool student in high school Public speaking is a critical skill If you do not have anyone who can walk your child through becoming a competent public speaker then buy this DVD and workbook and let Dr Jeff Myers do the teaching This is a bargain price for what your student will gain Secrets of Great Communicators works best in a group setting but even a single child at home will benefit Students should find an audience for three speeches they prepare while using this curriculum You can use it over a 6 week period or give children two weeks for each lesson and take 12 weeks so the student has time to work on the speeches and give them publicly
