Are there workbooks for this? Does it provide review questions so you know they understood what they just read?

BEST ANSWER: There are workbooks that go with the McGuffey series but they correspond to the 1836 series (#018329) rather than this one.

My Kindergarten son has struggled with learning to read this year We started off spending more than $100 on a fancy phonics program only to abandon it two months in I tried books from the library phonics computer programs on and on BOTH of us were frustrated!Once I purchased the McGuffey First Eclectic Reader things suddenly started clicking! He has been flying through doing at least two readings a day Each lesson begins by introducing new words Because of this he develops confidence in unfamiliar words -before- delving into the story on the pageIn addition to the phonics-based readings there is slate work The slate work assignments are relatively sparse so he is not bogged down with lots of writing practice (He is a child that needs to focus on one thing at a time! Phonics combined with penmanship - as in the $100 program - was NOT working for us!) He does not seem to mind however writing and illustrating an occasional passageThere is virtually no preparation on my part however some of the passages are written in cursive Because we are focusing on only one skill at the moment I type up the cursive stories and print them out for him to readI already have the Second Eclectic Reader on my wish-list for next Fall It has been such a great value for our family and I look forward to teaching his three younger siblings with the same book
