Category Description for MCP Spelling Workout 2001 Ed.:

This updated version is very similar to the older edition. The most noticeable differences are a more contemporary page layout and a reduction in sports-themed headings like "warm-ups" and "pep talks." Other differences include an extra writing activity at the end of each lesson in the student book, but the removal of references to warm-ups, final tests, and bonus words activities. All information and instruction on these activities are now found only in the teachers manual. While you can still "get by" using the program without the teachers manual, you may want the teachers manual to get the most out of the program. Some content has been updated, including several new reading/editing passages and a few new word lists. Aside from these differences most of the pages (while they may not match up exactly in page number) look very much the same. The size/length of the books have not changed. Basically, if youre trying to decide between the editions in your own homeschool, you wont lose out either way. However, if you are using Spelling Workout in a group/class/co-op situation, you will probably want to pick one edition and stick with it to ensure uniformity of word lists, and for ease of checking work. For a better value, homeschool bundles that include the student worktext and teachers edition are now available.

Spelling Workout F worked great for my son in 5th grade. He is a good speller- this is a great simple, workbook for him and doesn't take up much time. We will be using G for 6th grade.

It looks thorough, simple, and not time consuming. I don't want workbooks to take up all my children's learning time, but I do want them to get solid information in small amounts. I don't think more is always better. How much do we remember after a certain amount of time? Probably not much. I want a solid overview of the subject, explained simply, that can be interacted with quickly, so we can move on to other things and activities that interest us.

These workbooks are great for exposure to commonly used words. We expand the lessons by using the lists to practice alphabetizing and dictionary skills.

All four of my boys absolutely love Spelling Workout. If I don't have any other work for them that day, they do this on their own. If they have a full assignment sheet, this is the first thing they do every time. We all love the open and go simplicity of it, as well as the straightforward exercises and games. Great spelling lessons and practice!!

I have used this with many, many students in the private school I taught in for 5 years with great success. I love the phonetically approach as well as the word type approach later on. We always had the students additionally write the words out 2-5x each and write each in a sentence. Each student had a $.25 notebook for this purpose.

I have the teacher editions of this book used previously with other children and wanted to secure the workbooks for the caboose in the family before a new edition came out. Most significantly we really like this curriculum. The format is friendly and fun and teaches basic rules for spelling identified in each lesson.

Spelling Workout is a complete spelling program. I really like the ease of use, plus the proof-reading exercises really strengthen my students' spelling and writing ability. My students go through these books twice before moving onto the next level.

We have been working through this Spelling program through the years and like the layout and independent nature of these books. The only page I don't like is the "Show What You Know". It presents misspelled words and the children have to identify them. While I understand why they thought this would be helpful, we skip these pages. For visual learners, this can confuse them once they see it spelled incorrectly if they have photographic memories. Otherwise, I highly recommend these workbooks.

The illustrations on the cover of each level connect with each of my sons. Their imaginations are fired and spelling looks like fun.
An outstanding series. The crossword puzzle had my 11 year old son happily filling it out (we discussed definitions he wasn’t familiar with and I shows him the handy dandy dictionary at the back of the book) before he even realized he was ‘doing spelling’. The information boxes about the origins of words (every couple of pages in the upper left hand corner) make the book a real page-turner. The origin of the word ‘bachelor’ wooed and won my son instantly. Who wouldn’t want to be considered a knight? ??

This is an excellent spelling course and I highly recommend it!

I love spelling workout books!
My kids do two SWO lessons per day. Each lesson teaches spelling, vocabulary, grammar, editing and creative writing. After 4 lessons, the 5th is a review of those 4.

Easy and Simple to follow
The workbook is written and organized in a way that makes it easy for my 7th grader to do on her own. The word list are in cursive but the list was repeated in print form in one of the vocabulary activities.
