This updated version is very similar to the older edition. The most noticeable differences are a more contemporary page layout and a reduction in sports-themed headings like "warm-ups" and "pep talks." Other differences include an extra writing activity at the end of each lesson in the student book, but the removal of references to warm-ups, final tests, and bonus words activities. All information and instruction on these activities are now found only in the teachers manual. While you can still "get by" using the program without the teachers manual, you may want the teachers manual to get the most out of the program. Some content has been updated, including several new reading/editing passages and a few new word lists. Aside from these differences most of the pages (while they may not match up exactly in page number) look very much the same. The size/length of the books have not changed. Basically, if youre trying to decide between the editions in your own homeschool, you wont lose out either way. However, if you are using Spelling Workout in a group/class/co-op situation, you will probably want to pick one edition and stick with it to ensure uniformity of word lists, and for ease of checking work. For a better value, homeschool bundles that include the student worktext and teachers edition are now available.

I used these books for my eldest son and have lately been using Memoria Press Traditional Spelling for my youngest. I am returning to these Spelling Workout books because I think they offer a more systematic and gradual approach to learning the rules of spelling. Frankly, my beginning speller needs the extra time to create a solid spelling foundation--which these books gave to my other child in spades.

BEST ANSWER: To my knowledge, no. I feel that the books are very grade/age-appropriate. If you aren't sure from which spelling level your child would benefit, then I would choose the spelling book that correlates with your child's reading level, so as not to frustrate or bore him/her. However, please note that as the levels increase, so do the number of words. For example, there are 6 words in a list in level A, 10-15 in B, 20 in C and up. Hope this helps!

I love it as a supplement to our regular ELA curriculum. It really helps my 1st grader (who reads at a second grade level) with being able to spell words that he otherwise reads fine but doesn't always spell correctly when doing writing assignments. It's not his favorite thing to do ( no surprise as he doesn't like most seated work) but the lessons are short and simple and he has already improved and has only completed two lessons.

I regret to say I was very disappointed with this program I don't know if it's because I didn't get the teacher's manual but I didn't see any basic spelling tests in it but it did have tests like "find the misspelled word" I'm more traditional when it comes to spelling and found this to be more of a supplemental program instead of a learning how to spell the words on the word list I bought this program because my kids are doing great with MCP's phonics and math which are excellent and goes at their pace

We took a year off from Spelling Workout and tried a few other programs that I kept hearing recommended We are back to it this year! My daughters love doing the lessons and I love that it is based on phonics rules I think it is perfect for a child who learned to read without a lot of phonics instruction I really like that it incorporates other skills like editing also My daughters have two very different learning styles yet it works with both of them I don't use the Teacher's Manual and I find it very simple to use; we just open the book and do the lesson
