Math is not just numbers! Using Cuisenaire rods, Miquon Math Labs allows children to model numbers and operations concretely. It uses a hands-on, pattern-building, discovery method that fosters independence and creativity in problem solving. The unique page-numbering format of the program allows for flexibility - use each book straight through, covering a variety of topics, or use only the pages in each book relating to a specific topic (easily identified by the alpha-numeric page numbering system).

Instead of holding off on more difficult math topics until later grades, the Miquon approach is unique in teaching all four basic math operations in Grade 1 - plus fractions, clock arithmetic, area, volume and factoring. This builds confidence in children as they see how the basic operations are intterrelated and takes the "mystery" out of these otherwise-delayed topics. By Grade 3, children understand different base systems and graph algebraic equations!

These are not typical workbooks that test what a child already has learned, but lab sheets - teaching pages. Children are shown that, while there is only one correct solution, there are different ways to arrive at it, and it encourages them to develop their own techniques. The "standard" approach is not always the best. For example, which is easier, to teach borrowing and carrying for a problem like 400 - 298 or to teach the the child to restate the problem as 398 - 298 + 2 or 400 - 300 + 2? Techniques like these really help to develop mental dexterity in problme solving. After using Miquon with our seven children, we can attest that this program has promoted flexibility in problem solving and teaches them to find the best technique for the situation. Ours students now tackle new or difficult problems creatively, even fearlessly!

Altogether, the six student workbooks contain over 650 lab sheets. Concepts covered include: counting, odd-even, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, equalities, place value, number line and functions, factoring, squaring, simultaneous equations, graphing equations, geometric recognition, length, area, volume, series and progressions, grid and arrow games, mapping, clock arithmetic, sets, and word problems.

We recommend purchasing the Lab Sheet Annotations. This is the teacher's guide for all six workbooks. Because the approach taken in the program is so different, it explains the reasoning behind the presentation and provides several suggestions on how to present each topic. It also provides preliminary activities for a concrete understanding of the math concepts as well as more detailed explanations for many of the workbook pages. While answers are supplied for some of the more "tricky" sheets, most worksheets are shown sans answers, so take the time to fill in the answers as you correct work for your first Miquon student - then you'll have a completed key to use with the next!

The Miquon Math program would be an excellent start in math to move into any other program, but it would lend itself particularly well to those intending to use the Singapore approach to math in the future.

I was raised on these, and they provide a solid foundation for mathematics that helped bring me all the way through calculus at university for mechanical engineering. I love miquon. I have used the first 3 books with my older child (7yrs) and will be starting the K on the first book this year. It is the only thing we have used and my older child can already multiply and divide up to 100 in her head and is comfortable with fractions.

Our family has loved these math workbooks. They flow through different mathematical concepts and operations so well. Our first graders are doing fractions and division, and it doesn't seem intense. It just makes sense. It's a quirky system, and I definitely recommend the Lab Sheet Annotations (basically the teacher's guide with deeper mathematical explanations and lessons). I highly recommend Miquon for conceptual understanding.

We love these "workbooks". They encourage kids to think mathematically and are easy to implement. They provide a different scope and sequence that is challenging but with the use of cuisinaire rods - kids feel very successful meeting the challenge.

I'm choosing Miquon for the third time, as my third child is ready to begin the books. I'm very satisfied with this unique approach. Miquon helps to keep math interesting with its variety. I think it ersults in a more thorough learning because it presents the material in different ways. I do suggest supplementing with math fact races and/or flash cards.

I used this with my kids and loved it as a math curriculum when I homeschooled. Now I have a grandson starting kindergarten. He likes puzzles and I was wondering if I purchased these to do at my house when he comes to visit - to use as an activity book - He is at my house once a month, and I am not sure if he would want to do something out of it every time he came over. What do you think? Could it be used in this way?

Are these pages printed front and back? Meaning if I was to cut off the binding and put them into a binder, will there be an addition page on one side and lets say a fractions page on the other? If I purchase the PDF off of curricick, will the pages be in color or black and white?

BEST ANSWER: They are front and back and are colored. The pages are perforated. I've not done the PDFs, but have used the material with all of my kids across the past 12 years, and am in the Orange Book with my youngest now. I strongly recommend staying with the physical workbooks in their printed form, because the exercises build on each other and because the previous workbooks have been useful as review/reference materials. The 6 books have taken about 3-4 years to complete, and sometimes, we have gone back from the last book to the first or second to review and rebuild lost/forgotten concepts. Miquon is the sole piece of curriculum that I've continued to use, as designed, with all of my kids.

BEST ANSWER: Here are several to consider. ShillerMath (a Montesorri program) continues in a strong hands on/exploratory approach to math. Beast Academy couples strong concept development and instruction with graphic novel type of illustrations. Finally, Saxon Math is a solid math option with lots of review and repetition. Manipulative options are available for Saxon Math Intermediate 3, 4, and 5. There are placement tests available on our website - search for "math placement tests".

Wonderful books to learn Math. I'm so glad I bought it. My daughter has a hard time with Math and it gives her a different perspective. It's important to get number sense and learn in different ways to really work and get the concepts. I wonderful collection of books. Very clever.

Great Math Curriculum!
I love that this curriculum encourages children to figure things out for themselves and explore with Cuisenair Rods. It is amazing that children understand basic algebra so young, where even some adults get confused with letters and numbers together. I also love that they can learn and do the math lab pages, and it doesn't take a lot time. Especially at the beginning, I had to refer to the Annotations book. Now we can do most of them just by looking at them. I would definitely recommend this program.

Solid math at an affordable price
I love Miquon! It lays a solid conceptual foundation for Math, and the price tag is great! Most kids will need additional practice with math facts, but needs there vary from one child to the next. I prefer getting that practice somewhere besides our primary math curriculum because a curriculum that supplies sufficient practice for one child will bore another. I love the simple colored pages of the workbooks. The cuisenaire rods are simple, useful manipulative to accompany the books. Some people seem to rely heavily on the Lab Sheet Annotations, i've referred to them a couple of times over the course of years out of curiosity. If you're somewhat mathy, I think the Lab Sheet Annotations are unnecessary.

I’m beginning this set with my sixth and final student. My children are all so different, yet Miquon math has given them all a solid base from which to learn and truly engage mathematics, and they show a solid understanding that many of their peers don’t have at a young age. Teaches kids to be mathy
Miquon is not written in a drill-and-kill format. It's a "numbers are interesting. Let's play with them" format. Miquon is interesting for Mama too, as I never know what will come next. Miquon provides an amazing foundation for future math.
