Orton Phonics Cards to Accompany A Guide to Teaching Phonics
This set of Phonics Cards includes 100 (2 1/8" x 3 3/8") printed phonogram cards on glossy cardstock, plus nine write-your-own cards.
The Orton Phonics Cards (2 3/16" x 3 3/8") are designed to be used in conjunction with the Guide to Teaching Phonics, which includes specific instructions for their use. These cards reinforce the multisensory Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching phonics. They can also be used to provide valuable support to teachers and students using any phonics program.
The cards consist of 100 common phonograms to be used for teaching the language code units and their sequences in words for reading, writing, and spelling. The 6 main groupings are:
- Alphabet letters
- Consonant digraphs
- Consonant blends
- Long vowel teams
- Vowel diphthongs
- Common endings
It is recommended that each student have his or her own set of cards in addition to the teachers set.
Since the 1950s, Dr. Samuel Orton has been recognized as the pioneer in this country in bringing the neurological approach to the identification and education of children with language difficulties. Often his work is associated with that of his colleague, Anna Gillingham, However, this set of materials was developed by Dr. Orton's wife, June Lyday Orton. Although this is a guide rather than a formal manual, all the elements of Dr. Orton's approach to phonics and reading is here in its simplicity. The Guide (Little Yellow Book) provides three elements: 1) background material on the English language and its phonetic structure; 2) principles of teaching phonics with the integrated, multisensory approach formulated by Dr. Orton and his colleagues, and 3) a sequential program of instruction, consisting of twenty-two units, with cumulative word lists and various types of practice exercises. Armed with this book, a homeschooler can teach phonics well. The corresponding set of Phonics Cards offers a more pick-up-and-go option. There are 100 (2 1/8" x 3 3/8") printed phonogram cards - glossy cardstock - plus nine write-your-own cards (guide is 88 pgs, spiral bound). ~ Janice
