I just compared my set of these with "original McGuffey" readers -- it seems much was revised: the stories are almost exclusively different. Can anyone shed light on that for me? Also, the original McGuffey's have 4 readers, this set has 6. I'm very confused.

BEST ANSWER: The "original McGuffey" readers were published in 1836 and were almost immediately revised and then revised again. The revisions were completed by 1853 and the series had a progression of copyrights from 1876 to 1920. The revisions of the original included expanding the series from four readers to six (although the general range of the reading levels is similar). As noted, most of the stories are completely different. The revised series we carry is a "facsimile" edition and has (more or less) the same look as those printed long ago. The "original" series we carry has been re-typeset. The books are larger than they would have been in the 1800s and have a larger font.

We love these McGuffey Readers The revised editions are our preferred choice Each lesson has new letter sounds along with pronunciation marks to help children remember which sound the letter makes such as long E or short E; hard G or soft G It's a phonics based system that was used for over a hundred year with great success which is why we chose this easy system We are Active Duty Army so we travel a lot It's small and portable I just pick the book that each child needs and place it in my purse so we can read while DH is driving I love these so much I own two sets!

I have always desired to go back to the day when morals and virtues were taught by the literature children read These books fulfilled that need Good old town values like respecting your elders and appreciating Gods hand in our lives My children have learned to read while supporting their religious standards without any tone of preaching These books are set up in a progressive lesson format with new words and sounds outlined in the beginning and periodic reviews Each lesson also has adorable pictures to illustrate the stories My children enjoy their personal time reading to me from their McGuffys books These are the type of books you will want your children to see on your shelf!
