Publisher Description:

With a wide range of habitats, plants, and animals, the Pacific Northwest is a wonderful region for getting outside and discovering nature. There is so much to see and appreciate--even in your backyard or at a nearby park. Teach your children to love and protect the great outdoors.

This workbook by naturalist Dr. Robert Niese features more than 20 simple, fun introductions to astronomy, birds, geology, and more. Plus, over a dozen activities help kids to make hypotheses, experiment, and observe. The 19 hands-on science projects--such as raising native caterpillars, making mushroom spore prints, and attracting moths with an ultraviolet light--put students in control of their own learning!

You never know what your children will uncover in their outdoor classroom. Every day is a little treasure hunt. If they keep good records and share what they find, their observations can even help scientists learn more about nature in the states of Oregon and Washington. So get the Backyard Science & Discovery Workbook: Pacific Northwest, and get started on a lifetime of discovery.

This comprehensive science encyclopedia is a pleasure to behold It has an uncluttered colorful layout that is easy for students to follow Each topic has a title at the top of the page followed by an introductory paragraph The topic is then fleshed out with illustrations and photographs accompanied by clear explanations Compared to other science encyclopedias I've seen the illustrations are outstanding - both easy to understand and realistic Many detailed photographs are also included In addition to all the information in the book an internet site has been established by DK and Google to investigate topics further This works much like the Usborne Internet-Linked books but the website also includes an ability to print out some of the beautiful graphics included in the book Perfect for science projects! Topics include Matter and Materials (Chemistry) Forces and Energy (including Light & Sound) Electricty & Magnetism Space Earth Plants Animals & Human Body All in all this is a very user-friendly and complete resource for kids in the intermediate grades It makes science both enjoyable and understandable
