The Student Book provides both the weekly lessons and the space to complete them. Weekly lessons devoted to review (no new material) are peppered throughout the course but predominate in the last half. Appendices in the spiral-bound student book provide the complete story (a compilation of the daily sentences), various IEW resource pages, and a Grammar Glossary that serves as a reference tool.

Publisher Description:

Ingenious! Students hunt for and correct errors in daily passages that cumulatively tell a story. Fix It! Grammar™ is a six-year, incremental program that encourages students to apply new grammar knowledge in every lesson while continuing to practice what they already know.

Level 1 Nose Tree presumes no prior grammar knowledge and introduces basic parts of speech, end-mark punctuation, phrases, clauses, homophones, and more.

Category Description for Fix It! Grammar:

Sometimes it’s hard to imagine a well-loved program getting any better. IEW’s Fix It! Grammar - 4th edition – will change your mind on that. There are some excellent improvements, most notably in the teaching-assignment sequences, but the fun-to-use and user-friendly program is still distinctive in its systematic approach that melds structure-of-language instruction with usage-based practice. Some of the improvements include thorough explanations, lists of errors for each passage, blank lines for copywork, expanded scope and sequence, and seamless transition between levels allowing for mastery plus spiraling.

The six-year course sequence has changed but the grade and IEW writing level designations for each level remain the same.

Level 1 (4-5; SSS-A) is still Nose Tree.
Level 2 (4-5; SSS-A) (formerly Robin Hood) is Town Mouse and Country Mouse.
Level 3 (6-8; SSS-B) (formerly Frog Prince) is Robin Hood.
Level 4 (6-8; SSS-B) (formerly Little Mermaid) is Mowgli and Shere Khan.
Level 5 (8-12; SSS-C) (formerly Chanticleer) is Frog Prince.
Level 6 (8-12; SSS-C) (formerly Sir Gawain) is Little Mermaid.

Obviously, if you’ve been using this program, you may be concerned about a next grade level course with the same title as last year. IEW assures us that “the stories themselves have been rewritten and the teaching content has been expanded. Therefore, there should be no concern if a student repeats a story from third edition while working through the new fourth edition Fix It! Grammar series.” While designed as a six-year, start-to-finish program, according to IEW, Frog Prince (Level 5) and Little Mermaid (Level 6) are useful for high school students who need a refresher course or who are preparing for standardized tests.

There are 30 weekly lessons in each course. Each of these begin with one day of expanded and targeted instruction coupled with examples. Daily assignments for the remaining four days follow. These daily lessons are based on passages from the course story. A guide at the top of each lesson page lists the assignment’s tasks. Each lesson has four distinct tasks:

Read It! - read passage and look up vocabulary word.
Mark It! - mark the passage using the guide.
Fix-It! - correct the passage using the guide.
Rewrite It! - copy the corrected passage.

Grammar lessons should take only 15 minutes per day, require teacher-student interaction one day per week, and allow the student to work somewhat independently the remaining days. This path to mastery suggests review cards for key grammar concepts as well as a grammar glossary for reference. In other words, the student is being equipped and trained to incorporate excellent grammar into their writing as well as being prepared to edit their own work.

Each course is comprised of a teacher's manual plus a student book. The general methodology is straight-forward. Read/discuss instructional material, edit one sentence daily, and then rewrite the passage correctly. Defining the vocabulary words that are identified in each sentence is an added bonus.

The Teacher Manual starts with some general how-to-and-why information plus a complete scope and sequence for the course. Daily lesson plans include the same grammar instruction found in the student book plus a wealth of additional information and complete corrective support (i.e. answer keys) for each of the daily sentence edits. "Fixes" are explained and grammatical "talking points" are provided. Helpful sidebar teacher's notes serve as a cross-reference to other lessons as well as interesting historical tidbits such as the name (pilcrow) for the paragraph mark and its origin (Middle Ages) and purpose (to separate content). Appendices with the story, IEW references, and a copy of the Grammar Glossary complete the Teacher Manual.

The Teacher/Student Combo packages provide both a Teacher Manual and a Student book.

In case it's not clear, the goal of these courses is FUN - along with learning and remembering good grammar, of course. They provide a light touch that is embedded in practicality. Obviously designed to complement the IEW writing courses, they are integrated with IEW terms such as dress-ups, acronyms (FANBOYS), and clause starters (www.asia.b). The Fix It! materials can be done as a stand-alone program. I've been a lukewarm fan of editing approaches to grammar, but this one is also strong in providing systematic, structural coverage of grammar. This combination of instruction and practical application is highly effective. TMs - 225 - 250 pgs. spiral-bound; SBs - 120 pgs spiral-bound ~ Janice

Thumbing through the teacher's manual I have at home this seems like a fun and functional way to apply the rules of grammar. I will start this with my older students after they have learned to diagram, have an understanding of basic grammar rules and parts of speech, and are able to do most of it on their own. I also like that it works through one particular work of literature.

This will be our second year using this curriculum and I love it. Having to keep up with all of the parts of speech they are learning all at once really helps them retain it. My kids also do not complain about doing it because it does not take very long, but yet they are much stronger in their grammar skills.

We've tried several grammar programs, and all have come up short. Thorough, yes, but tear-producing for this mom who never had any formal grammar instruction and her sentence-diagramming adverse kids. We're going to give this one a try. Hoping the different approach will work for us.

I thought it would be convenient to have the glossary right there attached to the student work pages for handy reference. I thought the spiral binding might take up less space than a 3-ring binder for holding worksheets I could print on my own.

This seems like the perfect grammar work for my older son who is advanced with reading and Language Arts and loves to "follow the rules" of English. The very short and concise lessons will provide great grammar practice for him, but not be big, clunky lessons that will take up our time with material he already knows. Outside of these short grammar lessons, he can get plenty of reading and writing practice with our History and Science curriculums.

My 8 yr old son will be in 3rd grade in the fall and using this curriculum. What would be the best curriculum/way to prep him for this in the next 4 months? What grammar curriculum did you use leading up to this that helped your child prepare? Thank you.
Elizabeth on Apr 2, 2022
BEST ANSWER: You really don't have to prep for book 1 of Fix it! It IS the entry level to grammar instruction per IEW.
Does this teach about what makes complete sentences and about run-on sentences?
A shopper on Apr 10, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it’s a great way to start the sentencing and it’s even made for all ages... your finding the problem after learning what the right way looks like.(ACT is made of this kind of questions). Good luck mama
Need one per student?
A shopper on Mar 17, 2021

BEST ANSWER: Yes, the physical and digital copies are identical in content. The only difference is the need to print the pages from the digital copy.
Does this curriculum cover diagramming at some point?
A shopper on Feb 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No definitely not in The Nose Tree. I do not think diagraming would be a priority for this curriculum.
Is this book reproducible for multiple children or would I need to get a book for each child?
User on Sep 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I think if you buy the teacher book, you can get a free digital copy of the student book on the IEW website. Also, the copyright of the student book states that you can copy for use for multiple children within your family/home.
I will be starting iew on DVD level a with my kids. I saw this was recommended. Would I start this the same day I start that program? How do you use this together? Every day? Thanks!
A shopper on Aug 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Fix-It Grammar is a completely separate item and can be started anytime you like, independent from IEW's flagship Structure and Style DVD writing instruction program. The Structure & Style DVD program teaches writing skills and writing style, and Fix-It Grammar teaches grammar. They can be done separately with no problems, but Fix-It Grammar complements the Structure & Style DVD-based course nicely by using a lot of the same terminology (such as "-ly adverbs" and "who-which" clauses). Fix-It Grammar also employs copywork of quality writing, which enhances any writing program. Fix-It Grammar teaches grammar by taking a complete story and having children identify a targeted grammatical element in one sentence per day, four days a week. Each week introduces a new grammar element, while also reviewing all previously learned grammatical concepts to achieve mastery. Each day students label the parts of grammar in the day's sentence from the story, look up a vocabulary word per sentence in a dictionary, and then copy the completed sentence in a notebook. By the end of the course, they've copied the entire story. My kids like it because they're eager to do the next sentence to find out what will happen in the story.
Any thoughts on using this with a variety of ages? I'm considering it for my 3rd, 5th, and 7th graders - but worry it would be too hard for the 3rd grader, too easy for the 7th grader. Are there any modifications for different ages?

Fix It! Grammar: Level 1 Nose Tree Teacher's Manual
Fix It! Grammar: Level 1 Nose Tree Teacher's Manual
BEST ANSWER: I think it would work with the 3rd and 5th grader. I am planning on using it with my 3rd and 4th grader this coming year. I would suggest starting your 7th grader with it but going through it faster. I did this with my 7th and 10th grader doing 2 days per day. If you did this your 7th grader could get through books 1 and 2 in one school year.
I am looking for a grammar curriculum that is not teacher intensive. Would you describe this as so? Any suggestions?
Sarah S on Jun 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would not really consider this curriculum teacher intensive because they have everything scripted in the teacher manual. Every sentences is labeled in the manual plus helpful tips, but it does require you to look over their work and make sure everything is correct. This is a building grammar curriculum. They introduce one new concept and work on it for two weeks before adding a new one. It really does take 15-20 minutes a day. My boys love it because its not overwhelming yet really teaches grammar in detail. I also really like because it has vocabulary and writing. The other one you might want to consider to go with Fix IT Grammar, is IEW's Writing Intensive. This is a writing/grammar curriculum that is on DVD. Andrew Pudewa is the teacher and really explains how grammar and writing work together. If you student does NOT like to write, this is a great curriculum. There are videos on YouTube that are very helpful and explain Fix It Grammar and Writing Intensive.
As for another suggestion, you might want to look at Easy Grammar. I have never used but know several people who have and they really like it. I would say , just by looking at it, that Easy Grammar is more basic and Fit It Grammar is more detailed. I picked Fit It because I wanted my children to have detail grammar and writing skills and this make it painless, plus IEW is the best when it comes to grammar and writing. This is our 3rd year using it and we really like. Hope that helps!
I have a sixth grader and was wondering which book I should start her in. The Nose(book 1) or Robin Hood(Book 2)?
A shopper on Feb 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't have a lot of experience with this but I would say either one could be fine. I used The Nose Tree for all three of mine last year (5th, 7th and 9th) because we were completely new to the curriculum and it was also easier to only have one level. Now this year my 3rd grader is doing it. The curriculum is fairly straightforward so I think either one could work.
Do you need the teacher manual with this book?
A shopper on Sep 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I found the teacher's manual essential. Yet, if you purchase the teacher's manual you can print the student's manual with a link provided by the publisher. I didn't prefer to print the material so I ordered the student's workbook.

Excellent Grammar Course.
Editing one sentence a day and marking parts of speech in that one sentence is a great way of teaching and reinforcing grammar concepts. We were using BJU Press, and I must say this is much better!! The children enjoy it as well. You’re editing one line of a story per day and applying grammar concepts in a more real-life setting than in other grammar books. My second grader is doing very well with this book!

I would absolutely recommend this curriculum for grammar. The concept is so simple and straightforward - learn and implement everyday. The kids don't even realize how it is being reinforced daily with a vocabulary word defined daily.

My 3rd grader loves playing detective and finding all the mistakes and parts of speech. We’ve been supplementing his writing while he’s stuck at home during quarantine. I also used fix-its as a middle school teacher to start every language arts lesson; it was a painless way to teach grammar and provided a calm, focused transition.
