Your child can learn to: skip-count by whole numbers, compare and order numbers, identify ordinal position to the twentieth, identify and complete patterns, add and subtract multidigit numbers, divide by single-digit divisors, add positive and negative numbers, picture, name, and order fractions, add and subtract fractions with common denominators, understand and calculate measurements, compare and measure mass, identify function rules, graph ordered pairs on a coordinate graph, identify angles, identify lines of symmetry.

Category Description for Saxon K-3 Program:

The Teacher's Manual contains the actual lesson plans and information vital to the effective presentation of math concepts. The consumable Meeting Books are used during the teacher-student "meeting" in which concepts are introduced, demonstrated and practiced. If teaching more than one student at the same level, you will only need one meeting book. Consumable Student Workbooks are used in grades 1-3 only and contain student materials, flash cards and practice pages. The Math K Home Study Kit contains teacher edition and meeting book. Math 1, 2, and 3 kits contain teacher edition, meeting book, and a set of 2 workbooks. Manipulatives are a vital, integral part of the program; these are not included in the Home Study Kits, but are available through us also.

Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

I've been on the learning end and on the teaching end of Saxon math. I like how the concepts build on top of one another cumulatively rather than focusing on a subject, then moving on. As a student, Saxon math took a little learning curve to adjust to the way it words questions and makes you critically think, but after catching on, I liked the consistent, logical flow from lesson to lesson and from book to book as I progressed. As a teacher, I liked the scripted lessons and the continual review.

I used Saxon 1 and 2 for first and second grade. I like the open and go instructions with little outside work on my part (just making sure we have any supplies needed for the lesson). I like the spiral review so my son doesn't forget skills. The calendar meeting and amount of repetition can be modified to meet your students needs. I like that Saxon uses a written format for student practice as I think it is important to be able to show the work (not just type the answer as in a digital program).

Saxon is just what we needed. Constant reinforcement on the past lessons we have learned, and gentle introduction to new concepts. Constantly building upon past concepts. Ultimately nurturing mastery.
Megan G on Apr 13, 2020
My mom, a special needs para, referred me to this curriculum. She remembers when the school district used it for the 3-5th grade special needs class and she loved seeing how the children were able to retain the information and have a true understanding of the math they were learning. She's been sorely disappointed with the new curriculum choices for the special needs class now, as the students are not able to fully grasp the concepts before they are forced to move on.

We used Saxon Math Last year and we loved it. Its very well laid out and very narrative. If you're looking for flashy pages this is not the curriculum for you. I chose this program because of the recommendations and was very happy with it. We skip the meeting strip most days.

On average, how long does a lesson usually take?
A shopper on Jun 25, 2019
BEST ANSWER: If you do everything from start to finish it would take 45-60 minutes. I usually cherry pick some of the warm up/reviews in the beginning to shorten it and tend to skip some of the activities of the lesson if I can teach the concept in a simple way (for example one day she has to have a pretend store to grasp the concept of money, I would just write on the paper instead of having her put prices on stuffed animals but tell the same story... I have 3 other kids so I don't have time to make it fun) and in a few cases it would take only half hour. I consider my kids rather good at math, though not very quick, so the worksheets generally take them less than 20 minutes. On bad days, though, if you include the worksheets it might run longer than an hour if you did everything exactly as it is laid out.
Where are the meeting strips?
A shopper on Jun 8, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The meeting strips are/can be used with the daily warm-ups. There is a space for the problem of the day, which you need to write out ahead of time and if I remember correctly, the daily pattern from the warm-up. As the course progresses, the strips may change in content, adding coin counting.
Is this common core aligned?
A shopper on Apr 3, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The Saxon Math 3 materials have a 1994 copyright. Accordingly, they were produced long before Common Core (2012). If there is any alignment, it is accidental.
Is it common core aligned?
A shopper on Apr 3, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure what all common core entails but I do know there is common core methods in it. I'm not sure that most curriculums aren't common core aligned now.
is this meant for homeschool children ?
A shopper on Sep 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I used Saxon 3 math 2 years ago. It worked very well for homeschooling my 3rd grader. He did very well in his math scores on CAT for 3 rd grade required for PA. I love teaching with this curriculum. I do remember borrowing some math manipulative from the library. I hope this helps. I have been homeschooling for 20 years and have never considered switching to another math curriculum.
What exactly is in this kit? Does it come with the fact cards?
A shopper on Sep 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the Home Study Kit - #018401 - includes the fact cards (along with the Teacher Manual, Student Workbook, and Meeting Book).
What edition is this?
A shopper on Oct 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Saxon Math 3 is the first edition. There is a newer edition found in the public schools but the homeschool kit is the first edition with an early 90's copyright.

Quarantine Math led to Saxon
We knew our child was struggling in Math, but teaching them at home help us see the struggles first hand. We love how the Saxon approach circles back on the basics to catch up on things students might have missed.
Using Saxon our child move at their own pace, and we can be sure they are not missing anything important. We are now seeing great progress. Thank you!

Easy to follow and teach math curriculum for the foreign homeschooling moms and dads.
Being a foreigner for the USA I struggled to homeschool my son with math and English language. Saxon math made it easy by writing comprehensive lesson to lesson instructions that now my son can read himself and finish most of the lessons on his own. I also learn a great deal about the words and specific phrases that explain math concepts.

Not a Fan
I felt the program was a bit too repetitive and dry. I thought the focus on calendar, temperature and money everyday was tedious. We used for a few months but my son, who loves math, did not look forward to the lessons. We ended up going with Beast Academy which seems to be a better fit for him. My daughter is working through Saxon 6/5 and it’s been fine for her. It really depends on the student.

My daughter will soon be 8. She is technically in 2nd grade but is currently going through this level with a bit of extra help from mom. She is grasping it very well. I'm very happy with this curriculum.

A good choice
We switched from Singapore because my daughter needed extra practice and more review. As someone who often skips the basics, It helps me become a better teacher and go over things that I wouldn't normally do. I do get tired of how long this program takes but it has been exactly what my daughter needed

Works well
This is our first experience with Saxon and it has worked well for us. While the daily lessons introduce perhaps too little new information, we do love the circular nature of the materials. Revisiting topics over and over solidifies the material. We find ourselves doing 2-3 lessons a day and that pace seems appropriate. Recommend without reservation.
