Category Description for Classic Curriculum Arithmetic Workbooks:

Back in the 1800's children completed their Ray's Arithmetic work either orally or on chalkboards or personal slates. I'll bet these kids would have loved to have these babies. Series One workbooks teach the skills needed before beginning Ray's: writing, counting, combining sets, comparing numbers to 20. Series Two requires use of Ray's Primary Arithmetic and covers addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through 9 along with time, measurement, and money problems. Series Three and Four requires Ray's Intellectual Arithmetic. Series Three continues work in learning the facts of the times and division tables, working word problems, fractions and mixed numbers. Series Four covers basic operations on integers and fractions, equivalent fractions, least common multiplier, and ratio. Throughout the series there is a continual emphasis on learning and reciting the fact tables as well as working story problems. Workbook pages are black and white with simple illustrations in the earlier books. Periodic reviews and quizzes and a test complete each book. Each series is designed to be used in a year with each book in the series being used in one quarter. Except for Series One, all answer keys are included. ~ Janice

Category Description for Ray's Arithmetic:

In America's one-room schoolhouses, Ray's Arithmetic was used alongside the McGuffey Readers. These are exact reproductions of the originals and their small size (4.5" x 7.25") cause one difficulty. They do not easily lay flat, making copying difficult. But the no-nonsense topic coverage provides old-fashioned competence so it is easy to understand why they are recommended by The Well-Trained Mind. Primary Arithmetic covers all four basic functions: addition, subtraction, multiplication, & division in single digits with word and money problems. New Intellectual Arithmetic reviews those four functions with multiple digits adding fractions and introducing ratio and percent. Practical Arithmetic continues the four functions along with fractions, decimals, percents, metrics, and introduces interest, discount, insurance, taxes, ration, proportions, square and cube roots, measurement, and progressions. Higher Arithmetic reviews the four functions and continues more advanced work in all the Practical Arithmetic topics including percentage applications with and without time. The Teachers Guide, designed to encourage teacher-student interaction, provides a scope and sequence as well as general information on math instructional stages (i.e. manipulatives, mental, abstract). There are also grade by grade teaching sequences along with a Planning Guide that shows a typical day and suggests weekly lesson plans as well as providing an assessment chart and test schedule. what grade is this and has the workbook been written in?

BEST ANSWER: It will be a new book and unmarked. The series 1 is considered first grade. However, the Workbook 1 can be used for kindergarten. I used workbook 1 for my daughter's kindergarten year since it mostly focuses on writing numbers and counting. So this year we started Series 1 workbook 2 for her first grade math. I've found this allows for supplementing concepts or expanding on things such as using money, units of measurement etc.

This is our first official year of homeschooling I purchased two copies of Classic Curriculum Arithmetic Series 1 Workbook 1 One for each of our twin boys who are in Kindergarten this year and were just over 55 years old when we started the school year the middle of August Before the start of the school year I purchased the whole set of Ray's Arithmetic books and intended to use them with my boys for Kindergarten Upon receiving Ray's I realized that Ray's Primary Arithmetic is really meant to be started in 1st grade and my boys did not yet have the basic skills required to use Ray's Primary Arithmetic So after researching a bit I decided to give Classic Curriculum Arithmetic Series 1 a try as it can be used as a primer to Ray's Primary Arithmetic At the start of Kindergarten my boys knew how to count objects but they did not know how to write any numbers at all (well besides numbers 0 and 1) So Classic Curriculum Arithmetic Series 1 Workbook 1 was a perfect fit for them because this book started out with learning to write numbers Before I knew it they could write numbers 1-10 all on their own! Then the lessons progressed on to counting a group of objects and writing the number on the line next to the group of objects After that they learned how to combine sets of objects (very basic addition) I love the way that these basic addition problems are presented For example "1 and 1 are 2" I like that it's using words that my kids are familiar with and there is no need to use the word "plus" or to even mention that they are adding Next they learn "more than" or "less than" sometimes they are writing the word "more" or "less" on a line and other times they are circling "is more than" or "is less than" So they have learned to write these words and to recognize/read them as well Next they learn to write 11-15 and then 15-20 After learning to write 11-20 there are more counting and "more than" and "less than" exercisesClassic Curriculum Arithmetic Series 1 Book 1 is so easy to use There is no planning that I need to do ahead of the fact I simply open the book explain to my boys what needs to be done they do their work and I answer any questions they may have and go over their answers when they are done I don't believe there is a teacher's guide for this workbook nor do I think there needs to be one One of the things I love about this workbook is that it is printed in black and white My boys are easily distracted and I feel that colorful pages would ony make it harder for them to focus I am completely satisfied with my purchase and would highly reommend this workbook to anyone who is looking for a simple and very affordable way to teach their young child basic kindergarten math My boys have about a week left before they have completed this workbook Each workbook in Series 1 is intended to provide 9 weeks of instruction We started out slowly in the beginning so they'll have Book 1 completed in 11 weeks I am confident that they will be ready to move on to Book 2 upon completion of Book 1 I purchased Book 2 last week and received it yesterday I have looked through Book and am happy with what I have seen so far I intend to have them complete all 4 books in Series 1 this school year I believe doing so will have them prepared to start with Ray's Arithmetic for 1st Grade I am even considering ordering Classic Curriculum Arithmetic Series 2 workbooks next school year to use with Ray's Arithmetic Thank you Rainbow Resource for stocking such a wonderful workbook!!!!
