This is a replacement for my misplaced copy. My older children had used this and it was wonderful help to them. The basic skill from this course helped them in higher level writing.

The reviews from others seemed promising. I have two school aged kids and I remembered hating writing until I was placed in a writing program my school offered after hours and I fell in love. I'm in my first year of homeschooling and was referred to this program by countless parents including Erica with Confessions of a Homeschooler so I figured I had to give it a try since traditional workbooks and language arts textbooks haven't interested my oldest.

IEW is a solid writing program and we look forward to teaching our younger two.

We do IEW with Classical Conversations, but my 10 year old son has trouble understanding it. I wanted to have the dvds so we can go at our own pace, and have him learn from Mr. Pudewa. The people I asked who use them highly recommend them.

I chose this writing program for my homeschooled third grader because of the very positive comments from others.

I first saw it on the book list of the university style school my kids attended in the previous school year for the upper elementary grades. We decided to take back territory we had ceded to the school last year (i.e. full homeschool), as we were unhappy with some curriculum, but this one I think is worthwhile. After watching several independent reviews on youtube and seeing how it works, I decided to invest in it.

talked with IEW at length about this program. Love the brilliance and thoroughness of Pudewa's materials.

I used IEW Levels B & C with my older children. We all benefited so much from them that I want to begin my younger children with these now that they are ready for writing instruction.

I wanted something that would help my daughter to improve her writing skills. I have heard nothing but great reviews about this program.
Arianne R on Jan 19, 2018
All the reviews are wonderful. We have the teaching manual, but I struggle to effectively teach it to our children. Our daughter and I have watched a few of the DVDs directed toward parents/teachers and enjoyed them. We want to get a good base for writing and thought this would be a wise investment.

I have read many good reviews of this product. It looks like it will be an awesome writing program! We used Writing Strands in the past and found it a bit convoluted.

This program has a good track record for turning reluctant writers into happy writers.

I have used the upper level SWIs and they are a wealth of information. I am purchasing the level A for a younger group now. As a parent and a Co-hey let's talk teacher, these are infinitely better than the Teaching Writing Structure and Style DVDs, in my opinion. You watch Andrew Pudua, hands on teaches me how to teach. They are way more easy to get through too because the TWSS is quite long and dry, but these are quite fun.

There are many curriculums you like for awhile then abandon and move on. I am confident we will use IEW all the way through High School. Learning to write well is so important and this is, quite simply, the best way to teach it.

Does this cover all of language arts - grammar, spelling, phonics, copywork? Or just writing and I still have to figure the rest out?
User on Jul 15, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Student Writing Intensive A is a writing program which covers grammar in part, but not thoroughly. IEW provides a grammar program called Fix It Grammar. It’s important for grades 1-3 to have a general grammar instruction on parts of speech and basic mechanics such as capitalization and punctuation; but a thorough and formal grammar instruction is best between 4th and 5th grade. This is not a reading program or handwriting program, nor is it a spelling and vocabulary program. It is a wonderful program that teaches how to write effectively. I highly recommend it, but I chose to wait until my children were at a point they could read and also could write comfortably enough to handle writing a long paragraph or two. In my opinion, there really aren’t many language arts programs that cover every single aspect in one book or curriculum set. To incorporate literature and writing, IEW has some great books to be used after this program so that the student first has a solid foundation in knowing HOW to write so they may be able to apply that knowledge to any subject. So to be fair and answer the last question you asked, yes you will need to add to this for a complete language arts curriculum-at minimum, a spelling and a vocabulary program. How much to add really depends on the students age and abilities. I personally don’t think there is anything wrong with doing a writing intensive for half the year with this then second semester focus on literature and using the lessons learned from IEW to give summaries or reports on the books read. Just a suggestion we have used in case it may help. Wish you the best in putting your school year together. This issue is something I have had to work through as well and it’s not easy, especially with so many good options to chose from and put together. It’s a balancing act to be thorough but not overload and overwhelm. I hope this was helpful and answered your questions well.
Where should someone start? This family has 6th and 7th grade boys with very little formal composition experience.

Should she do Structure and Style? or Student Writing Intensive A?
A shopper on Sep 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Teaching Writing Structure and Style is directed to teachers/parents and includes an overview of the entire nine writing units that make up the IEW approach to writing. It provides tools for teaching, sample lessons, and grading checklists. Student Writing Intensive is directed toward students. You would be looking at Level B because it is targeting grades 6th - 8th. I would suggest the B level even though the students have little formal composition training. Both A and B levels start with basics. Between the video lessons and the syllabus, there are writing lessons for a semester's worth of writing assignments (the writing component of a typical English credit/class for one year). IEW strongly suggests that parents go through Structure and Style prior or at the same time as students are going through Student Writing Intensive. However, there is a summary Structure and Style video included with each Student Writing Intensive video seminar.

Teaching Writing Structure and Style:

BEST ANSWER: We are expecting these by end of this week (8/24) or the beginning next week.
Does this coe with everything I need to complete the program? Is there an answer guide?
Sarah on Jun 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: There is no answer guide for writing. The teacher set is crucial for learning the style Then if you want writing samples provided for you instead of providing your own in addition to a DVD teaching the student buy this set (A, B or C) as well There is a bundle for both.
Does Student Writing Intensive on DVD Level A come with student sheet or do I need to oder them separately?
User on Mar 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The notebook/binder included with this set does include the student pages. It is the same as the item #001583. You can order additional binders if you are teaching more than one student.

Great so far!!
So far this approach has been very helpful. We are only in lesson 1 so far and my children are learning note taking skills and how to rewrite information in their own words. This has been super helpful for even my struggling writer.

This program helped my 3rd grader go from crying when it was time to "do writing" to it being his favorite subject. We're in CC and this was the PERFECT prep for 4th grade Essentials.

Exceptional Program
This is an thoroughly excellent and delightful writing curriculum. Having found it, I feel confident my kids will be proficient writers with all the tools they need to do whatever they chose. The instructor, Andrew Pudewa, is engaging for my kids and myself alike as he presents a comprehensive curriculum in a easy-to-implement format. Not only are the kids learning foundational skills in being an articulate communicator, I am expanding my own skills as well! What a bonus!

One Amazed Momma
I am a homeschool mother of seven. We have homeschooled all of our children. I currently have two that are graduated, two that are in high school, and three in elementary school. I have always been intimidated by writing because to me it seemed very abstract. I appreciate facts and right or wrong answers. Thankfully my older children have done well despite the fact I have somewhat neglected their writing education. Someone strongly suggested that I try student writing intensive A for my third grader. I was highly skeptical and intimidated . After the very first lesson I was amazed at how simple and logical writing became. My third-grader picked it up immediately and concurrently summarizes an article more efficiently than his freshman sibling. I’m planning on zooming through the program with my highschoolers this summer. I would highly recommend This complete program to anyone.

I've always struggled to get my 9 year-old son to write, and I've found it difficult to know how to grade his writing. We've completed 4 lessons in this curriculum and so far he is really enjoying it. He likes watching the videos and has enjoyed the writing assignments. The curriculum is also very clear on how to grade. I think the program is great - especially for boys. I'm very pleased!

My son is writing! MY SON is writing! MY SON IS WRITING! Not only is he writing he is taking the initiative to complete his SWI lessons! I saw this program at least 3-4 years ago and didnt even look at it because it was a writing program and well I have boys Oh so foolish! Besides its not just a writing program! Your student(s) will also receive grammar and public speaking instruction Since our oldest is 11 I could have started him with SWI-B however he has three younger brothers that will be using this program so at IEWs recommendation I purchased level A There are also downloads available on IEWs website for the parent to glean more information on teaching writing and grammar This is a fantastic resource one that has helped change the way I teach my children! The systematic approach gives children a specific outline and checklist so they know exactly what is expected of them Mr Pudewa gives the children the subject matter to write about as well so there isnt that blank stare into space as they wonder what to write Also Mom is required to grade on that checklist only The parent-teacher has an opportunity to edit (but not give a lecture on) the paper prior to the final draft of each project What that means is that we simply edit the grammatical errors saving the grammar lesson for the next class time So expectations are constant and measurable Whew! Students also have the opportunity to work on their public speaking skills by reading the keyword outline back to an audience (ie Family) From listening to downloads on IEWs website I also learned of Mr Pudewas rather revolutionary method for teaching grammar His first recommendation would be to teach Latin (or another second language) rather than English Grammar; and I always thought that we needed to have a sound grasp of English Grammar prior to learning a second language In reality most people tend to learn grammar better through the study of another language He likens teaching English Grammar (to an English-speaking student) to teaching a child the mechanics of riding a bicycle when he already knows how to ride not worthwhile for riding the bicycle His second recommendation for teaching grammar to children would be to teach on a weak focal point as you notice grammatical errors in the childs written work For instance where the student missed capitalizing several Proper Nouns give them a lesson on Proper and Common Nouns Mr Pudewa also cautions children (humorously) on the dangers of grammar textbooks while asking them for a verb Most of us have learned that a verb is an action word; but it is really so much more; just check your dictionary for the full definition Consequently I am also kissing English Grammar Good-bye as far as teaching it to my younger sons Well be teaching IEW and Latin instead saving the English Grammar for later in their educationMy only regret is waiting so long to try this program with my eldest Grammar and writing have been a constant battleground with us Last year I was given a writing/grammar workbook that was recommended by another acquaintance with several years homeschooling experience beyond me; however the frustration it created was simply not worth that free pricetag! I like getting a great deal but you often get what you pay for Not that the other program was of bad quality a child who likes to write probably would have loved it; but I simply do not have one of those studious-seatwork-type of boys in this child Rather I have the fort building tree climbing bike jumper Can you really put a price on getting one of these guys to learn writing and grammar? And this one has worked for Mr Pudewas class for well over an hour a handful of timesWe were going to go for one of IEWs cheaper theme based units next but we have decided to continue with IEWs Continuation Course for now because of the amazing results we have received from the Student Writing Intensive; and Mr Pudewas engaging teaching method has been a great salve for our writing wounds My son is writing My son is writing My son is writing My son is writing

I really love this writing program In fact I just love the Institute for Excellence in Writing-Andrew Pudewa is great and he does a lovely job teaching the children on this set of DVD's He makes it fun and interesting and explains everything very clearly Once your child works through this set of DVD's he/she will have the basics of writing down and be ready to apply what they have learned to every subject In this way writing becomes part of all learning-not a separate subject We've been doing IEW for a while now with Teaching Writing Structure and Style and watching these videos has given my son just the boost he needs I heartily recommend this program to every parent who wants to give their child the gift of excellent writing skills
