A "novel" approach to reading, and introduction to the classics rolled into one. Each "Bring the Classics to Life" worktext contains a complete adaptation of the original work, written at appropriate reading level, a synopsis of the story, vocabulary lists, comprehension questions, vocabulary quizzes and answer key. Novels have been broken into ten short chapters. Prior to each chapter, new vocabulary words are defined and used in context. Comprehension questions include recall of specific details, sequence of events, drawing inferences from story context, critical thinking, selecting the main idea. Vocabulary exercises using the newly-learned words follow. 72 pgs. each, reproducible. Black and white (nice for coloring!) illustrations. There are 9-10 Classic Worktexts per grade level, with a complete set also available at each grade. A separate Shakespeare series is also available for grades 2 and up, with plays adapted in modern English (no "thees" or "thous") for easy reading.

The ePub CD-ROMs allow you to take the text portion of the workbook to your computer, MP3-player or e-reader. Each includes the complete book as a regular EPUB file, enhanced EPUB file (with audio), printable PDF file, and audio MP3 file. Please note that these CDs do NOT include the printable student activity pages from the workbooks.

The retellings of the classic books are also available in audio CD format. The comprehension questions and other features in the worktexts are not included, just the adapted story The audio recordings are fairly well done, with expertly paced narration and exciting sound effects. If used with a workbook, these could provide a nice audio component for listening comprehension. CDs are available for Level 1 and Level 2 books, but not Level 2 Shakespeare.

A Midsummer Night's Dream was our first exposure to both Shakespeare and Classic Worktexts - what a joy on both accounts I'm certain it was the language and approach created by the publisher that made it so (of course besides the genius of the Bard himself) I wanted a friendly exposure to Shakespeare for my elementary child without analysis just appreciation and I got that and more Broken down into manageable highly readable chapters with vocabulary words before a drawing of a critical scene (that helped keep the unusual names straight) comprehension questions that varied in depth and vocabulary exercises (which we mostly skipped) this was easy and fun to use with cries of "just one more chapter!" We did find the majority of vocabulary words to be quite simple and why we skipped the vocab exercises but there were a few that were needed Based on this worktext if you are using this for reading comprehension the grade level is accurate if you are using it for vocabulary I'd order a level or two above If you just want it for exposure to easy to read and understand Shakespeare probably any level would work I wish I had ordered a whole set for an even better value
