Bugs & Beetles Curriculum Bundle
Written by a biologist and educator, this STEM based nature study introduces children of all ages to the natural world! Beginning with the importance of understanding nature, the author explains how to use the curriculum and her teaching philosophy. Nature Journaling is explained, including a comparison of how the nature journal reflects the scientific method. Lesson plans soon follow. The lessons are flexible, but the author recommends one lesson per week, with each lesson taking 60-90 minutes. Following her recommended schedule, you will complete the program in one month. These lessons are complete in themselves, yet they can be used to inspire an extended study into the natural world!
Designed for guided inquiry-based learning, lessons begin with a “nature mystery” and overview of the lesson. Learning objectives, big ideas, and activities are also included. The author also provides a one-page science summary for parents and the answer to the nature mystery. Activities are divided into four groups: Adventurer-PreK (ages 3-5), Explorer-Elementary (ages 6-10), Naturalist-Middle School (ages 11-13) and Ecologist-High School (ages 14-18). Easy to follow instructions are included and follow a similar format: Before You Start with online video resources followed by the Activity, which includes the supply list and step-by-step activities. Supplies are common household items. Nature journaling sheets are included for the Explorer, Naturalist and Ecologist and are reproducible for families. Pre-K Adventurers join the older learners for the activities, but rather than a written nature journal, simple questions are given for oral discussion. Journal pages are reproducible for family use. Worth mentioning, there are a few links included in each lesson. The author published this from a pdf, so these only list titles (and not specific links). Titles are easily found on a web browser of your choice. Designed to meet the needs of families with children across a wide age-span, this guide provides a wonderful introduction to the natural world from a religiously neutral perspective. The spiral bound text features colorful images. 55 pages. ~Deanne
The Bugs & Beetles Book from Nature Matters Academy is designed to get kids outside and discovering the natural world right outside their doors. Kids will be having fun outdoors as they search for bugs and beetles in their own backyard.
This book includes 3 lessons that can be used in the spring, summer, or fall—anytime you see insects outside. Each lesson includes a nature mystery to be solved by the kids, learning objectives (for ages 3-18 so the whole family can participate!), activity instructions that will help your kids answer the nature mystery, instructional videos, and information on the science. Each lesson also includes a nature journaling page where your kids can reflect on what they've learned.
As you work through each lesson, be sure to encourage your kids to think past the insect itself by brainstorming ideas on how each insect provides important services for your ecosystem. In other words, why your kids should learn about them and care for them! If you have questions as you're working through the Bugs & Beetles Book, feel free to reach out to us.
