Category Description for Stepping Stones Thinking Skills:

Get your children on the path to critical thinking with these books. Each lesson has a series of pictures. The child's job is to think about the pictures and identify a pattern which will tell them what the next picture should be. For example, one lesson has a picture of an alligator, a balloon, a piece of candy, a dog and an elephant. The pattern in this exercise is the alphabetical sequence and the next picture should be of something beginning with f. The exercises make use of patterns with ending sounds, shapes, in and out, right and left, seasons, textures etc. One of the beauties of this series is that it will easily incorporate into your other curriculums. As you are teaching singular and plural noun forms to your children, you can pull out the critical thinking exercise which uses that concept in it's pattern from this book. The teacher's guide gives a general introduction, a rationale, objectives, hints for use, and answers. We recommend that you DO purchase a teacher's guide with each level. ~ Genevieve

To start my child from with beginning using critical thinking & developing the skills of logic. This program appears more kid friendly to K-2 grades than other options.

I would like to introduce logic and patterns to my son who is in K. He likes the geometric patterns from Saxon and is starting to recognize number patterns. This may be a nice addition if he likes it a couple times a week.

Stepping stones 1
I am glad I bought the teacher's manual together with the workbook. The thinking behind the patterns on this book is at times so simple that I can't solve them myself. As we go through the book I've learned to solve them the stepping stone way, but sometimes I'm not sure and I rely on the teachers manual to help me guide my child through the thinking behind the patterns if he can't figure them out by himself.

One single workbook could be used with multiple children. My son draws during journaling time and prefers not to draw again so he is happy to just tell me what he would draw in the next space. Thus, I'll be able to use it with his sister.

These patterns could be used with a range of ages. My son is 5, but I get the feeling it would have been better to use it in first grade. We may do it again next year to make sure we both "got it" before moving on to book 2.
