Description

The Get Set for School Numbers & Math Teacher’s Guide is brimming with wonderful, hands-on activities that every preschooler will love! Math and early childhood experts collaborated to design a program using song, movement, exploration, and play to help children develop their math “muscles” along with other readiness skills needed to succeed in kindergarten. The format is user friendly and beautifully organized with a colorful, double page spread for each lesson, including a visual representation of the activity, and clearly outlined information for guidance and extra support. The main skill being taught is highlighted and explained at the top of each lesson page above the activity illustration. At the bottom, additional math, sensory-motor, and social-emotional benchmarks are detailed, and a vocabulary section lists new math words to be introduced for that lesson. The second page of each lesson lists the materials needed and simple instruction steps for the activity, with scripted words for ease of use. Tips are given to check for student understanding and to help those with difficulty grasping the skill. A “More to Learn” section suggests additional activity ideas to enrich the lesson further. Each activity helps develop early math skills in one of these five domains: Numbers & Operations, Geometry, Patterns & Algebra, Measurement & Time, Data Representation & Probability. This guide uses the following Get Set for School multi-sensory products: Sing, Sound & Count with Me CD , Tag Bags, I Know My Numbers, 1-2-3 Touch & Flip Cards, 4 Squares More Squares, and Mix & Make Shapes. While these products are used within the lesson activities, they also have their own designated pages at the front of the guide, each with a picture, explanation, and page of “Discovery Play” ideas. It also lists easy and fun ways to use the products to foster understanding of important concepts during free-play time. Each lesson also has a strategy to support English language learners. Several methods for choosing activities are suggested in the guide, including what the students need, what fits the theme, or just what the children enjoy doing. However, a nice 36-week schedule is provided, using one activity per school day. At the back of the guide, a helpful list of illustrated children’s books for each of the five math domains gives teachers another fun way to expand upon the math concepts! This guide contains a wealth of information, and although written for classroom use, it works nicely for homeschoolers as well, with some slight modification. 197 pgs. pb. ~Nancie
