No, mom, it's not a bad thing. This kind of sword fighting involves memorizing Scripture, the "sword of the Spirit," to fight temptation. The book is really a devotional with a full year of material. Each week a new Bible verse is learned. The Bible verses are the response verses that children can use when faced with certain temptations; the temptation is listed below the Bible verse. (The book recommends making memory cards with the temptation on one side and the Bible verse on the other.) The child learns that when he faces this particular temptation, recalling this Bible verse will help him overcome the temptation. Each day during the week the student reads a segment of the Bible which relates to the memory verse, discusses the segment, and practices "sword fighting" by drawing memory cards either alone or in competition. To make it more fun, memory cards can be cut out in the shape of a sword. Devotions that really penetrate!

"Thy Word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee" We know that one very effective way of fighting sin in our lives is to have Scripture filed away in our minds to combat temptation when it pops up This book Sword Fighting is a great way to put Scripture in your kids' brains The book has a full year of daily devotions sorted week by week Each week the family memorizes a new verse to combat a particular temptation There are seven daily devotionals for each verse They include a passage of Scripture where the character dealt with that particular temptation Then there are comprehension questions regarding that day's Bible readingThe book sets it all out there for you Each week begins with "when you are tempted to (insert temptation here) remember (insert Bible verse here)" All sorts of temptations are covered from not praying being stubborn worrying being afraid lying etcIt is very simple to use The book recommends using the Day by Day Kid's Bible but my family uses whatever Bible is handy and we find no problem with that The memory verses are taken from various Bible translations and are pretty easy to remember Most of the time they are a portion of a verse so for older kids one might want to learn the entire verse for a greater challenge My 5 year old has no trouble learning the verses included The author recommends writing the temptations on one side of an index card and the Scripture on the other side Then one can keep up with which verses your family learned and review them regularly The author describes various games to refresh oneself on the Scriptures using the index cardsThis book has worked very well with my family even though we have a wide range of ages (ages 13-3) It takes less than 15 minutes most of the time It has really been a great aid to our family devotional time and I feel like my kids are taking away some useful knowledge every single night It was definitely worth the purchase price to me

An excellent family devotional! Memorize scriptures together and pull them out when temptations cross your path These daily studies are tied directly to scripture and they work well with a wide age range We printed the verses onto paper and laminated them so we could test each other every night
