Publisher Description:

Everyone can recognize the bright cardinal by its brilliant scarlet plumage, or the blue jay by its equally striking azure, black, and white coloration. But how many can quickly identify the bobwhite, the myrtle warbler, or the red-eyed vireo? Few of us, yet they are far from rare. Like most of the dozens of birds in this book, they may be easily and frequently spotted in or near cities and towns in most parts of the United States and Canada.
Become familiar with all of these common yet beautiful species through these 46 large, lifelike drawings. Accurately rendered by artist Lisa Bonforte, these birds will quickly impress themselves on your memory as you enjoy coloring their variegated plumage. Captions provide common and scientific names as well as seasons and ranges in which the birds occur. All 50 species are also illustrated in full color on the covers.
This book belongs to the Dover Pictorial Archive series, which means that graphic artists and designers will value these drawings as a convenient source of royalty-free art.

Category Description for Dover Science & Nature Coloring Books:

These high-quality, informative coloring books are just right for accompanying a unit study. Subjects are nicely detailed. Generally, illustrations on the inside covers depict the natural colors if you want to produce a realistic finished product. Very brief captions are nonetheless instructive. After coloring through a book, we're certain you'll be able to more easily identify specimens when you see them. Some books, like Rocks and Minerals, have several pages of worthwhile information in the front, including a discussion of different types of rocks and minerals, how to start collecting rocks, classifying rocks, and specific tests for identifying them. The My Horse coloring book has an introductory four pages on horse anatomy and features, then contains generous captions that form a mini-course in identifying, classifying, riding, and caring for horses. Our favorite medium is colored pencil. Since we offer a selection of quality colored pencils, we thought we'd lay in a generous supply of our favorite educational coloring books as well!

Boost™ editions, subtitled "seriously fun learning," are aligned to the Common Core with specific standards noted at the bottom of each page. A free teacher's manual can be downloaded from the Dover website.

good for learning bird identification
I was really pleased with this book. The pictures are quite lovely and aren't so elaborate that it takes over-long to color the whole thing. The drawings are realistic rather than simplified or even cartoonish as in some coloring books.

Best feature: all the birds are shown in their actual colors on the last page of the book which is a fold out page of very sturdy, shiny cardstock so it will stand up to handling as it gets referred to over and over for coloring.
