Publisher Description:
Junior Analytical Grammar: Mechanics has been written in response to frequent requests from our customers for instruction in punctuation, capitalization, and usage designed for children younger than those who are in the third “season” of Analytical Grammar. Many punctuation rules are based on a knowledge of advanced grammar, such as is covered in the second “season” of Analytical Grammar; however, we have pulled together those punctuation, capitalization, and usage rules which students with a thorough understanding of basic grammar can comprehend.
Junior Analytical Grammar: Mechanics consists of 15 week-long units and is recommended for students who have completed either Junior Analytical Grammar or the equivalent.
Our junior versions are a gentle, easy introduction to the concepts of English grammar, punctuation, and usage. They are straightforward to teach and fun for both teacher and student.
This introduction to English grammar parallels some of the units of instruction found in Analytical Grammar, but it utilizes a less complicated level of sentence construction (the reading level is about 2nd/3rd grade). The 11 units of JAG cover the same topics as the first season (year) of AG, while the 15 units of JAG: Mechanics cover some of the same punctuation covered in the third season (year) of AG. It's assumed that JAG students will have had the basics of sentence end punctuation and first word capitalization. Units are covered in a week of lessons that includes instructional information, three sets of exercises, and a test (no Skills Support at this level). As with Analytical Grammar, teacher-student interaction is expected, all work is completed "Open Notes", and correction is a teacher-student activity. Students are expected to both parse and diagram sentences. The Teacher Book includes a brief overview of the program along with a suggested daily lesson plan, all instructional information, and exercise worksheets with completed answers. Answers are detailed, with diagramming included. The Teacher Book is necessary to the program, both to understand and implement the course as designed and for the extensive answer keys. Jr. AG - like AG - is an open-and-go program. The Student Book includes all instructional information, exercise worksheets, and tests. The Junior Analytical Grammar DVDs and the Junior Analytical Grammar: Mechanics DVDs (each are 2 DVD sets) provide video lesson instructions that can be used by the student or by the teacher and student together. Both Teacher and Student Books are spiral-bound and around 150 pages. ~ Janice
It's robust without being overwhelming. It's thorough, comprehensive, and doable. Analytical Grammar's author, Robin Finley, had said that she was a woman on a mission - "to convince parents that they don't need to be doing a grammar worksheet every day all year long, for years and years!" Prepare to be convinced.
There is a Jr. Analytical Grammar program for grades 4-5 and the Analytical Grammar program is designed for grades 6 and up. There is also a High School Reinforcement program for grades 8 or 9 through 12. Read more details on each of the programs by clicking on the category on the left.
These materials offer a complete and comprehensive coverage of all three elements - grammar (i.e. parts of speech, complete sentences), usage (i.e. homophones, figures of speech, proper word choice to convey meaning), and mechanics (i.e. punctuation, capitalization).
