Category Description for Jr. Analytical Grammar (4th-5th Grades):

This introduction to English grammar parallels some of the units of instruction found in Analytical Grammar, but it utilizes a less complicated level of sentence construction (the reading level is about 2nd/3rd grade). The 11 units of JAG cover the same topics as the first season (year) of AG, while the 15 units of JAG: Mechanics cover some of the same punctuation covered in the third season (year) of AG. It's assumed that JAG students will have had the basics of sentence end punctuation and first word capitalization. Units are covered in a week of lessons that includes instructional information, three sets of exercises, and a test (no Skills Support at this level). As with Analytical Grammar, teacher-student interaction is expected, all work is completed "Open Notes", and correction is a teacher-student activity. Students are expected to both parse and diagram sentences. The Teacher Book includes a brief overview of the program along with a suggested daily lesson plan, all instructional information, and exercise worksheets with completed answers. Answers are detailed, with diagramming included. The Teacher Book is necessary to the program, both to understand and implement the course as designed and for the extensive answer keys. Jr. AG - like AG - is an open-and-go program. The Student Book includes all instructional information, exercise worksheets, and tests. The Junior Analytical Grammar DVDs and the Junior Analytical Grammar: Mechanics DVDs (each are 2 DVD sets) provide video lesson instructions that can be used by the student or by the teacher and student together. Both Teacher and Student Books are spiral-bound and around 150 pages. ~ Janice

Category Description for Analytical Grammar:

It's robust without being overwhelming. It's thorough, comprehensive, and doable. Analytical Grammar's author, Robin Finley, had said that she was a woman on a mission - "to convince parents that they don't need to be doing a grammar worksheet every day all year long, for years and years!" Prepare to be convinced.

There is a Jr. Analytical Grammar program for grades 4-5 and the Analytical Grammar program is designed for grades 6 and up. There is also a High School Reinforcement program for grades 8 or 9 through 12. Read more details on each of the programs by clicking on the category on the left.

Category Description for Combined Grammar, Usage, Mechanics:

These materials offer a complete and comprehensive coverage of all three elements - grammar (i.e. parts of speech, complete sentences), usage (i.e. homophones, figures of speech, proper word choice to convey meaning), and mechanics (i.e. punctuation, capitalization).

It's part of my 4th grade son's Alveary Curriculum with the Charlotte Mason Institute. It looks like a simple, logical, straight-forward approach to grammar.

I have read many outstanding reviews on this grammar curriculum. I need something very black and white for my oldest son who is soon to be 10 and this seems to be a good answer. We shall see!

I am using this program at home and my 5th grader also attends Classical Conversations Essential program once a week. I am a tutor in a challenge class, so I am not able to sit with him in Essentials. I find this program covers the same/similar material and is easier for me to administer at home. It helps that I know the CC Essentials terminology so as we go through this book I can make connections for him. I am super pleased with Analytical Grammar!

I haven't seen or used this personally but after a lot of research, I made the decision to try this series as it seems to provide a systematic approach to grammar, which I feel my son will respond to.

I am using Analytical Grammar with an older child and the lessons are great. They're thorough, not repetative, and don't require extra preparation, or additional books.

So far I think it's good. Simple, which is indispensable for me. My only minor complaint is that the teacher's manual and student workbook have a few discrepancies, looks like maybe they edited some things and didn't apply the edits to both books. No big deal, just annoying when you're reading out loud with your student.

Great Program
I have been using this with a fifth and 3rd grader. This program makes parts of speech very understandable and makes sure the kids have grasped it before moving on.

Simple yet Very Detailed
I am really liking this curriculum. It makes recognizing parts of speech very easy. And it includes short writing assignments at the end of each lesson which challenge the child to use as many words from a list as possible (and still make sense). I am pleased with the simplicity of the curriculum and my kids are learning grammar!

great program
My son who's in 4th grade uses this program and he's really enjoying learning the different grammar aspects within sentences: Prepositions, action verbs, adjectives, nouns, pronouns, adverbs, articles, modifiers, object of the preposition, subject, patterns, playing with words, indirect object, direct object, linking verbs, predicate nominative, predicate adjective, helping verbs, conjunctions & compound situations, etc. Everything builds on each other as you go through the lessons. If you're child already has a firm foundations of what I just discussed already then purchase the next book up called Junior Analytical Grammar Mechanics.

I'm using this workbook for my 4th grade daughter this year The way each chapter builds on the next is really wonderful She can't forget from one chapter to the next what she has already learned because there is constant reinforcement I questioned something the author wrote in the chapter on pronouns (I'm sorry I can't remember now what it was) and emailed her Her response is that she is giving them what they can understand at this age and not to sweat it all will be revealed in AG Now that I understand that I'm just going with the flow knowing that any intricacies will be covered later on I can't recommend this program highly enough We are already diagramming sentences (something I never did in school so it was new to me) and my DD is not having any trouble at all Any problems identifying certain parts of grammar get ironed out as we progress
