Category Description for Analytical Grammar:

It's robust without being overwhelming. It's thorough, comprehensive, and doable. Analytical Grammar's author, Robin Finley, had said that she was a woman on a mission - "to convince parents that they don't need to be doing a grammar worksheet every day all year long, for years and years!" Prepare to be convinced.

There is a Jr. Analytical Grammar program for grades 4-5 and the Analytical Grammar program is designed for grades 6 and up. There is also a High School Reinforcement program for grades 8 or 9 through 12. Read more details on each of the programs by clicking on the category on the left.

Category Description for Analytical Grammar (6th Grade and Up):

Its robust without being overwhelming. Its thorough, comprehensive, and doable. After getting a good look at this program, I understand completely why weve received so many customer requests. Analytical Grammars author, Robin Finley, says she is a woman on a mission "to convince parents that they dont need to be doing a grammar worksheet every day all year long, for years and years!" Prepare to be convinced.

One might view the Teacher and Student books that make up the AG set as intimidating, I suppose, and never "look under the hood." That would be a mistake. First of all, these books represent three years of grammar instruction. Secondly, they contain just what you need to cover English grammar in a structural and understandable way, giving the student enough practice without being endlessly repetitive. Thirdly, the residual of this program (the students workbook stripped of its exercises and tests) becomes a grammar reference book that the student is encouraged to use through remaining years of grammar accountability (i.e. high school composition).

The premise of this program is straight-forward and presented simply on about three pages of notes at the beginning of the Teacher Book. Assuming the start of this program in 6th grade, in the first year the parent teaches the first 10 units (about 20 minutes a day for 10 weeks) and follows up with a one-day-every-two-week review/reinforcement exercise (from Reinforcement and Review). Yes, you read that correctly, were talking about 10 weeks plus 18 days of grammar lessons for the year. These units cover parts of speech and sentence patterns. The second year, one week is spent on review followed by Units 11-17 and a once-a-month review/reinforcement (8 weeks plus 9 days total). Phrases and clauses are covered this year. In the third year punctuation is taught (Units 18-34). "Graduation" from this program means that the student now uses their Grammar Reference Book (a.k.a. stripped down Student Book) and is held accountable for proper usage. Make no mistake: the coverage of this program is detailed and comprehensive, requiring both sentence parsing (identification of parts of speech, etc.) and diagramming. However, the material is taught clearly, exercises are manageable and reinforced by the correction process the author requires, and learning is efficient. The author provides some clever graphic organizer types of "helps" The Process and The Verbals charts. Use of the basic program assumes teacher-student interaction for part of every lesson (students do some work independently); however, teacher prep is nil everything is provided for you. If you are starting this program at a grade other than 6th, the author gives suggestions for compacting it into one or two years. In fact, there is a lot of flexibility with the program. It could be used as a three-year middle/high school program, a two-year program for either jr. or sr. high school, or a one-year 8th grade or high school "crash course."

The Student Book includes all instructional information plus Exercises (three for each Unit), Skills Support, and Tests (one each per Unit). Exercises are collections of sentences that the student parses and diagrams. The Skills Supports are passages taken from songs, poetry, and literature that the student parses and paraphrases. (Pages are perforated for easy removal and placement into a binder.). An additional student will need his own Student Book. The Teacher Book has all the instructional information plus a few pages that outline each years approach giving a daily lesson plan. Detailed answers (with diagramming) are provided to all student exercises, skills support, and test pages. The Teacher Book is necessary to the program, both to understand and implement the course as designed and for the extensive answer keys. The Teacher/Student Set includes both books.

The Reinforcement & Review provides the suggested worksheets for the first two years. These are similar to the Skills Support lessons and include excerpts from classic literature that the student parses and then paraphrases. Answers are provided after each section. Ms. Finley believes strongly that correction is an important part of the learning process. She insists that the student be involved in all correcting, that only correct answers are marked, and that tests and worksheets are completed "Open Notes" using the resource material in the Student Book.

The Analytical Grammar DVDs (4 DVD set) provide a unit-by-unit presentation of the instructional information from the course. They are an optional item and could be used as either preparation for the teacher or as direct instruction for the student (preferably with the parent/teacher present). Examples of all exercises are worked and explained for the student. The DVDs are well-made and are easy to navigate through. I have to admit, however, that I was occasionally frustrated because I couldnt see what the instructor was writing as she was writing it. She always brought her hand back, though, so you could see the completed sentence. Please note that these do not take the place of the Teacher Book, but provided additional reinforcement.

This is a strong structure-of-language English grammar course that will prepare the student exceptionally well for high school and ultimately college composition. And it does so without being burdensome for either student or teacher. ~ Janice

Last year I used the Junior Analytical Grammar with 2 of my kids (6th & 9th grade) and thought it was the right level for their understanding and was doable with work load. I'm hoping this is the same!

I needed a rigorous, comprehensive curriculum that I could use with both my high schooler and my middle schooler at the same time. I was looking for something with good reviews and that incorporated diagramming and this fit the bill.

It had great reviews in multiple homeschool groups. It's one of Cathy Duffy's 102 top HS curriculums. My daughter likes a straightforward approach that doesn't repeat the same thing every year.

We are struggling with grammar. I watched the A.G. video about what makes it different from other programs, and it seemed to be a good choice for us. I also read reviews, and it was overwhelmingly positive.

I have scoured the internet looking for quality grammar programs and saw that this program comes highly recommended! I look forward to receiving and trying out Analytical Grammar with my Honors eighth grader!

We (teacher and homeschool students) have been overwhelmed and confused with english/grammar/language arts curriculum that is out there since we hit junior high and we have heard some wonderful things about this program being the opposite of all that! we can't wait to try it out!!

I am trying the curriculum out with my eighth grader and I selected it for its touted systematic approach to teaching grammar in two to three years, and that it should prepare my student for high school and college writing.

This is way to hard of a program for a 6th grader. Mine did fine the first year of it. But you could use this as a stand alone grammar for High Schoolers!!!! I would recommend using the Junior for 6th 7th or 8th then move on to using the regular Analytical Grammar if you so choose in High School for credit!!

I contacted the First Language Lessons publisher in hopes that there was a Level 5 in development for my oldest child. This was one of the programs that they let me know their customers often switch two after Level 4. I won't know for sure until I see it, but it sounds like a similar program and will provide us with the grammar they need through High School.

I have heard really good reviews about this and like the idea of a fairly short, concentrated time of grammar study, rather than years and years.

I've been looking for a follow-up to First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind, Level 4. So many were just too easy (and therefore boring) for my daughter after the great foundation in Jessie Wise's books. I chose this one based on the description. We've been using it, and we're very, very pleased with it.

I have heard great things about this program. It seems thorough yet succinct. It emphasizes diagramming, which I like also.

I chose analytical grammar in part because of the recommendation of another homeschooling mom who uses the program. I like the short duration of the program each year. I have an active 12 yr old son whose attention wanders easily and we have both been frustrated with our previous grammar programs.

Can I just buy the Teacher's Guide separately since I am teaching it at a co-op and don't need the students book?
A shopper on Mar 28, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Not from us, unfortunately. It's possibly you may be able to purchase it directly from the publisher.
Are we able to purchase multiple copies of the student book for classroom use?
A shopper on Mar 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I have multiple children who are using or have used this book. I've only purchased one set of the teacher/workbook combo, and then after that I just purchase the workbook. So yes, you can purchase multiple copies for classroom use--just select the "workbook only."
Is this a good choice for independent learners? I am looking for something my daughter can do on her own.

BEST ANSWER: Yes! My son used this his sophomore year in high school (last year) and he did it totally alone. He watched the lesson on DVD every Monday, and completed all the assignments for that lesson during the week. The only thing I had to do was to correct the workbook assignments. I would highly recommend getting the DVDs, though, if you want independent learning. My son also really learned a lot from this course. We were very pleased. Expensive but worth every penny in my opinion!

I love this program! We decided to take three years to go through it using the reinforcement lessons I think it is important to note that the cost of this program is potentially spread out over three years if you follow that planThis is an intensive grammar program that does require a good deal of parental involvement and oversight -- I sat down with my child reading through the lesson and doing a few practice sentences with her Grammar has always been a weak point of mine so I did the diagramming myself which helped me to teach my daughter Other than that I did not always look over a lesson prior to teaching it but learned it right there with my childMy daughter has become very adept at diagramming sentences and even commented that she found herself unconsciously parsing and diagramming other sentences she encountered Another nice feature of the program is the inclusion of literary passages for the purpose of parsing and also paraphrasing The sentences used in the exercises are about historical figures and events; they are not dry boring sentences created only for grammar exercisesNow that my daughter in eighth grade we are able to apply what she has learned in grammar to her writing We have a common language to refer to sentence structure and parts of speechThe review pages are essential to maintain the skills learned during the lessons -- worth the investment (again remember that the cost of the material is not just for one year) I followed Robin's advice and made tests open book -- this truly has made the notebook a reference book for my daughter We are just starting the third season (punctuation) this year; I will start season one with my next child Robin also has suggestions for pacing the lessons; these were very helpful We often took longer than a week to cover a lesson -- some sections were just harder to grasp Overall a very thorough program that will provide your child with a grammar reference they can use for life!
