Product Description:

This is the junior version of the Wordsmith program. Grades 4-6 are an ideal time to teach your kids the "tools" of writing. Of course, at that age, if it isn't fun, kids don't want to learn. Wordsmith does a great job of introducing vital writing skills in a fun and enthusiastic way. Throughout this workbook, students pretend to be writers for the local newspaper. Fun comics are interspersed throughout the book to "instruct" your child on the concept they are learning. The lessons will cover sentence review, paragraph writing, reporting, creative writing, and expressing opinions. These skills are covered in three different sections of the book. Part one introduces nouns, verbs, and basic sentence structure to your children. Some of the projects in this section have your child write an invitation, a thank you note, haiku poetry, and four-sentence captions - just to name a few. Part two focuses on modifiers and more complex sentences. Here your child will create some advertising, work on editing, and write a book review. Part three moves on to organizing sentences in a logical fashion and reporting skills. Some of the projects your child will do include writing sports stories, giving household hints, composing a news article, and creating a comics column. Detailed instructions are given at the beginning of every project to help them complete it independently. Answers are printed in the back to help you correct their work. This spiral-bound workbook has black-and-white text and illustrations. 85 pgs, pb.

Category Description for Wordsmith Series:

Written by a homeschooling mom, the presentation of topics and skills in this book is outstanding! Instructions are directed to the student and interesting assignments encourage even reluctant writers. Lessons build from focusing on interesting word usage to sentence construction, to scene-setting, characterization, and well-written dialogue, and culminate in the writing of a short story at the end. Students can complete the course in about a year, but you might want to alternate lessons with grammar instruction, other technical skills instruction, or other types of writing and "stretch out" the use of Wordsmith over a longer time period. The book allows ample room to write exercises in, but students can also use regular paper so that you can re-use with several children. This book has also been revised, and the new edition features additional exercises and examples, an expanded section on writing short stories, additional explanation and examples of revision, and review/practice quizzes. An inexpensive teacher's guide is available for parents who want the extra help in teaching creative writing and includes answers, lesson plans, teaching suggestions, and ideas for expanding the lessons. This guide has also been revised, and includes more explanation of the "philosophy" of writing, further tips on revising, and more ideas for additional writing assignments.

Category Description for Other Writing Programs:

These materials contain both instruction and writing assignments but are not as broad in scope (types of writing) as the comprehensive programs.

The writing curriculum we started in the fall was very ambitious, and a medical emergency made us lose some school time. We decided to shelve the big one and try it again next year, and in the meanwhile this looks like an engaging program to keep building skills. Recommended by The Well-Trained Mind.

Excellent Writing Curriculum
My 5th grader has, for years, been reluctant to use her writing talents in her schoolwork. This curriculum has completely changed that. She approaches her assignments now with enthusiasm, and the lessons within have made a clear difference in her writing skills.

Great for reluctant writers!
I have two boys -- one is a reluctant writer, and the other is not. They both love this writing curriculum (finally I found one!) -- because the writing assignments are interesting and manageable.

Highly motivating for reluctant writers!
I chose this after speaking extensively with Deanne about my 8-11 year old boys' reluctance to write. She recommended this curriculum and it has not disappointed at all. These boys actually look forward to writing, which is far more than I had hoped for. This program makes writing so enjoyable for them. I highly recommend this program as a great introduction to writing.

Creative, fun, and simple
What I was hoping for~ a simple introduction to writing for my non-writer! He really hates anything that has to do with writing, but he's really enjoying this book. Creative, varied lessons that have stimulated his creativity. I counted about 100 lessons (they aren't numbered) so it should be easy to finish in a year, but I really don't mind it if takes two years if slowing down helps him to take his time and do it well.

Fantastic book for teaching writing and reinforcing language arts skills
Despite it's retro look (which may baffle students who don't remember the days of hand-typed and mimeographed worksheets), this is one of the best workbooks I've come across. My daughter looks forward to doing the exercises, and the workbook has complemented the language arts lessons in another workbook. I already see an improvement in her writing. Plus, it's really fun. Definitely a must-have for an English curriculum.

Great for struggling writers!
I found Wordsmith Apprentice recommended by another homeschooling mom whose son struggles with dysgraphia. My daughter seems to have some of the same struggles, so I thought we'd give it a try this school year. We haven't gotten very far into it yet, but my daughter is loving it. She particularly struggled with coming up with ideas on what to write and this helps with that. It's a fun format and she seems to look forward to doing her writing assignments now!

We enjoyed Wordsmith Apprentice this past year The lessons were interesting fun and written directly to the student Many days my child asked to go further in the book than was planned for the day She enjoyed the "writing for a newspaper" theme She also enjoyed the creative parts of the book such as the assignment to write and design ads Great curriculum!Great value for the money We look forward to using Wordsmith and Wordsmith Craftsman in the future!
