We have used Saxon Math since kindergarten. I have slightly tweaked it to how my daughter learns, so it works well for her. I plan to use it through Calculus. I choose the older editions because I believe they are more thorough, not bending to the will of Common Core, and in line with the original philosophy behind Saxon Math.

This is the next level- my daughter will be starting Algebra 2 in December. This is the 4th year we are using it. We switched to Saxon after using Right Start Math and finishing all the levels. It took some time to get used to the different format but we love it! My daughter, who dislikes math, admits that, while she still doesn't "like" math, the program had made her a stronger math student and she doesn't mind the work because she knows she is learning the concepts well.

I've heard only good things about Saxon. Saxon is very thorough. The only complaint I've ever heard is that there are too many problems for students. Of course, if a student does not need so many problems once he has learned the concept, go on with the next lesson!

BEST ANSWER: You are correct: NO solutions manual in this set. There is a set that has these three PLUS the solutions manual. The solutions manual is very helpful for families that need the problems spelled out step by step. Or, if you already have this set, the solutions manual is also sold separately.

Do you need a calculator with this? If so, which one?

BEST ANSWER: There were some lessons where a calculator was needed for things like trig functions and logarithms. While we opted for a graphing calculator, TI-84, with the expectation of higher math classes in the future, my son says he doesn’t recall using the graphing function for Algebra 2 and that a regular scientific calculator should work. However, he did say being able to use it for the complex fractions and such was very convenient.
Do the questions have the chapter number associated with each question listed as it is done in the Algebra 1 third Edition?

BEST ANSWER: Yes, each problem has a small number in parenthesis right after it, which indicates the lesson where the concept was originally presented. That being said, I heartily recommend the DIVE DVDs if your student will be doing this book on their own. We have gone through this book twice now, the first time without the DVDs, and I wish we had purchased them the first time around!

Does the solutions manual have the step by step answers for the problems?

BEST ANSWER: Yes, the Solutions Manual has step by step answers to every problem in the text, while the Answer Key has only final answers. Unless you're a mathematician yourself, I would highly recommend the solutions manual. Some problems can be challenging, and if you don't want to have to work through the whole text yourself, being able to see the steps is the best way to help your child when they're struggling.

BEST ANSWER: Good question...and one I've asked a number of people myself. I understand that Saxon has always included geometry within their algebra 1, algebra 2, and advanced math curriculum. Only recently did they create a designated geometry book, and to meet the demand for such. According to a friend who has taught math for 20+ years, several of those years using Saxon's high school curriculum, the geometry book is redundant and unnecessary for students who have taken Saxon's algebra 1, algebra 2, and advanced math, as geometry is covered comprehensively in these three books. That said, if you need a fourth year of math and don't want to dive into calculus, a designated geometry class might be a good option. Other options would be statistics, personal finance, or any number of online classes offered by the Federal Reserve. Hope this helps!

BEST ANSWER: The textbook itself is a very good quality hard back book. The other two booklets are thin and will need care to last. Having said that, we have 15 students using this book set, so it works fine!
How many lessons are in this book, Saxon Algebra 2 3rd edition?

BEST ANSWER: There are 129 lessons, which breaks down roughly to 4 lesson per week and a test. Adhering to that schedule gives you a 30 week math course which goes from Sept. to the middle of May. It's rigid, but I find my son does much better with the deadlines imposed. It keeps him on track. I like Saxon because review is built into every lesson, which prevents him from losing the previous concepts learned. The format is very logical, and gives the schedule for when tests should be taken. I figure 1 1/2 hours per day on Math, except the test day. Hope this helps.

I absolutely love the way this book is designed. Lessons well laid out in small, easily understood pieces. Consistent practise of lessons throughout ensures techniques become well learned and established in your mind. Testing materials provided with a schedule. I was not familiar with "spiral learning" before but was following that technique and am convinced it is the best way to learn and build your knowledge.

answer book doesn't "show the work"
The books are great - we love Saxon. However, this answer book doesn't show how they got the correct answer - which we are definitely missing!! That feature was very helpful in the Algebra 1 and I wish we had it in this one as well.

I am not only teaching my children math I am studying math myself to prepare to add math as a second teaching field So I have looked at a lot of different math books Saxon does an excellent job of explaining mathematical concepts Their explanations are in English not mired in difficult mathematical terminologyNevertheless be sure to get the solution manual! You need the answer to every problem and sometimes you need to see how they got that answer The textbook is so thick because it has more explanations and illustrations than other texts I always wondered how to teach stated problems You explain the problem to the student and he understands it but still can't do the next stated problem Saxon teaches the student step by step how to solve various kinds of stated problems For example they teach you how to solve boat in the river problems and give helpful hints like telling you to put all the information in a box Each lesson for a while you have another boat in the river problem Then comes the lesson when they teach you how to solve harder boat in the river problems They also teach you how to solve abstract equations You end up with answers like RT=12 At the time you wonder what purpose this has but later you solve stated problems which put this knowledge to use Saxon thus leads you step by step to solve complex stated problems Some concepts such as ideal gas laws and chemical mixture problems are taught much better here than in our chemistry book In chemistry you also have to convert units and check your units to make sure you correctly solved the problem Saxon has been teaching unit conversion in previous books and continues here This book also covers force vectors and does a much better job than our physics book I think this course prepares you well for the types of problems you encounter on the SAT too My only complaint would be that there are not enough problems on the new topic that is introduced each lesson My answer to that is to work all the examples in the current lesson and to go ahead a few lessons to work similar problems in the next several lessons (Like all the boat in the river problems for the next 3 lessons) Saxon also teaches the wise use of the calculator not for every problem but for pi logarithms sine and cosine etc I think it is a great value and have personally not found anything objectionable in the book

We have used Saxon Math since 6th grade The girls have enjoyed it from the get-go! In the past 2 years we added the DIVE (Digital Interactive Video Education) to the grade kit and have benefited greatly from the whole Saxon Math Curriculum
