Category Description for Miquon Math Grade 1:

Math is not just numbers! Using Cuisenaire rods, Miquon Math Labs allows children to model numbers and operations concretely. It uses a hands-on, pattern-building, discovery method that fosters independence and creativity in problem solving. The unique format of the program allows for flexibility - use each book straight through, or teach topically. It introduces children to all four basic math operations in grade one - plus fractions, clock arithmetic, area, volume and factoring - building confidence in children and taking the "mystery" out of these otherwise-delayed topics. By third grade, children understand different base systems and graph algebraic equations! These are not typical workbooks that test what a child already has learned, but lab sheets - teaching pages. Children are shown that, while there is only one correct solution, there are different ways to arrive at it, and it encourages them to develop their own techniques. The "standard" approach is not always the best. For example, which is easier: 400 - 298 or 398 - 298 + 2 or 400 - 300 + 2? Techniques like these really help when caught without pencil or paper! After using Miquon with four children, we can attest that this program has promoted flexibility in problem solving - using the right technique for the situation. Ours now tackle new or difficult problems creatively, even fearlessly!

I would also recommend purchase of the Annotations. A teacher's guide for all six workbooks, it contains a general overview and several suggestions on how to present each major concept. It also provides preliminary activities for a concrete understanding of the math concepts as well as more detailed explanations for many of the lab sheets. While answers are supplied for some of the more "tricky" sheets, most worksheets are shown sans answers, so take the time to fill in the answers as you correct work for your first "math labs" student - then you'll have a completed key to use with the next!

Category Description for Miquon Math Labs:

Math is not just numbers! Using Cuisenaire rods, Miquon Math Labs allows children to model numbers and operations concretely. It uses a hands-on, pattern-building, discovery method that fosters independence and creativity in problem solving. The unique page-numbering format of the program allows for flexibility - use each book straight through, covering a variety of topics, or use only the pages in each book relating to a specific topic (easily identified by the alpha-numeric page numbering system).

Instead of holding off on more difficult math topics until later grades, the Miquon approach is unique in teaching all four basic math operations in Grade 1 - plus fractions, clock arithmetic, area, volume and factoring. This builds confidence in children as they see how the basic operations are intterrelated and takes the "mystery" out of these otherwise-delayed topics. By Grade 3, children understand different base systems and graph algebraic equations!

These are not typical workbooks that test what a child already has learned, but lab sheets - teaching pages. Children are shown that, while there is only one correct solution, there are different ways to arrive at it, and it encourages them to develop their own techniques. The "standard" approach is not always the best. For example, which is easier, to teach borrowing and carrying for a problem like 400 - 298 or to teach the the child to restate the problem as 398 - 298 + 2 or 400 - 300 + 2? Techniques like these really help to develop mental dexterity in problme solving. After using Miquon with our seven children, we can attest that this program has promoted flexibility in problem solving and teaches them to find the best technique for the situation. Ours students now tackle new or difficult problems creatively, even fearlessly!

Altogether, the six student workbooks contain over 650 lab sheets. Concepts covered include: counting, odd-even, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, equalities, place value, number line and functions, factoring, squaring, simultaneous equations, graphing equations, geometric recognition, length, area, volume, series and progressions, grid and arrow games, mapping, clock arithmetic, sets, and word problems.

We recommend purchasing the Lab Sheet Annotations. This is the teacher's guide for all six workbooks. Because the approach taken in the program is so different, it explains the reasoning behind the presentation and provides several suggestions on how to present each topic. It also provides preliminary activities for a concrete understanding of the math concepts as well as more detailed explanations for many of the workbook pages. While answers are supplied for some of the more "tricky" sheets, most worksheets are shown sans answers, so take the time to fill in the answers as you correct work for your first Miquon student - then you'll have a completed key to use with the next!

The Miquon Math program would be an excellent start in math to move into any other program, but it would lend itself particularly well to those intending to use the Singapore approach to math in the future.

I have a student who is struggling to conceptualize numbers using the math curriculum we currently use. When I was a child my mother used Miquon for me and my siblings, so I'm going to try and see if it will help my child!

I am teaching math rescue to older kids. They have not learned with the traditional school methods of teaching and need a fresh approach. Miquon Math adds colour/number identity on top of the unit/rod approach. Miquon also takes unit/rod beyond simply the base ten counting system. My daughter was dyslexic and she had great success with Miquon.

Miquon is another out of the box type of Math that I have not only used with my own children at home when they were young, but now use as a remedial tool to help young children struggling with math concepts as I tutor. My children were able to jump into Saxon math, 56 when completing all of the books in this series.

My child is about to start 1st grade and these are the math books my mom used with me as a kid this age-25 years ago. She homeschooled 5 kids over 23 years and loves miquon for the younger grades.

All of my kids have used this book and now that I am tutoring older kids that are way behind in math I am finding these books to be wonderful. They worked great when my own 5 year olds used them, but they are also working great for the 15yo that I am now using them with. Not at all babyish, and enough challenge for even older kids (who need the review).

Is this suitable for a Charlotte mason approach tomhomeschool?
Debbie on Sep 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I am only mildly familiar with charlotte mason - this book is a worksheet book, but the worksheets are very discovery oriented, as opposed to rote memorization. I recommend miquan for those who want to see beauty and patterns in math, and not just get good at it
What level to start?
A shopper on Aug 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I've always started with the orange book in first grade. It's designed to use 2 books a year, so first graders get the orange and red books, second grade is blue and green, and third grade finishes up with yellow and purple. I've used them with all 8 of my children and they work great. I also use Cuisenaire rods as manipulatives along with the books.

We love Miquon math
I love this math curriculum. My six-year-old is using it well and my four-year-old is using it for certain lessons. It is very well planned out and there are so many resources if you choose to order them. It does take some planning and understanding of the math Process, but if you have a week or so, to put in some reading and planning before you start, it's totally worth it and a great curriculum!

Inexpensive but excellent! Old school and requires hands on instruction.
To preface, I grew up using Miquon. It prepared me very well in understanding math concepts. I transitioned easily into Saxon math 5/4 and was never intimidated by algebra or higher math (until calc 3 in college).

It is a great, cheap, resource for grades 1 - 3. The curriculum developer believed that young children could understand higher math concepts. I personally love this because it makes math much less intimidating later on.

Miquon is very old and looks dated. My son doesn't seem to care though. He is a young first grader. This book requires me to be in the same room with him and sit with him maybe 50% of the time depending on the page. Your child will need to know how to write numbers and do some basic counting. It's also a little messy. At least, my son is. The manipulative cuisenaire rods tend to go everywhere but I make him pick them up.

In addition to the workbooks, you will need to purchase cuisenaire rods. I also recommend you purchase the lab sheet annotations book. The annotations book is good for the entire set and includes simple explanations on how to approach each workbook page.

I would (and have) recommended this starter math book and the entire series. I used them with all my children. Now they're grown and have kids of their own.

I recently purchased the Orange Book for my 4-year-old granddaughter. She loves it as much as her mom did.

My son very much likes the hands-on aspect of this program, making it a joy to do. The book does, however, introduce multiplication very early and not very clearly (based on what is in the Orange Book and the Lab Sheet Annotations I am not sure how you are supposed to introduce it). The books do offer, however, an easy way to change the order in which you introduce concepts (the pages are organized by category across all of the books), so we will likely use the books that way and complete all of addition and subtraction before moving on to multiplication.

Great product
I changed to Miquin for my 1st grader when I saw how dependent he had become on counting to figure out addition problems. He is quick and has a good understanding of addition and subtraction, but I wanted a different way of teaching beginning concepts. I skipped most of the first unit (counting) and started in the easy addition to introduce the math blocks.
He has progressed well and is understanding adding more conceptually now. Miquon worksheets can be a bit confusing, but I have read the 1st grade diary in the past and refer to the lab sheet annotations if I get confused. Easy to implement-no teacher prep-I am confident in my math teaching abilities, so I don't want a hand holding type program. I will use this for now or switch back to Singapore as his needs change.
