The Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C student workbooks provides pre-literacy instruction and reinforcing exercises with a focus on visual identification of consonants, their written lowercase letter forms and their sound-symbol relationships. Each lesson addresses the principles of effective reading instruction and follows the same easy-to-use format. The Teachers Guide is required for providing listening exercises.

The Teachers Guide for Workbooks A, B and C expands on the skills presented in these books, providing teachers with various options for instruction and reinforcement. The wide variety of activities may be adapted for whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one learning situations.

The 60 Picture-Letter Cards can be used for supplementary visual and auditory work and match key words in the student workbooks. Letter cards allow students to practice letter identification and recognition. Picture-letter combination cards help students map sounds to symbols. Use with Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C workbooks.

The Workbooks, Explode The Code Books 1-8 focus on Phonemic Awareness, Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension, and Writing. All workbooks have several review lessons and a posttest. Explode The Code Half Books (1 -6 ) focus on more practice and reinforcement with skills in workbooks 1-6.

Code Cards (1 card for every concept introduced in Books 1-3.) include suggestions for daily practice activities and games. Each card is marked with the book and page number on the concept, which it is introduced.

Teachers Guides (Books 1-8) incorporate a quick review, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension in every lesson. Suggestions for writing practice and differentiated instruction are provided for each lesson. Specific answers to the student pages are not offered, as the book assumes student and teacher will be completing these together. However, answers for pre-test and post-test questions are included. Please also note these books only cover the "whole" levels, not the 1/2 levels.

Explode The Code Placement Tests are designed to assess students encoding and decoding skills. All tests can be given in either a group setting or individually, with the exception of Test 4, which must be administered individually. Included are directions for administering and analyzing results; answer keys and reproducible test forms.

Category Description for Explode the Code:

A phonics program, utilizing workbooks, covering letter sounds and most phonograms. Ample practice using a variety of exercises helps children to both learn and reinforce reading skills. These are particularly well-conceived, with alternate (incorrect) choices containing most probable letter or word confusions. This will assure well-honed phonetic reading skills. There is plenty of practice here, so if you use these in conjunction with another phonics program (for reinforcement), you will want to pick and choose exercises or pages to complete. The "1/2" level books provide practice for the skills learned in the whole-level books Please note that Get Ready for the Code, Get Set for the Code, and Go for the Code no longer include teacher's guide inserts. A much-enhanced teacher's guide is now available separately, that contains teaching information and answers for these three books. Teacher's guides are available for upper levels as well, with each teacher's guide covering two levels.

The new second edition features some small changes from the original, including revised student instructions, some updated content and artwork, and revised stories in Book 7 and 8. There is also a new chart on the inside front cover of the teacher guides which shows the overall lesson routine.

If my child has successfully completed “Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons,” will level 2 of “Explode the Code” be too easy? Should we start with level 3 or 4 instead?
K W on Aug 14, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I would expect Book 2 to be too easy. Explode the Code Books 1-8 cover the phonics skills that are typically covered in K-2 phonics courses. I would expect your student to be ready for Books 5 or 6 after finishing Teach Your Child - 100 Easy Lessons. However, I'll post here the skills covered in each book and you can decide what would be the best fit.

Book 1 Consonant pretest; short vowels.
Book 2 Initial and final consonant blends.
Book 3 Open syllables, silent-e, digraphs (sh, th, wh, ch, -ng, -ck, -tch), simple diphthongs (ee, ea, ai, ay, oa, ow).
Book 4 Syllable division between consonants, with open and closed syllables, with syllables ending in -y and -le, diphthong syllables, and three-syllable words; compound words, endings (-ful, -ing, -est, -ed, -ness).
Book 5 Word families (all, alk, old, olt, oll, ild, ind), three-letter blends, qu, -ey, and the three sounds of -ed.
Book 6 More difficult diphthongs (oo, ea, ie, oi, oy, ou, ow, au, aw, igh, ew, ui, ue, ou), r-controlled vowels (including wor, war also).
Book 7 Soft c and g, silent letters, sounds of ear, ei, eigh, and the digraph ph.
Book 8 Suffixes and irregular endings.
does this actually teach? (as in, gives me guidance or help in HOW to teach the sounds?} or is this just practice?
A shopper on May 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The Explode the Code books provide a systematic presentation of phonics skills. They are presented sequentially and with some instruction. You will need to add reading practice for a complete phonics approach. The accompanying Teacher's Manuals will help you in teaching the concepts.

Love Love Love Explode The Code!
Explode the code is a great curriculum. Works very well for my child who has a short attention span. I love how it focuses on writing and spelling while teaching phonics. My children were able to spell and read fairly quickly after we started Explode the Code.

Great Reading Program
I've used this program for two children so far. One started with the preface to this series, Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for the Code, and the other jumped right in here. I use this book at Kindergarten level. The workbooks keep my children engaged daily in learning to read, building each week on what they have already learned. You can go at your own pace with these. I take one lesson and stretch it out over the course of a week. I purchased the teacher's manual because I prefer to be told what and how to teach, but you wouldn't necessarily need it at this level if you like to plan your own lessons.
