The Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C student workbooks provides pre-literacy instruction and reinforcing exercises with a focus on visual identification of consonants, their written lowercase letter forms and their sound-symbol relationships. Each lesson addresses the principles of effective reading instruction and follows the same easy-to-use format. The Teachers Guide is required for providing listening exercises.

The Teachers Guide for Workbooks A, B and C expands on the skills presented in these books, providing teachers with various options for instruction and reinforcement. The wide variety of activities may be adapted for whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one learning situations.

The 60 Picture-Letter Cards can be used for supplementary visual and auditory work and match key words in the student workbooks. Letter cards allow students to practice letter identification and recognition. Picture-letter combination cards help students map sounds to symbols. Use with Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C workbooks.

The Workbooks, Explode The Code Books 1-8 focus on Phonemic Awareness, Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension, and Writing. All workbooks have several review lessons and a posttest. Explode The Code Half Books (1 -6 ) focus on more practice and reinforcement with skills in workbooks 1-6.

Code Cards (1 card for every concept introduced in Books 1-3.) include suggestions for daily practice activities and games. Each card is marked with the book and page number on the concept, which it is introduced.

Teachers Guides (Books 1-8) incorporate a quick review, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension in every lesson. Suggestions for writing practice and differentiated instruction are provided for each lesson. Specific answers to the student pages are not offered, as the book assumes student and teacher will be completing these together. However, answers for pre-test and post-test questions are included. Please also note these books only cover the "whole" levels, not the 1/2 levels.

Explode The Code Placement Tests are designed to assess students encoding and decoding skills. All tests can be given in either a group setting or individually, with the exception of Test 4, which must be administered individually. Included are directions for administering and analyzing results; answer keys and reproducible test forms.

Category Description for Explode the Code:

A phonics program, utilizing workbooks, covering letter sounds and most phonograms. Ample practice using a variety of exercises helps children to both learn and reinforce reading skills. These are particularly well-conceived, with alternate (incorrect) choices containing most probable letter or word confusions. This will assure well-honed phonetic reading skills. There is plenty of practice here, so if you use these in conjunction with another phonics program (for reinforcement), you will want to pick and choose exercises or pages to complete. The "1/2" level books provide practice for the skills learned in the whole-level books Please note that Get Ready for the Code, Get Set for the Code, and Go for the Code no longer include teacher's guide inserts. A much-enhanced teacher's guide is now available separately, that contains teaching information and answers for these three books. Teacher's guides are available for upper levels as well, with each teacher's guide covering two levels.

The new second edition features some small changes from the original, including revised student instructions, some updated content and artwork, and revised stories in Book 7 and 8. There is also a new chart on the inside front cover of the teacher guides which shows the overall lesson routine.

Homeschooling for 20+ years. Explode the Code is a very straight-forward, effective reading program add-on. I taught my six children to read with Explode the Code and Phonics Pathways book and games. I recommend the A, B, C explode the code books as an entry point for a very beginning reader.

I selected Explode the Code for my homeschool families, who have students with severe, nonspeaking autism. The symbol-based phonics program works well for them and builds the foundational knowledge required for reading.

Reinforcing phonics skills from all about reading with 5 year old reader
Aubrey K on Aug 30, 2021
Explode the Code is a comprehensive, incremental phonics program. The pictures are humorous and fun for child and adult. It is well researched. My first graders changed from one L.A. curriculum to ETC last year and thrived. This year I am combining it with a spelling and writing program.

What spelling and vocabulary courses would work well with Explode the Code phonics series?
A shopper on Mar 24, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Sequential Spelling works well concurrently. And we use Wordly Wise for vocab but not until well after they’ve finished the Explode the Code series and are reading fluently - usually grade 4.
Is this a full year study or would I need a few workbooks to complete the year?
User on Jul 29, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Books 1 through 8 cover the basic phonics taught in grades K, 1, and 2. Typically you would use 2-3 books in K, 2-3 books in 1st, and 2+ books in 2nd.
Are the teacher guides for 1-8 really necessary or are the workbooks enough on their own?
User on Jan 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Unless you are very new to teaching phonics, I'd skip them. I got them and never even opened them, the workbooks are very self explanatory.

Excellent workbook that doesn't feel too much like a workbook!
My Kindergartener loves this workbook, and he normally hates workbooks. He feels like he is solving puzzles, and it's helping his confidence with reading as well - a very "write to read" approach that is lovely. Complements our phonics program beautifully.

Simple, affordable, effective!
I have spent too much on curriculum in the past. I started the Explode the Code system with a 7 year old boy who has some speech issues and hates handwriting. It has been perfect for him. We're flying through this workbook and I'll get the next once we're done. I pair this with the Reading Eggs app and he's doing really well with reading.

Ok, but hard to decipher drawings
I was gifted some Explode the code books, and continued to purchase for awhile.
My students and I had difficulty understanding some of the pictures (drawings). It is not my favorite curriculum.

Fun for my 6yo
My 1st grader enjoys it and can work through rather quickly. He’s still in the beginning portion and there has been a good bit of repetition which is helpful for him. My only complaint so far is that it teaches that the long a sound is used for the word “anchor”. That’s confusing to him and I have to correct it each time he reads it. Not sure how a mistake like that could go unnoticed.

Explode the Code is the way to go
I am a happy Explode the Code user for quite a few years. Simple, open and go.

The illustrations can be a little off-putting. They aren't glitzy, that's for sure.

My biggest caution is not to begin teaching a child to read too soon. No program is valuable if the child isn't ready. I have found once mine are ready, Explode the Code is a very non-stressful way to learn to read.
