Product Description:

Continuing the successful "detective" series from The Critical Thinking Company, the U.S. History Detective book can be used as a supplement to any history program, as a review course, or as a stand-alone text. The goal of this text is to encourage and develop critical thinking, analysis, and reading comprehension through the study of U.S. history. Book one covers the span from Colonial Times to the Reconstruction after the Civil War. Each lesson includes an informative text where each sentence is clearly numbered for easy reference. Colorful pictures, maps and timelines illustrate the text throughout. The question section in each lesson requires students to support their answers with specific references back to the text (hence the numbered sentences). This helps students get into the practice of providing supporting evidence for answers rather than relying simply on recall information. The various questions in each lesson will give students the opportunity to make inferences and draw conclusions based on their evaluation of the text, distinguish between fact and opinion, understand historical chronology, expand their vocabulary, link history with geography, and practice answering analytical essay questions. There are 65 lessons grouped into 9 sections. There are also more than 20 reviews throughout the book and answers to all lessons and reviews are included. This is a consumable book and permission is given to make copies for home or classroom use. Zach

Publisher Description:

U.S. History Detective® can be used as a stand-alone textbook, a resource of supplemental activities to enrich another textbook, or as a review course for older students. The vocabulary and content skills are based on common state social studies standards for Grade 8.

What makes U.S. History Detective® different from other American history books is the integration of critical thinking into the content lessons. The questions in this book require deeper analysis and frequently ask for supporting evidence from the lesson. This in-depth analysis produces greater understanding, which results in better grades and higher test scores. Over time, students who practice critical thinking learn to apply it throughout their education and lives. This book also develops reading comprehension and writing skills, and challenges students to learn new vocabulary.

U.S. History Detective® Book 1 focuses on American history from the time of the first European explorers interacting with Native Americans through the Reconstruction Era following the Civil War. This textbook has both primary and secondary source information. Each lesson provides a passage students must read, followed by a series of questions. Questions are multiple choice, short answer, or short essay questions. Students are frequently asked to identify sentence evidence from the lesson that best supports the answer. Sample answers are provided which identify key points for the essays. In addition there are section review activities and some bonus activities.

In this book, students will:

* Supply supporting evidence for many of their answers

* Supply essay evidence to support their conclusions by drawing on specific information from the lesson

* Draw inferences and conclusions based on their evaluation of the evidence

* Distinguish between facts and opinions

* Analyze historical chronology to see history as a series of interrelated events

* Acquire new vocabulary

* Learn to interpret and draw information from geographical maps, political cartoons, and charts

Because my son is dyslexic, I need books that are visually interesting and stick to the facts.

Son requested a workbook style program. Chose this because it looks to be a fairly straight forward (but thorough) review of US History. We will also be reading, "A Student’s Guide to US History" by Wilfred McClay, as well as a number of novels set within key historical events to round things out.

I hope that this will be more fun and less dry textbook. A little bit of a different take on a tradition textbook.

I want to instill critical thinking skills and not just names, dates, and places.

Suggestion from Ruth on chat line. My son failed his social study's class this year but he is not allowed online so I needed something that was more like a work book review of this past year to get him ready for next year.

Love the Detective books, great way to get kids to read between the lines and make sure you understand what you have read. Plus getting a little history as you go!

I lost the answer key for book 1 of US History Detective.. how can I get a replacement answer key?
Kristen L on Mar 2, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The answer key for this book is now included at the back of the book. There is no way (from us) to replace it short of purchasing another book. You might contact the publisher - Critical Thinking Press. They might be able to help you out.
Is there teachers guide?
A shopper on Jan 23, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No, there is not a teacher's guide, only an answer key in the back. However, this has not been problem. The questions are pretty straight forward and are always found in the text (every answer is associated with a sentence for reference which I believe makes my kids pay more attention to what they are reading since they know they will have to site their answer). Occasionally, my kids choose a different sentence than what is given in the key. If their chosen sentence makes sense and they can argue their case effectively, then I give them credit for it. This is a very nice book for an overview of the time period. It does not go in depth for any one particular time or event, so if you are looking something more intense this isn't it. However, I purchased the AP History study guide as well and the information in this book is very closely aligned with that, so I feel this book is hitting all the critical info. Also, my kids (9th and 11th grade) really like this book. The lessons are fairly short so they don't get bogged down. I supplement with a few videos and books from the library and have them do some extra Notebooking on historical figures and occasionally have them draw maps. I feel this rounds it out nicely.
Would you need both Book 1 and Book 2 for a complete year of high school U.S. History?
A shopper on Jul 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I've done some research on this as I had the same question. It seems most people would agree that to make a full year you would need to do both books.
However, for my daughter, we are doing the first book and using it to help prep for the US History 1 CLEP. It is a well rounded book and seems to follow an AP class pretty closely.
does it have a answer key?
A shopper on Feb 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this does have an answer key at the end of the book.

No regrets.
Definitely challenging for my 7th grader, but she seems to be retaining the material much more consistently than she did with a previous history series (Story of America). A full lesson is a lot for one school day, but 2 or 3 sections with the associated questions seems to work quite well.

I like that it’s focused on facts rather than eliciting emotion.

My daughter picked this out herself from a number of potential options.

Good resource
So far we have mostly studied world history, and we find this a good resource to cover US history in a year for an eight-grader. I have scheduled both volumes of the book for her to study 4 days a week. The material is well-written, the multiple-choice and short essay questions at the end of each chapter help us both to check that she understands the material. Every so often there are small tests that review multiple chapters.

Basic and thorough.
This curriculum is pretty straight-forward. Everything important is covered, but it isn't as wordy as a typical textbook. Each lesson has comprehension questions, and there are also review questions after several lessons; so, in theory it is everything you absolutely need. We supplement with primary source documents, living books, and videos or articles from History by Era for a little more depth. I used "Great Documents in US History" (found at Rainbow Resource) and "Document Based Activities". I use Oak Meadow's US History to provide the syllabus for our year, essay and project ideas, etc. Overall this worked together very well for us...but this book (History Detective) was really the heart of it all.
