Category Description for MCP Spelling Workout 2001 Ed.:

This updated version is very similar to the older edition. The most noticeable differences are a more contemporary page layout and a reduction in sports-themed headings like "warm-ups" and "pep talks." Other differences include an extra writing activity at the end of each lesson in the student book, but the removal of references to warm-ups, final tests, and bonus words activities. All information and instruction on these activities are now found only in the teachers manual. While you can still "get by" using the program without the teachers manual, you may want the teachers manual to get the most out of the program. Some content has been updated, including several new reading/editing passages and a few new word lists. Aside from these differences most of the pages (while they may not match up exactly in page number) look very much the same. The size/length of the books have not changed. Basically, if youre trying to decide between the editions in your own homeschool, you wont lose out either way. However, if you are using Spelling Workout in a group/class/co-op situation, you will probably want to pick one edition and stick with it to ensure uniformity of word lists, and for ease of checking work. For a better value, homeschool bundles that include the student worktext and teachers edition are now available.

I love that this spelling program is "open and go". We don't have to spend a lot of time on it, but it is giving my early reader exposure to more words and reinforcing reading skills.

Currently using Level C with my 9 year old daughter. Level B was just ordered for my oldest adopted son. I feel it will help him as an ESL student. The List words given in each lesson is used multiple times and repetition is key for grasping the spelling rules given and aiding in memorization of each word. She loves the activities where she can apply the list words she is studying. I've recommended this to several friends for their children.

My daughter is finishing up Spelling Workout A and it has helped her spelling so much that we will go on with Spelling Workout B. I personally was not very impressed with the workbook but my daughter loves it and it is really working for her so I recommend it.

BEST ANSWER: No, but I always bought it so that if there was a struggle in a lesson I would have additional information for helping to teach the concept. My kids were really good with spelling so I never had to but it was affordable and a good backup. This curriculum is so good at teaching spelling that it makes the job really easy.
The photo for this bundle shows the Student and Teacher Editions for B, but the Parent Guide for C. Is that just a mistake in the photo? If ordered would I receive the Parent Guide for B or C?
A shopper on Oct 8, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The Parent Guide is a general overview document that addresses the complete series. It just coincidentally pictures Level C on its cover. The same Parent Guide is included with each bundle regardless of the of level.

Good for us
My son is happy with his spelling book and wants to start with it. The activities are engaging, approachable, good difficulty level for this age and pretty thorough.

New to Classical Ed.
I am new to homeschooling and am using a Classical Ed/Charlotte Mason approach (for the most part). I like the layout, repetition and skill-building of this book. I wish the teacher's instructions were a bit clearer and the "assignments" were more variant.

ok but does not follow a logical order
I bought this work book and the level one book for my two kids. They like the activities and are learning to spell the words. However, the words do not seem to follow any logical pattern and are just a compilation of random words. it seems to me that if the lists would follow logical order (cat, bat, rat, and some sight words thrown in) it would help my kids be better spellers over all and not just memorizers of lists.
