Product Description:

Like the highly acclaimed journals that accompany each Apologia Young Explorer textbook, the Zoology 2 Notebooking Journal will provide everything your student needs to complete his or her studies of all the glorious creatures of the oceans, lakes and streams. A companion to Exploring Creation with Zoology 2, this special notebooking journal will be treasured by your child as he or she illustrates and records fascinating facts and information learned during each lesson. There are beautifully decorated templates for completing every assignment in the book, as well as a detailed schedule to follow. Also included are pages to record projects, experiments, and activities. Finally, paste pages are provided to display the gorgeous, colorful lapbook-style miniature books your student will assemble.

What's included in the Zoology 2 Notebooking Journal:

  • A Suggested Schedule for completing the readings, notebooking assignments, activities and experiments utilizing a two-day per week plan.
  • Fascinating Facts templates for your student to record what he or she learned in each lesson, using both words and illustrations.
  • Creative templates for completing the Notebooking Assignments.
  • Review Questions for each lesson, which can be answered orally or in writing as a written narration.
  • Scripture Copywork, including both print and cursive practice, which is a valuable method for not only practicing handwriting but also memorizing Scripture and teaching spelling, grammar and writing.
  • Project Pages and Scientific Speculation Sheets for your student to keep a record of experiments or projects completed throughout the course.
  • An enormous selection of book and dvd suggestions to complement your student's studies, as well as more experiment and project ideas to Dive Deeper into each lesson.
  • Beautiful, full-color, lapbook-style Miniature Books for your student to create, encouraging him or her to record facts and information learned in each lesson. These keepsakes are placed on the Miniature Book Paste Pages.
  • Field Trip Sheets used to keep a record of field trips your student enjoyed during his or her studies.
  • A Final Review with fifty questions your student can answer either orally or in writing to show off all he or she remembers and knows about swimming creatures of the fifth day!

These notebooking journals are the perfect complement to the Exploring Creation Series. The students will cherish their individual notebooks as they make them their very own with words and illustrations, reflecting all they have learned in their pursuit of science. Additionally, these journals will serve as your record of your student's scientific endeavors throughout the year. When your child flips through his notebook, he will be reminded of the knowledge he has attained, reviewing the material as he peruses the pages he has created. The activities in this notebooking journal provide everything your child needs to complete the assignments in Exploring Creation with Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day. Recommended for use with students who have mastered handwriting, can take notes, and enjoy upper elementary level activities.

Category Description for Exploring Creation with Zoology 2:

Once students have learned all about the creatures of the air and the basics of zoology, they can take a trip into the depths and discover all the strange and unique creatures of the sea, lakes, and rivers. They'll learn about the special features of swimming creatures, the different watery environments they live in, what their lifestyles are like, and the special circumstances they deal with. Then they take a closer look at specific groups of swimming creatures, including whales, seals, sea cows, sea turtles, sea snakes, sea frogs and toads, primeval reptiles (like plesiosaurs), fish, sharks, rays, crustaceans, cephalopods, echinoderms, cnidarians, sponges, leeches, and more. As they study these creatures, they'll create replicas of them to add to an ongoing "Ocean Box," and conduct neat experiments like discovering the insulating power of fat, investigating how electrical current travels through salt water vs. fresh water, and determining how much of a role temperature plays in tadpole development. They'll also add to their notebooks by drawing the animals in them, comparing and contrasting animals, and much more. Whether the ocean is a familiar place to your children or not, they'll be equally fascinated by learning about the unique creatures beneath the water.

Category Description for Apologia Science (K-6):

This popular elementary science series was originally created when Jeannie Fulbright, author and homeschool mom, was looking for a quality elementary science series that was creation-based using the Charlotte Mason approach. When she didn't find the curriculum she was looking for she decided to create her own. These books use the classical and Charlotte Mason methodology including narration and notebooking to develop critical thinking, logical ordering, retention, and record keeping. The series has since expanded to cover more science topics. New for 2021 is Earth Science, authored by Rachel Yunis, author of Exploring Creation with Advanced Biology.

Since the Charlotte Mason method is employed, every lesson is organized with a narrative, notebook work, an activity, and a project. The student notebook is emphasized in the lessons. Activities and projects bring the lessons to life and use simple household items. While the author's intent is for the parent to read these books to elementary students, a student with a 4th-grade reading level could read these books on their own. The books come from a strong creationist viewpoint, including sections called "Creation Confirmation" and Scripture interwoven throughout the book. Apologia recommends spending an entire year covering each book, taking about two weeks to explore most lessons (some lessons may require more time).

Notebooking Journals were a later - and welcome - addition to the series. As they complete the courses, students were encouraged to compile a notebook to collect and display the information they are learning. The Apologia Notebooking Journals now provide a place for the student to complete every assignment, to record experiments and to display work. Included are weekly lesson plans, templates for recording fascinating facts and assignments, and scripture copywork in both print and cursive models. In addition to full-color Miniature Books (for recording facts and information and pasting directly into the notebook), there are optional ideas (Take it Further in Astronomy; Dig in Deeper in Botany; Fly Higher in Zoology, etc.) for lots of additional activities, projects, experiments, books or videos, all of which correlate with specific lessons in each course. Along these lines, the Personal Person project in both of the Anatomy notebooks is special providing clear vinyl overlays of each body system. Be prepared to cut these out, though.

Junior Notebooking Journals are a simplified version of the orignal Notebooking Journals and require less handwriting but have the same reinforcing activities. These books include coloring pages, project pages, and cut and fold miniature books (same ones as in the version for older students). There is space for notebooking assignments (more drawings, no questions to answer) and scripture copywork (shorter verses to copy either in manuscript or in beginning cursive). Biblical quotations are from the NASB, KJV, NIV or NKJV.

To complete the books all you will need to provide is scissors, glue, colored pencils, a stapler, and a few brass fasteners. There are plenty of activity options in the journals, but keep in mind that based on your student, you may not want to complete every activity. Work can be tailored to each student by simply tearing out unwanted pages from the spiral-bound book. Serving both as a uniquely expressed record of the student's work and as a prized reminder of acquired knowledge, these books will become a homeschooling heirloom.

For convenience, we now offer either Advantage Sets or SuperSets. Advantage Sets include the textbook and either the Junior or original Notebooking Journal. SuperSets include the text, the MP3 Audiobook CD and either the Junior or the original Notebooking Journal.

We also offer lab kits from Nature's Workshop for the elementary courses. Kits contain most of the materials for the experiments, and are conveniently packaged by lesson in the corresponding book (sold separately). There are still a few items you will need from around your house, but with these kits the list becomes extremely short. ~ Janice / Jerry

Category Description for Apologia Science:

Apologia Science courses are written from a Biblical worldview with the homeschool in mind. At the elementary level, courses follow a Charlotte Mason-inspired methodology, with lessons organized around narration, notebooking exercises and hands-on activities or projects. Children at different ages can use these together, learning at their own level. Each course is designed to be teacher-student interactive, so teacher involvement is fairly high at this level. At the junior high and high school levels, science courses are more traditional in nature, with the textbook written to the student. Teacher involvement time at this level is much less than at the elementary level. Textbooks contain student reading, lab instructions, "On Your Own" questions and Study Guide questions. A Solutions Manual provides the answers to these and the test questions. Lab kits are available separately for both the elementary and upper-level science courses which include most of the harder to find items you will need.

BEST ANSWER: We used the journal to go along with the class for my 5th grader. The system works best if you can start from the first book on Astronomy and work your way forward through botany and flying creatures as some of the material references information in the previous courses. I'm sure it would be ok as a stand alone class, but I wanted you to know the best pathway also. All of these courses have options to teach them for a younger or older class.

Simplifies Science
I wasn't sure if my children (ages 10 and 8) would like or even want to use these notebooks along side our Zoology 2 science this year. I decided to buy them and try them out anyway and it turns out they absolutely LOVE them! We use notebooking in our homeschool for many of our subjects and I think they especially enjoy these notebooks because it is somewhat guided for them while still allowing for a lot of creativity and imagination. I love having all the pages in one book. No having to search Pinterest or Google for pages or ideas to use with our science lessons. Highly recommend especially if you already use the notebooking method. It has helped my children remember many of the concepts taught in the book.

I find several of the worksheets not very useful or interesting. I probably would not order the student notebook again.

Great addition to the book
We love the apologia science curriculum and this journal made it so much easier for me as mom/teacher to keep them focused as we progressed through the chapters. We enjoyed the booklets/projects at the end of each chapter and it was a positive addition to our studies.

Since I don't use a boxed curriculum I can easily get bogged down with finding supplemental materials. These notebooks have a wide variety of worksheets to keep interest and help retain knowledge.

The hardest part is deciding what NOT to do!
Adds fun and doable activities to an already great textbook. One of the best things is the list of recommended books and videos to go along with each chapter. Makes everything easier for mom!

Love Apologia!
This book is great for applying all we're learning in the textbook. We did Zoology 1 last year and this book is similar in format. My kids especially enjoyed the crossword puzzles! The extra book recommendations in each chapter are very helpful. We ended up getting a beautiful bird documentary from the library last year based upon one of the lists given and it added tremendously to our study. I love this curriculum - highly recommend getting both textbook and journal!
