Publisher Description:

The character Mr. Meerkat is the book's guide, making learning tasks fun; step by step, he shows the way to draw each letter and encourages creativity. There are clear arrow directions for letter creation, and plenty of shaded letters to trace for practice. The book is bound at the top for equal access for left- and right-handers. NACs simplified strokes and letter forms allow first grade students to truly master beautiful cursive. We have used NAC in our Highlands Latin School, with dramatic results. Every child can master cursive in the first grade, and many of our first graders write better than typical third graders. Learning cursive early ensures that students are not slowed down or frustrated in the upper grades when they are focusing on other subjects, such as grammar and composition.

Category Description for New American Cursive:

Handwriting with a bit of a different approach will teach your child cursive skills beginning in first grade. There are fewer strokes, a natural right slant, and the strokes are simplified. The philosophy is that students have the motor skills to write cursive at the first grade level, and when we wait to teach them at about third grade, they literally go back to the speed of first grade writing as they transition from print to cursive.

Each book includes a 7-page teaching guide, followed by instruction and exercises, illustrations and practice sheets with quotes and Bible verses (a secular version of Book II uses quotes from famous Americans in lieu of Bible verses). Book II and III also include handwriting evaluations, review of paper placement and pencil position, review of letter and number formations, and progress reports and test pages. The books have an uncluttered, visual appeal with uncramped space to practice. Since the books are intended for elementary grades, the spacing is very important.

'Mr. Meerkat' guides your child through each book as he shows the way to draw each letter and encourages creativity. Before the 1940s, children were taught cursive in the first grade. This course provides the opportunity to use this simple technique to bring back the art of handwriting. - Donna

My almost 6 y/o daughter can print very well and at times plays with her writing, which almost looks like cursive. I read the reviews and it seems like a good fit for her, and a good start to teach her cursive.

Perfect for starting young children with cursive writing. We usually start cursive at age 7 or 8. This is perfect and walks them through step by step. Follow up with workbook 2, and we have young children confident in their ability to write and read cursive.

Is the New American Cursive Book Secular? I see that the other levels give a choice, but Level 1 does not.
Shannon on Aug 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it is. The book has students write simple words that begin with the assigned letter (bat, hat, car, etc.) with now religious words. At the very end of the book, students are instructed to copy and write independently the Pledge of Allegiance. That is the only "content" in the book. Otherwise, it simply teaches how to form letters and numbers.
Is there a teacher's book for this?
User on Jul 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No. There is a brief section at the beginning of the book for the teacher. This is all you need to buy. My daughter has really enjoyed learning cursive from the New American cursive books. As a first grader it was the one subject that she was able to do fairly independently.
Does this contain bible verses?
Gabriela Z on Oct 19, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I know the first book has the Pledge of Allegiance. I don't recall any Bible verses. I know for certain that there are Bible verses and references to God in books two and three. There was a little Latin translation with English and Spanish as a lesson in there somewhere too (second book?). Hope that helps.

Horrible looking font
I use the Memoria Press complete package, but I skip American Cursive. Instead I use Abeka. This cursive almost a print/cursive hybrid. Some of the letter look the same as the print versions. I do not find this cursive attractive at all.

Best for those introducing cursive early
We started this product during the last half of 2nd grade (not the first time exposed to cursive with another program however), and my learner already has decent legibility with his printing. So I'm skipping over some of the "just learning to write" basics in the beginning, but it's solid practice for a child who needs to back over the basics of cursive and teaching for a young learner. I like the simplicity of the style and would definitely recommend it for early elementary students.

Well Done
I expected a boring cursive book but found, to my pleasure, that this book is engaging and as cheerful as a handwriting book can be. There is just enough practice for a child to "get it." But, not so much as to bore or tire them out. Happy purchase.

Great product
My 6.5 year old son has been begging to learn cursive. We picked this up and it's perfect. The explanations are fun and aimed toward small kids, with a friendly character explaining writing in terms of play (climb up, slide down, etc.). The size of the print is good, and there is some room for kids to draw or add in artwork of their own (we've not done it, but it could be an easy enhancement to ask them to draw a cursive letter and turn it into a picture at the bottom, or something fun like that).

Great for beginners
I decided to start my kindergartener and 2nd grader with this. I have tried other materials for them to learn cursive, but couldn't get them to stick. They are both doing a beautiful job of writing. They enjoy it. Their print, I think is improving simultaneously (I allow them to print in workbooks, as they know what their letters look like and can write them). They enjoy being able to work independently on this, but I may have to check that they didn't skip pages. I have been super impressed with my 5/6yr old's writing. She is so proud of her work. I sometimes have to check if a letter was me working with her, or her own. (I just have to remind them on occasion to follow the stroke number order.) I wish I would have started my oldest with cursive! What a battle to get her to do cursive now! Also having my oldest in book 2 to correct some of her cursive writing errors she has developed.

My eight year old son recently completed New American Cursive I and his handwriting is just beautiful The workbook is nicely laid out with plenty of writing reinforcement and practice for each letter My son essentially worked through it on his own with very little help from me I am ordering NAC II for him and NAC I for his six year old sister Highly recommended!
