Solutions Manual contains solutions to all problems in the text and tests.

Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

My son is finishing Saxon 3 without issue. He is in 2nd grade but will move onto 3rd in the fall. I plan to continue homeschool, at least for next year. I’m not concerned about him being further ahead than his peers if he goes back to public school but I don’t want him to lose his motivation to do well in math either. What is the better option for a nine year old entering third grade, 5/4 or the other level 4? He will finish 3 with an “A.”

How much time is supposed to be allotted for the tests? I see that the facts practice tests are supposed to be completed in 5 minutes, but can't find any guidance on how much time to allow for completion of the other tests. Please advise. Thanks!
Rebecca on Nov 7, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I think any time that is reasonable compared to how long a daily lesson usually takes is acceptable. For example my 9yo takes about 40 mins to complete her lesson of 30 problems, so her tests take her a little over a minute, on average, per problem. Hope that helps.
How do you score Saxon Math lessons and tests for a grade? I use this curriculum, but I don’t see any instructions on how to grade my children’s work—how many points should each problem be for math lessons, tests, and fact practices?
A shopper on Oct 19, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The solutions manuals provide answers and solutions for both the student text and tests. You can either check your student's daily work - or have them do so with random "honesty" checks from you. To arrive at a grade, I would put the correct number answered over the total number of problems (i.e. 20 problems for test) and then multiply that fraction times 100 to put the score on a typical 100-based grading scale. In other words for the tests, each answer/problem is worth 5 points.

Is there a 5/4 saxon book that is hard bound?
A shopper on Aug 26, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Older editions of this course were hardbound but the current edition (3rd) is only available as a soft-cover book. Math Intermediate 4 (which has similar content and format) is a hardbound book.

Is the text to be written in or are problems to be worked out on separate paper?
User on Feb 6, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Problems are worked out on a separate sheet, with no space for writing in the text. This made me nervous for my very young 4th grader, but with a separate spiral notebook and a ruler, he has really learned the importance of copying numbers accurately, and how essential it is to line up equations.

He mostly self-teaches, asking me questions when the need arises. I don't assign the entire body of work every day, though: he completes 4 lessons per week, alternating even/odd number problems, with one day of only completing the "practice set" (which has usually around 10 problems directly from the lesson).

One last thing which is helpful to know...the next level of Saxon Math, the 6/5 level, begin approximately halfway through the 5/4 text. We plugged through the 5/4 until we were right at the end (there was a family move and some illness, so we got behind), then went right into 6/5, but skipped 50 lessons, and he had no problem. The lesson here is: don't be afraid to go slowly, because the foundation your child is building will serve them very well. Cheers!
What is the difference between this and Intermediate 5?
Pamela on Oct 29, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Saxon Math 5/4 corresponds to Math Intermediate 4 while Saxon Math 6/5 corresponds to Math Intermediate 5.

Math 5/4 and Math Intermediate 4 as well as Math 6/5 and Math Intermediate 5 are similar in terms of scope and sequence and in terms of general format. All have 120 Lessons plus 12 Investigations.

Both provide Saxon’s incremental spiral approach plus lots of review and repetition. Intermediate goes more into detail with the 4-step problem-solving process: 1) understand the problem, 2) devise a plan, 3) carry out the plan, and 4) look back (evaluate).

Manipulatives are referenced throughout MI-4 and MI-5 (unlike 5/4 and 6/5), but they are optional. MI-4 and MI-5 are hardcover while 5/4 and 6/5 are softcover. MI-4 and MI-5 are topically aligned to Common Core while technically 5/4 and 6/5 are not.

Most of the differences in the two editions are in the area of supplementals available. Math 5/4 has Saxon Teacher support – as well as DIVE. MI-4 and MI-5 have some supplementary products which can be helpful in certain situations - Written Practice Workbook (consumable worksheets of the Written Practice problems) and the Adaptations Student Workbook (consumable workbook containing adapted versions of the practice problems from the student textbook).

MI-4 and MI-5 also have “Early Finisher Problems” which are enrichment problems that have a real world connection.
which books are needed to offer for saxon 5/4 to offer a homeschooler all they need?
A shopper on Aug 18, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You will need the three books in the Homeschool kit - the student text, the solutions manual, and the tests/worksheets
are the DVDs necessary and who would you recommend them to?
A shopper on Jun 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The DVDs are absolutely not necessary. I bought them and my son watched it only once. He didn’t like being taught by the DVD; he prefers that I teach the concepts. I assumed that at some point I would watch the DVDs in preparation of teaching him, but the math was simple enough that I never needed too. I won’t buy them in the future, because even if I do need to watch a video to prep. for a lesson, there are numerous free sites where I can get some tutoring (i.e.: YouTube and Khan Academy).
Are any manipulatives used with the Saxon5/4 book?
A shopper on May 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No. The only extra items you'll need are a ruler, protractor, etc.

Much better, less frustration all around.
My daughter is doing better with this than she was with Singapore 3A/3B. Spiral rather than mastery works for her. Ship time was quick which I appreciate.

Uncomplicated, open and go
Straight forward math with constant review of previous lessons. Each lesson is an introduction to one new concept at a time. The curriculum is simple and easy to use - minimal preparation needed. I love that it Comes with tracking and grading sheets, and master copies for lesson worksheets. I give it four stars and not five for two reasons: 1) I would like to see more “real-world” application of the concepts. 2) the lessons are very basic with minimal explanation - an accompanying (secular) video option with more elaboration would be nice for the math-challenged or visual student.

Solid math curriculum
This is my first time using Saxon Math and so far I have been very happy with it. It is concise, builds nicely on previously learned material, gives practice on skills to maintain them but does not overload my child with work. The explanations are clear and easy to understand. I'm happy with this purchase!

Best math curriculum I've ever found.
Excellent for children with autism. Previous lesson concepts are repeated and reiterated with each new lesson along with the new lesson material. It is essentially like a continued review throughout the text

Great book for 4th grade
My daughter is doing so much better in Math since I switched her curriculum. She struggled at the end of the 3rd grade year with Math U See. Saxon goes much more in depth to explain and give examples every lesson. The spiral incremental approach is very helpful. This is making our first homeschool year easier

Very detailed and thorough but not a good fit for us
This particular curriculum did not work for my daughter. While the information is clear and easy to understand the volume of work was just way too much. By design it requires at minimum about an hour to complete each lesson, with 15 minutes warm up, 10 min reading the chapter to learn the new concepts, 15+ min to do practice work on the new concepts and then up to 45 min on mixed practice work. It was leaving my daughter stressed and anxious about doing math which would result in poor performance.
