Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

Category Description for Saxon Algebra 1 3rd Ed (with Geometry):

Covers signed numbers, exponents, solving equations, two equations with unknowns, graphing equations, scientific notation, ratio, percent, variation, unit conversions, geometry, perimeter, area, volume, English to metric conversion, surface area. 3rd edition.

Category Description for Mastering Algebra DVDs by Art Reed:

Yet another teaching tool for Saxon! This series of DVDs is done specifically for Saxon math. Taught by Art Reed, a former curriculum advisor in the home school division of Saxon Publishers, these DVDs teach concepts in an interesting classroom-type setting. Students view Mr. Reeds lessons Monday through Thursday, and then take their test on Friday.

Mr. Reed doesnt go through the actual problems found in the texts, but if you have a student who just needs a thorough explanation of each lesson, these DVDs work. You can tell by the length of some of the lessons that the explanations are a little more detailed than other supplemental teaching aids. I enjoyed watching the lessons with Mr. Reeds relaxed presentation, as he encourages and reassures the students that math doesnt have to be hard.

Each level of the series begins with a short introduction which explains placement and the Saxon methodology. There is a session for every lesson found in the Saxon textbook, and students will need to read the information found in the text before watching the video. Everything Mr. Reed presents in his sessions comes from the lesson in the text, and he also mentions alternative methods along with interesting comments. Lessons range in length from 5 to 25 minutes depending on the concept. He offers step-by-step instruction of the daily concept with samples for clarification. Mr. Reeds explanations are simple and make sense as he draws on a whiteboard and gives pertinent illustrations. This series is a good alternative for the student who responds better to a person making the presentation as opposed to just reading about it. ~ Donna

We will be using Saxon all the way through high school, and like the way this teacher explains the lessons as you go along. We already use his course for the Math 76, and wanted to purchase the DVD versions of all the other courses before they all sell out.

We had read fantastic reviews of Mr. Reed's video instruction, and we have since found it to be true. We have used the videos for Algebra I and Algebra II, and each of my boys has thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated Mr. Reed's presentation of the material. Mr. Reed is engaging and manages to hold their interest. They have appreciated his insight into the various difficult problems that Mr. Reed teaches.

Decided to try the DVD for a little extra help. At the Algebra level, the book can be a little vague sometimes. I love Saxon Math though. The DVD was rated better than the DIVE.

We have used Art Reed as our Math Teacher for Saxon 76, Saxon 87, Algebra II, and Advanced Math. This was the only set I needed for my second child and I knew we couldn't do Algebra I without him!

We've been very happy with the solid instruction by Art Reed. My son likes being able to see the instructor on the screen, instead of just a voice and a white board.

Why choose Mastering Algebra vs. DIVE?
Lynn on Jan 15, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Lynn, I have used both and I'll tell you why we prefer Mastering Algebra. DIVE is solely a voice with a chalkboard-like screen where writing appears on it. If your child needs fewer distractions, then DIVE might be a better choice. However, Mr. Reid appears in person in every video, illustrates the problems on the board, and talks to you as though you are in his class. He is older but my daughter enjoyed him because he was rather endearing and would readily admit when he made a mistake (which made her feel better). I like that my children felt like they were getting another "teacher" every once in a while instead of just me. But again, the DIVE serve their purpose and work fine if that's what you decide on. (One caveat: the DIVE cds tell you at the very beginning that you are not under any condition to sell or loan them out to anyone ever.) I hope that helps! Angela

BEST Saxon Math Instructional DVD's PERIOD!
This is by far the BEST Saxon Math DVD's we've ever used. We've tried DIVE and Saxon Teacher and nothing even comes close to Art Reed's Saxon DVD's. Both kids hated the other DVD lessons. It just wasn't clicking for them at all. Mr. Reed worked with John Saxon (the author of the original Saxon Math textbooks) and understands his method. Each lesson coincides lesson for lesson to the Saxon Math textbook. Whereas the other DVD's showed only a blue screen, these show Mr. Reed working the problems out of the board that are different from the examples for each lesson found in the book. He is engaging and presents the lessons in a very matter of fact manner. The one thing that my kids particularly liked is he tells you things like, "Now you may be thinking, why do I have to do all those extra steps Mr. Reed if I did THIS (and he shows you on the board) it would be faster and I'd get the right answer. But if you do this it will confuse you later on when we get to .... so it's important to do it this way and I'll explain why in a few more lessons." This was REALLY helpful and appreciated by kids. He explains not only the how to do the steps but WHY it's important to do math problems by not skipping certain steps. He doesn't dumb it down. Wouldn't use anything else! Go to for sample video lessons and to learn more about his background and his qualifications. Without a doubt, the best Saxon Math DVD's on the market.

Enjoyable, sincere instructor
We have used this series for 3 years with our son. This Algebra 1 course does not have as much of Mr. Reed's humor, which some earlier courses had, but we still enjoy the straightforward, sincere presentation. My son prefers this over the DIVE CDs because he likes seeing the instructor, rather than just a whiteboard or blue screen with a voice.
