Publisher Description:

The student textbook for Jump In will help your student learn to write persuasive papers, expository essays, descriptions_1, narration, and poetry. The easy-to-use parent/teacher section includes what to look for in an assignment, how to assign a grade, how to help the student proofread, and a one-year writing program with daily writing prompts designed to be fun and interesting.

What to do when high school is just around the corner and your middle schooler HATES to write? Jump In: Middle School Composition covers all the basics needed for high school writing in an engaging fashion; humor sneaking in occasionally. Daily lessons will take 5 – 20 minutes to complete. Instruction is written directly to the student and sometimes involves Bible stories or characters. Lessons might start with 10-Minute Writing Plunges that are designed to engage reluctant writers or appeal to eager writers. Or the Plunges can be a break from other assignments or a course by themselves. Plunges prompts are given M-Th with no grading (or turning in). On Friday, the student chooses which one they like best, proofreads it, and gets it ready to hand in. Each chapter also features longer essay/composition assignments that are broken down into tasty little bites in the well-constructed, step-by-step lessons. Each assignment comes with a suggested writing schedule and a checklist in the student worktext. It’s likewise easy on the teacher with detailed and specific grading grids. The consumable Student Book covers prewriting skills, paragraph development, expressing opinions, persuasive writing, cause/effect, expository writing, descriptive writing, compare/contrast, reports, narration, and poetry. Chapters are extremely readable and interactive, interweaving paragraphs of instruction with short workbook activities. Students learn about the type of writing and the writing process, honing the individual skills necessary to compose a piece of writing. Readable chunks of text and an engaging writing style set this apart as a "manageable not overwhelming" writing course. The Teacher Guide provides objectives for the course, a summary of all writing assignments, detailed/specific grading grids, the 10-Minute Writing Plunge ideas by month, tips to help and inspire the student writer, tips to help the writer proofread his/her work, a substantial section on grading (with examples), and an answer key to the short exercises in the book. The Set includes both Student and Teacher books.

I've heard this program recommended multiple times for middle school, so we're going to give it a try.

Highly recommended from another homeschooling family. Knowing they'd used different writing curriculum, I asked their 14 year old- Which writing curriculum did you like most? - He said this one! Looking forward to using with my middle schoolers this year.

I bought the 1st edition many years ago but didn't use it with my oldest. I can't figure out why! I found it in my stash, and it looked so good that I ordered the 2nd edition to use with three of my younger kids next year.

I chose this book because I have used it with my older 2 kids and I think it does an excellent job of not only helping kids get writing ideas but also helps them organize their essays.
Carol T on Dec 3, 2018
We have really enjoyed this easy-to-use book/workbook. Fun and not overwhelming for the student. For some reason, it looks as if they are not continuing to print this book; so I am ordering 4 for my remaining 4 younger students!

I am home schooling children of various grade levels who have little/no interest in completing writing assignments. This curriculum looks like it might work--especially for my oldest son who is in high school.

Melissa K H on Aug 19, 2016
Loved using it with my high school student who needed to build confidence. Using with my 8th grader this time around.
Claudia E on Aug 12, 2016
I chose this product because it is written to the student and very easy to understand for the target age group - 5-8 grade. It's conversational style will also allow me to use it with my 4th grader as well. I'm planning to have my 7th grader use this independently as it appears well suited to this type of learning. It seems like a great fit for homeschoolers.

How many weeks does this last? Is it meant to last for a whole school year, or shorter?
Lauren on Jul 6, 2021
BEST ANSWER: We used this once a week as a skill-builder, allowing my child to work the lessons independently. Used that way, it lasts about one school year. Keep in mind that some lessons take longer than others; furthermore, there may be some lessons which your child simply does not need. I use many of Sharon Watson's products, as her relaxed and converstaional style is very attractive to a teenage (or pre-teen) audience. However, I rarely use her materials as stand-alone courses; rather, I use them as independent writing boosters and skill-builders in addition to our other language arts materials. Very few of her products actually have a set schedule, which I like for the way in which we use them. She has a terrific website-check it out.
Does either the student text or the teacher's guide have lesson plans, i.e. what to do each day for how many weeks?
A shopper on Jun 23, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The Teacher Guide does not have lesson plans per se.

The Teacher Guide provides objectives for the course, a summary of all writing assignments, detailed/specific grading grids, the 10-Minute Writing Plunge ideas by month, tips to help and inspire the student writer, tips to help the writer proofread his/her work, a substantial section on grading (with examples), and an answer key to the short exercises in the book
can this count as high school credit?
A shopper on Dec 26, 2019
BEST ANSWER: This has been created for middle school students. The author has a high school level course "The Power in Your Hands." https://www.rainbowresource.com/category/11000/Power-in-Your-Hands-Writing-Nonfiction.html
What are the big differences between the 2019 version and the 2006 version?
User on Apr 28, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Probably the biggest differences between the two editions is the cover and the internal artwork. The basic instructional lessons and sequence are the same. The instructional material/lessons are more or less the same with only minor tweaks. There is still the same excellent progression of writing skills through the various forms of writing.

This writing course was very well received by a reluctant writer as well as a reluctant writing teacher (me) There is very little teacher involvement necessary as the book clearly explains and gives examples of each step of the writing process My son enjoyed each assignment which were creative and allowed him to choose the topics There is enough material to cover two years of writing instruction for children grades 5-12 I would highly recommend this to other homeschoolers
