Publisher Description:

Ticket to Ride is a cross-country train adventure in which players collect and play matching train cards to claim railway routes connecting cities throughout North America. The longer the routes, the more points they earn. Additional points come to those who can fulfill their Destination Tickets by connecting two distant cities, and to the player who builds the longest continuous railway. The object of the game is to score the highest number of total points. Points can be scored by: claiming a Route between two cities on the map; successfully completing a Continuous Path of routes between two cities listed on your Destination Ticket(s); or by completing the Longest Continuous Path of routes. Points are lost if you do not successfully complete the route given on your Destination Ticket(s).

Category Description for Ticket to Ride:

This game has become one of our family favorites. 2 to 5 players draw tickets to connect rail routes between major cities and attempt to complete them in the most direct route possible. Routes are built in sections of 1 to 6 railcars based on playing cards of the designated color for the section. Longer routes and longer sections score more points than shorter ones. Since routes can have sections that overlap, competition for certain segments adds to the excitement. Strategy is not too complicated, so that younger players are not at a disadvantage. Games take from 45 to 75 minutes, depending on the number of players. The basic game is based on North American geography, while TTR Europe has slightly different rules and covers Europe and eastern Asia. TTR USA 1910 is an expansion that allows 3 more variations of the basic TTR game. Ticket to Ride Expansions (3-AD) (ages 8+) Across the exotic lands of Asia, from Africa, to Germany, and all the way to the Northern face of Europe, the rumble of locomotives can be heard around the world. Explore wildly different locations and circumstances around the globe as you expand your train lines in these new Ticket to Ride editions. The gameplay is similar to the original Ticket to Ride, but each map has its own challenges to overcome, including mountains, valleys, ferries, rough terrain, tolls, and other unique regional challenges. Despite the varying climates, treacherous landscapes, and locational nuances, your goal is the same. Create the best route, collect the most valuable tickets, and connect cities to beat your competition! Games listed as Expansions require Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride Europe to play. Other editions are stand-alone and require no other Ticket to Ride games to play. Games last roughly 30-60 minutes.Happy travels!

I chose this game because it looks like it may help teach Geography. We have just started doing some light Geography and my daughter gets pretty frustrated. If this can help teach in a fun way that doesn't feel overwhelming, we may try some of the expansion packs later.

Easy to learn how to play and lots of fun!
I bought this for my family for Christmas, and we've already played it several times. My 12 year old has even played it by himself. I would budget more than 30-45 minutes per game; however. I'd say minimum 1 hour if you have more than 3 players.

Engaging, challenging, do-able FUN! Hour or less play time.
This is a fabulous game for teens and adults...even the elementary kids enjoy playing (after the teen took the time to figure out the rules). It's much less complicated than Rail Baron...quite doable in an hour or less. So glad we got it. Pretty sturdy pieces. Helps geography :).

Fun Game for the Whole Family
We got this game for Christmas and have enjoyed it. It seems overwhelming at first, but as you start playing it gets easier and is tons of fun. We're a big board game family here and this definitely goes on the short list of games we love!

Geography and Math In a Fun Way
I was hoping for the best, but not fully sure. I've never spent so much on a game, so it felt like a gamble to me, but, it was one that paid off. The first time I set it up, it felt a little overwhelming, but we quickly picked it up and really enjoy the game. While it is simple enough for us to play and enjoy, (and not consult the rules every few minutes) I can also see how with more experience you can create more strategies and almost discover more facets to the game so that even when you feel you have the game mastered, you won't get bored. From a homeschool mom's perspective, it helps children learn some of the major cities and there is some simple math involved for tallying scores (my daughter is in second grade and can do this easily). Side note: with two players there isn't really any competition, the first time I played with my daughter, she showed me her cards and I helped her plot a course, which in no way interfered with my cards/game. I can see how with more players, creating your rail lines can get more complex and competitive. Overall, if you just want a friendly game - a 2 player round is great, the more players the more competition.

Fun game to play
We have been playing this game for a few years. The whole family can enjoy this game. It does familiarize you to places in the USA. It is easy to learn but doesn't get boring after playing for a time. It is a little long to play so we only play when we have the time. Definitely a game to have.

Great game!
Our family plays a lot of games. This is our newest favorite. We play it as often as our busy schedule allows, often playing two times right in a row. The kids ask if we can "do Geography." We love it!!!
