Product Description:

This book is now in 2nd ed. and chapters include What is Astronomy, The Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, The Moon, Mars, Space Rocks, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Kuiper Belt and the Dwarf Planets, and Stars, Galaxies, and Space Travel. The last few chapters are where you see a change in the chapter sequence from the first edition chapters 11 and through 14. There are still interesting activities and projects including a model solar system made of balloons, pinhole eclipse viewing box, making a compass, understanding the moon phases, and creating an astrometer. Children are sure to remember the information they are learning between hearing the text, performing the hands-on activities, and completing the journal pages.

The text is formatted differently from first edition it begins with an explanation of the text, activities, course website, and notebooking journals. Each lesson is full of new photography and illustrations and interspersed with scripture. Blue "Think about this and "Wisdom from Above boxes give special attention to the Creator, and orange questions are scattered throughout the lessons for students to think about and explain. Activities for each lesson include instructions and illustrations for completion. Every chapter is rounded out with "What do you Remember? where students recall information from the lesson. The appendices include a lesson-by-lesson supply list for hands-on activities and an answer key for "What do you Remember? questions.

Notebooking journals are now in full color and color-coordinated. A suggested schedule is in the front of each notebooking journal, but you decide how many times a week to do your curriculum. The schedule lists daily assignments (71 total), and the lists have items listed in 3 different colors green for textbook reading assignments, blue for notebook assignments, and brown for science kit activities. Pages in the notebooking journal are formatted for students to answer questions and complete activities. A review of the inner planets now follows lesson 8, review of the outer planets follows lesson 12, and a final review follows lesson 14. "Take it Further pages are now drawing, making lists of books you've read, movies you've watched, additional experiments you may have completed, and making scrapbooking pages. Copywork is still included and coloring pages in the junior notebooking journals. There are answer keys in the back for vocabulary crossword puzzles and final review questions.

Because of the content changes, first edition products won't work with the 2nd edition.

The Textbook and Regular Notebooking Journal have been reprinted with new, updated covers. The content is essentially the same except the reference to the Astronomy Lab Kit has been removed. At this time, the Junior Notebook has not been updated.

Publisher Description:

Exploring Creation with Astronomy, 2nd Edition, is a homeschool science course for elementary grades K-6 and part of our Young Explorer Series authored by Jeannie Fulbright. For over 11 years in a row, The Young Explorer Series has been voted the #1 homeschool science for elementary grades.

Explore the farthest reaches of God’s creation with this new and revised edition of our award-winning astronomy course. With many hands-on activities to help young scientists retain what they learn, our science curriculum uses the Charlotte Mason methodology to introduce elementary-level students to the wonders of our solar system, the stars, and beyond. Our tour of the universe begins with our sun, the planets, the asteroid belt, dwarf planets, and the Kuiper belt. Then we set off across the stars to explore galaxies, nebulae, and even black holes as they reveal the marvel and might of our loving Creator.

This title is part of the Young Explorer Series, authored by Jeannie Fulbright.

Now in the 2nd edition, chapters include, "What is Astronomy?," "The Sun," "Mercury," "Venus," "Earth," "The Moon," "Mars," "Space Rocks," "Jupiter," "Saturn," "Uranus," "Neptune," "Kuiper Belt and the Dwarf Planets," and "Stars, Galaxies, and Space Travel." Chapters 11-14 are where you see a change in the chapter sequence from the first edition. There are still interesting activities and projects including a model solar system made of balloons, pinhole eclipse viewing box, making a compass, understanding the moon phases, and creating an astrometer. The text is formatted differently from first edition - it begins with an explanation of the text, activities, course website, and the notebooking journals in clear bold print. Each lesson is full of new photography and illustrations and interspersed with scripture. Blue "Think about this" and "Wisdom from Above" boxes give special attention to the Creator, and questions are scattered throughout. Activities for each lesson include instructions and illustrations. Every chapter is rounded out with "What do you Remember?" for review. Appendices include a lesson-by-lesson supply list for hands-on activities and an answer key for "What do you Remember?" questions.

The Astronomy 1st/2nd edition supply kit from Nature's Workshop still contains the supplies for all of the activities which are printed in the text.

Notebooking journals (sold separately) are now in full color and color-coordinated. Notebooking Journals are for mid- to upper-elementary students who can write independently. Junior Notebooking Journals are for early elementary students or those who are still developing writing skills. These feature activities that require less handwriting and more coloring. A suggested schedule is provided at the beginning, with 71 daily assignments, and the lists have items listed in 3 different colors - green for textbook reading assignments, and blue for notebook assignments. Pages in the Notebooking Journals are formatted for students to answer questions and complete activities. A review of the inner planets now follows Lesson 8, review of the outer planets follows Lesson 12, and a final review follows lesson 14. "Take it Further" pages are now drawing, making lists of books you've read, movies you've watched, additional experiments you may have completed, and making scrapbooking pages. Copywork is still included and coloring pages in the junior notebooking journals. Answer keys are provided for vocabulary crossword puzzles and final review questions.

The Textbook and Regular Notebooking Journal have been reprinted with new, updated covers. The content is essentially the same except the reference to the Astronomy Lab Kit has been removed. At this time, the Junior Notebook has not been updated.

Because of the content changes, 1st edition products are not compatible with the 2nd edition.

Category Description for Exploring Creation with Astronomy:

This book covers the nature of astronomy, the structures of the solar system (from the Sun to Pluto, including the moon and asteroids), stars, galaxies, and space travel. Some of the fun notebook assignments include making a mnemonic phrase, a comic strip, an advertisement, and writing a play. With interesting activities and projects including making a telescope, solar eclipse, craters, moon phases, and an astrometer, children are sure to remember the information they are learning.

Category Description for Apologia Science (K-6):

This popular elementary science series was originally created when Jeannie Fulbright, author and homeschool mom, was looking for a quality elementary science series that was creation-based using the Charlotte Mason approach. When she didn't find the curriculum she was looking for she decided to create her own. These books use the classical and Charlotte Mason methodology including narration and notebooking to develop critical thinking, logical ordering, retention, and record keeping. The series has since expanded to cover more science topics. New for 2021 is Earth Science, authored by Rachel Yunis, author of Exploring Creation with Advanced Biology.

Since the Charlotte Mason method is employed, every lesson is organized with a narrative, notebook work, an activity, and a project. The student notebook is emphasized in the lessons. Activities and projects bring the lessons to life and use simple household items. While the author's intent is for the parent to read these books to elementary students, a student with a 4th-grade reading level could read these books on their own. The books come from a strong creationist viewpoint, including sections called "Creation Confirmation" and Scripture interwoven throughout the book. Apologia recommends spending an entire year covering each book, taking about two weeks to explore most lessons (some lessons may require more time).

Notebooking Journals were a later - and welcome - addition to the series. As they complete the courses, students were encouraged to compile a notebook to collect and display the information they are learning. The Apologia Notebooking Journals now provide a place for the student to complete every assignment, to record experiments and to display work. Included are weekly lesson plans, templates for recording fascinating facts and assignments, and scripture copywork in both print and cursive models. In addition to full-color Miniature Books (for recording facts and information and pasting directly into the notebook), there are optional ideas (Take it Further in Astronomy; Dig in Deeper in Botany; Fly Higher in Zoology, etc.) for lots of additional activities, projects, experiments, books or videos, all of which correlate with specific lessons in each course. Along these lines, the Personal Person project in both of the Anatomy notebooks is special providing clear vinyl overlays of each body system. Be prepared to cut these out, though.

Junior Notebooking Journals are a simplified version of the orignal Notebooking Journals and require less handwriting but have the same reinforcing activities. These books include coloring pages, project pages, and cut and fold miniature books (same ones as in the version for older students). There is space for notebooking assignments (more drawings, no questions to answer) and scripture copywork (shorter verses to copy either in manuscript or in beginning cursive). Biblical quotations are from the NASB, KJV, NIV or NKJV.

To complete the books all you will need to provide is scissors, glue, colored pencils, a stapler, and a few brass fasteners. There are plenty of activity options in the journals, but keep in mind that based on your student, you may not want to complete every activity. Work can be tailored to each student by simply tearing out unwanted pages from the spiral-bound book. Serving both as a uniquely expressed record of the student's work and as a prized reminder of acquired knowledge, these books will become a homeschooling heirloom.

For convenience, we now offer either Advantage Sets or SuperSets. Advantage Sets include the textbook and either the Junior or original Notebooking Journal. SuperSets include the text, the MP3 Audiobook CD and either the Junior or the original Notebooking Journal.

We also offer lab kits from Nature's Workshop for the elementary courses. Kits contain most of the materials for the experiments, and are conveniently packaged by lesson in the corresponding book (sold separately). There are still a few items you will need from around your house, but with these kits the list becomes extremely short. ~ Janice / Jerry

Category Description for Apologia Science:

Apologia Science courses are written from a Biblical worldview with the homeschool in mind. At the elementary level, courses follow a Charlotte Mason-inspired methodology, with lessons organized around narration, notebooking exercises and hands-on activities or projects. Children at different ages can use these together, learning at their own level. Each course is designed to be teacher-student interactive, so teacher involvement is fairly high at this level. At the junior high and high school levels, science courses are more traditional in nature, with the textbook written to the student. Teacher involvement time at this level is much less than at the elementary level. Textbooks contain student reading, lab instructions, "On Your Own" questions and Study Guide questions. A Solutions Manual provides the answers to these and the test questions. Lab kits are available separately for both the elementary and upper-level science courses which include most of the harder to find items you will need.

Would you recommend starting with Astronomy or Earth Science for a 2nd grader/Kindergartener?
Jessica on Jun 3, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Astronomy. It is so much fun for them to explore the stars and make planets at those ages. That is exactly when I did astronomy... daughter in 2nd, son in K.
I have seen two pictures on the covers of Exploring Creation with astronomy 2nd edition. Is there a difference in the two?
Amanda on Apr 18, 2021
BEST ANSWER: There is one small change in the new printing. The contents are completely the same, except that in the textbook and schedule section of the notebooking journal the reference to the Astronomy Lab Kit is omitted since Apologia no longer produces it. The Junior Notebooking Journal was not reprinted this year, so it still has the old cover.
Are the activities and experiments in the textbook or in the notebook or you have to purchase something separately? I plan to order just the textbook so wondering if I will still be able to see the experiments and activities in it?
A shopper on Jan 21, 2021
BEST ANSWER: The experiments are in the textbook. The notebook has a page dedicated to writing about the experiment, but it is not necessary to have the notebook to complete the experiment. The textbook tells you materials needed. There are additional note booking activities in the "Notebook Journal" that my kids do enjoy. Lapbook type activities, and coloring pages. They are not necessary though, you could totally just to the textbook and be fine! Hope that helps!
Where can I find the ISBN # for text books?
A shopper on Aug 18, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Here is the ISBN for this book: 9781940110585

Normally, on our site, you will see the ISBN listed a bit below the price listing. I'm sorry for the lack in this case. We will get that corrected.
Trying to decided on a science curriculum for our first year homeschooling. While I've heard so many good things about Apologia's science, did you (or your kids) not get bored studying just one topic (Astronomy, Botany, etc.) all year long?

Exploring Creation with Astronomy Textbook (2nd edition)
Exploring Creation w/ Botany
Exploring Creation w/ Botany
BEST ANSWER: Nope. We did not. The curriculum with the journal was interesting and we did some fun field trips as well. It’s a great curriculum. You could always start with it, taking a break to explore another topic if you find it difficult to maintain the interest over time. We didn’t need to do that though.
Is this Catholic or Protestant?
Debbie on Jun 21, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure that astronomy per se can be either, but insofar as nothing in the text references anything in the Apocrypha, Protestant.
can you use the second edition journalist notebook with the first edition text? I have the first edition text but only the 2nd edition notebooks are available now.
A shopper on Mar 20, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Per the publisher, it's not possible to use 2nd edition material with 1st edition text. I'm sorry. There were numerous changes in the 2nd edition.
Do you absolutely need to purchase the lab kit or are the items needed for experiments easily found in the store?
A shopper on Apr 19, 2017
Exploring Creation with Astronomy Textbook (2nd edition)
Exploring Creation with Astronomy Textbook (2nd edition)
Exploring Creation with Astronomy Junior Notebooking Journal (2nd edition)
Exploring Creation with Astronomy Junior Notebooking Journal (2nd edition)
BEST ANSWER: You can certainly accumulate the items from things around the house or from local stores. The items are not hard to locate. I did find it very helpful for our family, that our son could simply go to the lab kit, pull out the pre-packaged accessories for that lesson, and proceed with the experiment without my needing to gather items from around the house. It is incredibly convenient to have the work done for you, but it is not a necessity. If you choose not to purchase the kit, I would encourage you to take the time to assemble the needed items at the beginning of the year so that the experiments don't sneak up on you and catch you unprepared!

Great!
I'm using this with my fourth grader and first grader. My four-year-old listens in, too. Great writing style. Great amount of information--not too much, but enough to feel like a very solid course for their ages. Not all of the projects have proven to be a smashing success at our house, but we have certainly had fun with some of them! Definitely recommend!

Great Science Text
I really like Apologia science! I like how they focus on facts and not theories aka Charles Darwin. However, the text is advanced and can be dry to read to younger children. The notebook that accompanies this text is a must! Hands and colorful!

Fantastic way to teach your child about space and, specifically, about our solar system.
We loved this course! We bought the accompanying student notebook and did every experiment the text suggested. My son (age seven) learned so much about our solar system. The pages are beautiful and the lessons are really well-written. I highly recommend this one!

Very well written
We really like this Astronomy book, it is very well done and talks about all the important matters in a godly way that need to be addressed at a school level. My husband also really likes the recap questions of each chapter, this way he knows what to ask of my son at the end of the day when he returns from work, knowing what he has covered during the day.
