The consumable Meeting Books are used during the teacher-student "meeting" in which concepts are introduced, demonstrated and practiced. If teaching more than one student at the same level, you will only need one meeting book. Consumable Student Workbooks are used in grades 1-3 only and contain student materials, flash cards and practice pages. The Math K Home Study Kit contains teacher edition and meeting book. Math 1, 2, and 3 kits contain teacher edition, meeting book, and a set of 2 workbooks. Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

We have been using the Saxon series for several years. They are very challenging, but our children also realize how much they are learning as compared to their peers and are very confident with arithmetic.

Can someone explain oral assessments? I see no guidance as to how to do an oral assessment. Thank you
A shopper on Jul 27, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Guidance for oral assessments can be found on the Oral Assessment Recording Forms in some of the first pages of the student workbook. It lists materials needed for each oral assessment and gives guidance on what to ask the student.
Does this set contain flashcards? We are finishing up with Saxon Math 2, which includes flashcards for addition/subtraction and multiplication/division facts. Only the book ends with not learning all of the multiplication facts, so I'm wondering if the rest of the multiplication/division fact cards are included in this Saxon Math Intermediate 3 set.

BEST ANSWER: Saxon Math 3 Home Study Kit includes flashcards. I'm not sure about Saxon Math Intermediate 3.
My daughter just turned 7 and we are switching to Saxon math. She did Horizon's K last year because Horizon's 1 was overwhelming and frustrating her. We did the placement test and she was placed easily in Saxon 2. However, she has not memorized any math facts as of yet and she still struggles with time and money. I am wondering if Math 1 would be a better fit but a lot of the concepts listed she has already mastered. Will the things she has not learned/mastered be re-taught in Math 2 or would we be better off to go with Math 1? Thanks for your input!
A shopper on Aug 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Saxon 2 does review math facts, but a solid understanding of them would be helpful, in my opinion. Personally, I would do Saxon 1 and skip the lessons (or speed through) she is already strong at.
What is included in this kit?
A shopper on Oct 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: You get the teacher's manual; fact cards for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; student worksheets and tests (in two booklets); and master pages for selected lessons. The master pages are needed to complete some of the lessons. There are also also pages for checklists and logs to keep track of the student's progress.

Reliable math program
The teacher guide is extremely helpful in providing conceptual lesson plans. The worksheets help reinforce the concepts taught in the current and previous lessons. Flashcards are included with the texts and are color-coded for different concepts. The switch to Saxon Math has been beneficial to my daughter because the pace of Saxon is not overwhelming and gives students time and repetition to master concepts before moving on to more difficult ones.

Levels…
A bit disappointed so far. Used the placement test before settling on this level, and so far everything is wayyyyy too slow and easy for my son. He was on the cusp of the next level up according to the placement exam. If your kid is on the cusp, I’d say go for the next level up. Hard to keep him engaged so far. I may just skip ahead a bit and see how that goes.

Saxon is a solid program
I have used Saxon for just about every grade. I am using it in conjunction with Life of Fred. Life of Fred is also a solid program, but I also have Saxon so I can see where they are at with it's tests and re-enforced concepts. Saxon helps with record keeping and tells me exactly where they are having an issue and provides extra practice with the 2nd page of practice for each lesson. The "open and go" is another wonderful feature to this curriculum.

Math is now her favorite subject! Worth every penny.
We were previously using a different math curriculum and it was a fight each day to get her to do it because she was bored and thought it "too babyish" as there were so many pictures and graphics that she said distracted her. My daughter is 8 years old.

Day one, after opening the curriculum, she immediately tackled several worksheets and enjoyed her work. Then throughout the day asked, "Hey can I do some more of that new math?" and proceeded to do several more of her own accord.

My husband and I are thoroughly impressed with the Saxon curriculum and plan to use it in years to come. We've had it a little over a month now and my daughter is growing in her love of math each day. We can see she is grasping the concepts quickly and retaining them! Wow. Very grateful for this well designed program.

I love the straightforward no nonsense worksheets that look "grown up". So much child-centered curriculum is littered with LOTS of pictures, graphics, bright colors, and lots of "extras" on the page. I'm sure this is intended to keep a child's attention. If your child enjoys these "extras" as it were then Saxon is not the program for you. That being said, there are plenty of opportunities for learning math, making it interesting and holding attention through variety: manipulatives, making drawings of word problems, etc.

We are thoroughly impressed! Worth every penny!

We're thankful for Saxon Math!
We really like Saxon math. It is thorough and moves at an appropriate pace. Because of It's incremental approach, I feel like my child can have better mastery over the topics. I don't do the "morning meeting" every day, but I always do the main lesson from the teacher's guide and the recommended math sheets. It's nice how I can tailor it to my child's specific needs.
