Publisher Description:

Are you looking for a gentle introduction to Latin and a course that prepares your young student for a more advanced study of the language? Prima Latina is specifically designed for students and teachers with no Latin background. This course was developed for children in 1st-4th grades who are still becoming familiar with English grammar and wish to learn Latin at a slower pace and learn English grammar in the process. Its goal is to teach and reinforce an understanding of the basic parts of speech while introducing Latin. It benefits the student by teaching him half of the vocabulary in Latina Christiana I and grounding him in the fundamental concepts of English grammar, the key to Latin study. The grammar lessons are set forth in a form appropriate for primary grades. The review lessons that follow each unit provide the consistent review needed to master Latin. With clear explanations and easy-to-read lessons in a two-color format, Prima Latina is perfect for those teachers and parents who would like to start their students on an early study of Christian Latin. Prima Latina is also the perfect preparation for Latina Christiana.

Category Description for Prima Latina (Gr. K-3):

This course is aimed towards young Latin scholars. Designed to precede Latina Christiana I, it introduces students to beginning Latin. 25 lessons cover seven parts of speech, two tenses, 125 vocabulary words, numbers 1 through 10, basic constellations, and introductions to conjugations, declensions and derivatives. The lessons are broken down into grammar skills, five vocabulary words, a practical Latin phrase, and a line of prayer that is completely learned by the end of the chapter. Also included are five review lessons, five tests, and an appendix and answer key. The CD (available in hard copy or streaming) includes an introduction, pronunciation guide, prayer instructions, the sanctus, the doxology, the table blessing, the pater noster, and pronunciation helps for the lessons. We offer the individual components separately, or in sets for convenience. The Text Set includes the student book, teacher manual, and CD. The Complete Set also includes the flashcards (designed to be used with both Prima Latina and Latina Christiana I) and DVDs.

I like that this book helps teach grammar in general as well as gently introduce Latin to the Primary Grades. Its basic, no frills, but solid and usable.

Borrowed this from a friend and feel it will be a much better match for a Latin/Grammar programme for my kids than what I am using (trying to use) now.

I love the idea of introducing Latin to my children at a young age. The root word understanding it provides is helpful throughout their future studies. This book is very easy to follow along and teach anyone from small children to adults. I also have the cd, flash cards and teacher book to supplement this.

I'm purchasing this for my second child. It is a great introduction to Latin; some of this will be repeated in Latina Christian and/or First Form Latin, but that makes for some easier days in the more advanced Latin texts... always nice to have some easier days in the middle of the school year.
Cheryl J on Dec 6, 2016
I believe it is a fantastic way to introduce young children or just first time learners to Latin. It is not intimidating and the kids like to listen to Mrs. Lowe.

We are only on lesson two, but so far we like this a lot. My girls actually beg to do Latin and celebrate when we start. I do this along with the Prima Latina video, which has been INVALUABLE for someone without a Latin background. I would strongly urge you to buy the DVD to go along with the workbook. Good review, practical daily use suggestions, and can easily incorporate into every day.

My older daughter did this book this year and I'm ready to get her younger sister started on them. A great, unintimidating intro to Latin (even for mom!) We just use the student book, rarely touch the CD

Memoria Press curriculum was our first choice beginning a classical education for our children. A good fit for each of our two eldest in their first year. Reinforces but does not assume other English grammar lessons, which I find helpful.

My 3rd grader and I have enjoyed using this Latin curriculum It is nicely laid out very clear and simple It makes sense and Latin is easy to learn with this method It is adaptable as well - I like to make the exercises and practice more fun for my son and I can do thatThe one problem I have with this particular set of Latin lessons is that the teacher uses several mispronunciations in her spoken examples Right after she reminds us that the Latin "a" is always pronounced "ah " she has us repeat "magister" with an "a" like in "hat!" Likewise "Jesus" She explains that "s" is always like the "s" in "soap" without exception and then a moment later she says "Jesus" as "YAY-zoos" "Ambulo" she says as "AHM-byoo-low" And so forth This is very unauthentic Latin pronunciation not to mention contradictory to the rules she herself lays out And her thick Southern accent has my son confused and pronouncing his Latin "o" vowels with a Southern accent! So this is something I've had to correct in every lesson as we go so that the incorrect pronunciation doesn't get into his ear

I used this text with both my 4th grader & 6th grader Neither child had any prior foreign language experience therefore I chose it for its simplicity My boys loved it & looked forward to Latin time The biggest bonus was the reinforcement & explanation of English grammar while showing how Latin compares to it I definitely appreciated the Pronunciation CD I would also use the Teacher guide It contains tests & tips that I used Instead of buying premade flashcards they made their own Doing so enabled memory copying & dictation skills

This course uses a lot of Christian material but as a non-Christian I think it is still the best Latin course for anyone teaching younger children All other books I looked at 'drowned' the child in the first lesson I have been using this book with my 8 year old for 2 months and we love it It is wonderfully straightforward and we really like the fact that it proceeds in such small manageable chunksWe work through the new bits together and then my daughter does the written bits over 2 daysWe also play charades to learn new words which is very popularI really wish I could find other language programmes written in the same way
