Product Description:

Once students have learned all about the creatures of the air and the basics of zoology, they can take a trip into the depths and discover all the strange and unique creatures of the sea, lakes, and rivers. They'll learn about the special features of swimming creatures, the different watery environments they live in, what their lifestyles are like, and the special circumstances they deal with. Then they take a closer look at specific groups of swimming creatures, including whales, seals, sea cows, sea turtles, sea snakes, sea frogs and toads, primeval reptiles (like plesiosaurs), fish, sharks, rays, crustaceans, cephalopods, echinoderms, cnidarians, sponges, leeches, and more. As they study these creatures, they'll create replicas of them to add to an ongoing "Ocean Box," and conduct neat experiments like discovering the insulating power of fat, investigating how electrical current travels through salt water vs. fresh water, and determining how much of a role temperature plays in tadpole development. They'll also add to their notebooks by drawing the animals in them, comparing and contrasting animals, and much more. Whether the ocean is a familiar place to your children or not, they'll be equally fascinated by learning about the unique creatures beneath the water.

Publisher Description:

From the rivers and streams to the mighty ocean, God filled the Earth's waters with animals great and small. Upon His word, enormous whales sprung into being. At His command, billions of plankton leapt to life. On that day, millions of creatures like the strapping sea turtles, the skulking sharks, the delightful dolphins, and the soaring squid gladly joined their fellow sea animals. Strong swimming bass traveled the rivers past the creeping crayfish and the sluggardly snails. How joyously crammed with excitement was the fifth day of Earth's existence!

Apologia's second zoology book will take you and your family on an exploration into the wonders of the swimming creatures made on the fifth day of creation. You'll begin with a big splash from the whales and dolphins, then spy on seals and meet manatees before swimming with the sea turtles, snakes, and salamanders. You'll even peek in on the primeval plesiosaurus and its pals.

Following your frolic with fish and sharks, you'll uncover the world of crabby crustaceans, sea snails, clams, and their soft bodied friends like the octopus, squid, and nautilus. You'll consort with corals, find flowers that devour plankton, see stars and feathers that walk, leap and roll, and discover dollars that disappear in the sand and sponges that clean more than you might think.

From the microscopic to massive, no stone is left unturned in your student's passage through the waters of the world. The creatures your student studies will come to life as your student creates replicas of them and adds them to his "Ocean Box - a miniature hand-crafted aquarium. As always, each lesson ends with an experiment or project reinforcing the scientific method and the concepts studied. Among other experiments and projects, your student will try on blubber, investigate a shark's ability to sense electrical currents, explore how whales can hear sounds that come from far away, and learn through experimentation which creatures make the best fossils. No matter how near or far you live from the ocean, you and your students will wonder at God's designs in the amazing aquatic animals He formed on the fifth day.

Category Description for Apologia Science (K-6):

This popular elementary science series was originally created when Jeannie Fulbright, author and homeschool mom, was looking for a quality elementary science series that was creation-based using the Charlotte Mason approach. When she didn't find the curriculum she was looking for she decided to create her own. These books use the classical and Charlotte Mason methodology including narration and notebooking to develop critical thinking, logical ordering, retention, and record keeping. The series has since expanded to cover more science topics. New for 2021 is Earth Science, authored by Rachel Yunis, author of Exploring Creation with Advanced Biology.

Since the Charlotte Mason method is employed, every lesson is organized with a narrative, notebook work, an activity, and a project. The student notebook is emphasized in the lessons. Activities and projects bring the lessons to life and use simple household items. While the author's intent is for the parent to read these books to elementary students, a student with a 4th-grade reading level could read these books on their own. The books come from a strong creationist viewpoint, including sections called "Creation Confirmation" and Scripture interwoven throughout the book. Apologia recommends spending an entire year covering each book, taking about two weeks to explore most lessons (some lessons may require more time).

Notebooking Journals were a later - and welcome - addition to the series. As they complete the courses, students were encouraged to compile a notebook to collect and display the information they are learning. The Apologia Notebooking Journals now provide a place for the student to complete every assignment, to record experiments and to display work. Included are weekly lesson plans, templates for recording fascinating facts and assignments, and scripture copywork in both print and cursive models. In addition to full-color Miniature Books (for recording facts and information and pasting directly into the notebook), there are optional ideas (Take it Further in Astronomy; Dig in Deeper in Botany; Fly Higher in Zoology, etc.) for lots of additional activities, projects, experiments, books or videos, all of which correlate with specific lessons in each course. Along these lines, the Personal Person project in both of the Anatomy notebooks is special providing clear vinyl overlays of each body system. Be prepared to cut these out, though.

Junior Notebooking Journals are a simplified version of the orignal Notebooking Journals and require less handwriting but have the same reinforcing activities. These books include coloring pages, project pages, and cut and fold miniature books (same ones as in the version for older students). There is space for notebooking assignments (more drawings, no questions to answer) and scripture copywork (shorter verses to copy either in manuscript or in beginning cursive). Biblical quotations are from the NASB, KJV, NIV or NKJV.

To complete the books all you will need to provide is scissors, glue, colored pencils, a stapler, and a few brass fasteners. There are plenty of activity options in the journals, but keep in mind that based on your student, you may not want to complete every activity. Work can be tailored to each student by simply tearing out unwanted pages from the spiral-bound book. Serving both as a uniquely expressed record of the student's work and as a prized reminder of acquired knowledge, these books will become a homeschooling heirloom.

For convenience, we now offer either Advantage Sets or SuperSets. Advantage Sets include the textbook and either the Junior or original Notebooking Journal. SuperSets include the text, the MP3 Audiobook CD and either the Junior or the original Notebooking Journal.

We also offer lab kits from Nature's Workshop for the elementary courses. Kits contain most of the materials for the experiments, and are conveniently packaged by lesson in the corresponding book (sold separately). There are still a few items you will need from around your house, but with these kits the list becomes extremely short. ~ Janice / Jerry

Category Description for Apologia Science:

Apologia Science courses are written from a Biblical worldview with the homeschool in mind. At the elementary level, courses follow a Charlotte Mason-inspired methodology, with lessons organized around narration, notebooking exercises and hands-on activities or projects. Children at different ages can use these together, learning at their own level. Each course is designed to be teacher-student interactive, so teacher involvement is fairly high at this level. At the junior high and high school levels, science courses are more traditional in nature, with the textbook written to the student. Teacher involvement time at this level is much less than at the elementary level. Textbooks contain student reading, lab instructions, "On Your Own" questions and Study Guide questions. A Solutions Manual provides the answers to these and the test questions. Lab kits are available separately for both the elementary and upper-level science courses which include most of the harder to find items you will need.

Our nine year old loves sea creatures. I can't wait to see what he thinks of this. I love how this curriculum reminds children of God's hand in creation.
Kimberly D on Aug 16, 2018
You simply can NOT get a better quality science curriculum if you are desirous of a biblical and truthful account of creation. This will show your student god's intentional hand in creation in a facts based format. You will also be able to see god's love and care for his highest creations humans and how he designed all creatures and humans for interaction. Can't say enough good things about these books. They are lofty for the suggested grades so I wait a while longer before diving in.

My 7th-grader is VERY interested in marine biology. Though this is meant for grade-schoolers, I think it will be enjoyable AND she will learn from it. Maybe I can get her to do ALL of the work, instead of saying it's so hard, I can't do it, I don't care about it etc., etc.. I hope to have my daughter work on this over the summer.

do you NEED the lab kit?
Laurel on Mar 16, 2021
BEST ANSWER: No, but it is very convenient. We didn’t purchase one our first year, so I was sometimes scrambling to find supplies needed for projects/experiments. It’s mostly common items needed, but occasionally, there were items I couldn’t find. This year we purchased the lab kit, & it has made life easier to just open up the corresponding lesson package & have everything I need. It really comes down to whether or not you want to pay for the convenience.
Do you have to do the first zoology book before you do this one?
A shopper on Feb 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No not at all. This is actually my first year homeschooling my 6th grader and we actually get together once a week with two other families to teach each lesson. There is a mix of ages of the kids from 6 years to 12. This book is very thorough and easy to understand.

Fantastic Resource
This is our second year with Apologia Science and we all couldn't be more thrilled. The text is written interestingly, the activity ideas build upon the text, pictures are lovely, questions for narration helpful and the kids really enjoy making the ocean box. The links the author provides online are wonderful and are one of our favorite aspects of the program! It really makes the animals "come alive" with the video links; no more searching youtube. The Junior notebook is great to use with it too. I like that this is multi-aged and am using it with a 1st grader and 3rd grader but it could easily go up or down a couple of years both ways and be enjoyable. Children seem to retain the information as well, the author doesn't try to cover too much at once. Thanks to this text, we have raised tadpoles and triops and that has been a great delight too ;)

Love this approach
This is my second year using "exploring creation" books for home school science. I love the fact that my children really get to know a subject! This approach challenges and equips students to be in depth instead of glossing over material. The Creation Confirmation sections are fantastic examples of how real science can be used to support the Bible. I highly recommend the use of the Junior Notebooking journal alongside the text book unless you are majorly organized and crafty. It had made teaching much easier for me.

Great Textbook
My son has really enjoyed this science text book. He has always had a great interest in all things oceans and lakes related. He reads the lessons and retains the information he is learning. That is a win for me. The book has great photos and illustrations. It is well written with an easy to understand content while still challenging the reader with new vocabulary.
