Category Description for World Geography (Paradigm Accelerated):

World Geography probably isn't the favorite subject of most, but this course from Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum could change your mind. A one year high school course that covers six basic regions of the world - North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, and presents information about their borders, terrain, water, climate, vegetation and wildlife, famous sites and events, ethnicities, languages, religions, transportation, government, diplomacy, economics, natural resources, and industry & exports.

I know it sounds like a lot of information packed into the frame of one year, and it is, but it is presented in such an interesting way that I think you'll enjoy it. For example, when learning about the wildlife and vegetation of North America, students will be introduced to the story of Chris McCandless about whom the book Into the Wild was written. A brief summary of this man's life is used as an introduction to the Giant Kodiak bear, coniferous trees, and the other plants and animals that inhabit the northern areas of North America. Although there are no colored pictures in this curriculum, the reading is interesting and attempts to make a personal connection with the reader.

Each chapter/text presents one of the continents in the order listed above. Texts are divided into 3 sections; each section is divided into 5 lessons. Maps and charts for each region are included in the text along with black and white pictures to enhance the information. Lessons begin with a list of new vocabulary, textual information follows, and a 'life principle' or quote from a famous figure is found at the end of the section.

The Activities Workbooks are aligned to the information found in the text and include fill-in-the-blank, true/false, multiple choice, mapping, and short answer.

All answer keys, quizzes, and tests are found in the Teacher Resource Kit, #12148. It includes this information as blackline masters and as a digital download. (You can also purchase the Teacher's Resource Kit on CD-ROM.) The Course Kit contains the Text Books, Activities Books, and the Teacher Resource Kit with both the blackline masters and a digital download.

This course is interesting and full of facts I'm not sure I ever learned and is a good alternative to more traditional geography courses.

Unfortunately we had to ditch this curriculum before even completing the first chapter There were simply too many factual errors (see some examples below) I felt that I spent as much time fact checking as I did teaching Luckily I personally taught this curriculum to my freshman daughter so I was able to catch most of the errors (at least the ones I was aware of) If she had taught herself she would have been misinformed on several occasions I decided to discontinue the curriculum this evening while teaching my daughter lesson 9 from chapter one My husband who was painting in the kitchen kept interjecting "That's not correct!" several times throughout the lesson Finally he came in and urged me to find another curriculum for her I am glad that we both have a strong grasp of history and geography or we may not have caught some of the errors Now to find another good World Geography curriculum sigh Examples of errors are emphasized in Capitals(all from chapter 1 up to the first part of lesson 9 -- that's as far as we got):p 6"WEST of the [Northwest] Territory lies Nunavut " (Should be east)p 24" pythons and walking catfish have increased in Florida Louisiana and Texas coastal regions -- apparently the result of pet owners who released the AMPHIBIANS when they grew too big for captivity" (Uh pythons are reptiles and walking catfish are amphibious fish not amphibians)p26" the Statue of Liberty on ELLIS Island " (Should read "Liberty Island" Although Ellis Island was made part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in 1965 and the islands are close to each other Ellis Island is not the island on which the statue of Liberty is located That honor goes to Liberty IslandP 32"In SOUTH DAKOTA conflicts like The Battle of Little Bighorn " (The Battle of Little Bighorn was in Montana)p 40"In 1514 the Dutch Reformed community of New Netherland was among the first protestant settlements in the Americas" (I believe this should read 1614 since the protestant reformation had not yet occurred in 1514 and the Dutch Reformed Church did not exist at that time)There were other errors in the text and in the student activities as well (yes birch trees do live in Alaska) but I will stop with the above examplesI realize I am being nit-picky on some of these examples but I have high expectations for high school level curriculum If it was one or two mistakes I could understand but the further I go the more I find -- and that concerns me I worry that when we get to less familiar material I won't be able to identify any inaccuracies
