Category Description for Beethoven's Wig: Sing Along Symphonies:

Wow - talk about fun and energizing music! I have never been a real big classical music fan, but after listening to these CD's, I'm hooked! These symphonies are done with outrageously funny lyrics set to great classical music! They are filled with fact and fancy about the world's most notable composers and their masterpieces. Sing along with 'Beethoven's Wig' to his 5th Symphony, 'Tchaikovsky's Cannonball' to his 1812 Overture, 'Stuck in the Saddle Again' to Suppe's Light Cavalry Overture, and more. There are 11 symphonies per CD . Also included are the lyrics so you can sing along, and there are 2 questions at the bottom of each page with answers in the back. There are also suggested activities for each symphony. Once you have sung along, there is also an Orchestral Performance of each symphony without the lyrics. These CD's have won several awards including Parent's Choice Award and the NAPPA Gold Award. ~ Phyllis

I was dubious about introducing these CDs thinking they'd just be novelty tunes and to some extent they are Certainly they're just a small "background" part of our music curriculum But it is amazing how much of a "theme" (the core section of a piece of music) you can pick up with a simple silly songAs another reviewer comments the "can-can" song uses the word "derriere" I wish they'd chosen another but for us it's not the end of the world Also I really wish every song mentioned at least the name of the composer A few on each album don't although most do Favorites from this second CD include the brilliant "Hall of the Mountain King" and "Sing Verdi Very Loud" Schubert's "Trout Quintet" very cleverly becomes a memorable "fish story" to go with the title and often there are other details woven into the themeThese CDs will never be the entirety of any child's classical music education but as a way to show that classical music can be lighthearted and to introduce a few well-known tunes it's a lot of fun My daughter 5 walks around humming Beethoven and Vivaldi and the other day came out of her ballet class and announced that they'd played Schubert Pretty impressive!
