Category Description for Winged Watchman:

Ten year-old Joris can hardly remember what life was like before the Germans took over Holland. Now there are air raids, neighbors that have become German informants, and rations for everything. However, his family still makes do as they run a mill called the Watchman. After he witnesses a plane being shot down, Joris gets his chance to help an RAF pilot, and the whole family gets involved in the resistance movement. A realistic, yet warm WWII story with a close-knit, caring family.

Required reading for 5th grade literature class; there is another book by the same author that looked fascinating (I believe the title is The Borrowed Room) and we plan to check that one out from our local library. We need this one sooner rather than later (or we would have requested that the library purchase).

Wonderful
I read this aloud to my 8 and 6 year old boys. We loved it and I think this is my favorite story I have read them aloud so far. So many nuggets of truth and lessons to be talked about in this book along with a wonderful story.

This is one of my favorite historical fiction books yet! My 13 yr old son and 7 yr old daughter loved it also We all refer to it often Hilda Von Stockum is a wonderful author and we have enjoyed all her writings in our homeschool but this one holds a special place in our hearts A great supplement to your study of World War 2 that will cause this period of history to come alive for you and your children I loved learning more about Dutch life also What a quaint and fascinating culture they had You can also use this book to vault into a study of Dutch geography as it goes into the lay of the land and much more! The more I think about it this book would make a great core for a unit study! However you decide to use this book in your homeschool it will be an eye-opening and attention-getting look at this time and place in history!
